WR/RB Thread

I have no doubt that White's injury is real, but I still have the opinion that it qualifies as an IR stash and here's why. The recovery time from the surgery will almost certainly be more than the length of the preseason. While Harbaugh has seen enough that he is not ready to let him go, he hasn't seen enough to be certain that he'll make the 53. With the decision on the final roster likely coming before White is recovered, and while Harbaugh is not ready to simply give him an injury settlement and send him on his way, he's simply placed him on IR. In my opinion, and if that's correct, that's a stash.

Thinking that White is being stashed on IR is one of the more insane things I think I've seen from this fanbase. He can't be put on IR until the end of the preseason without being exposed to waivers, he hasn't been practicing, he was the starting punter returner for the preseason game and was working with the first team offense. Considering how much bad returning hurt the team last year with Hester, I don't think the team would risk being out of options at the position again with the only other punt returners being Camp (health issues) and Reynolds (muff issues) if there wasn't an actual problem with White.

Exactly. It was only one game and he didn't really do much with his returns (wasn't given much of a chance), but he demonstrated good hands and ball security which is what you want in your returner above all else. If there was any chance that White could come back in a decent amount of time then he wouldn't be put on IR. Also, this is just based on his special teams play alone; he obviously could have contributed on offense as well.

Yea its always possible they get close to the deadline for using the return and no other candidate has popped up and hes the only guy on IR thats healthy enough to return and they decide to use it on him.

My thinking though is thats probably the only way they would use it on him, being an UDFA that, while he was standing out, wasnt standing out to the point that he was a lock to even make the roster let alone be a contributor in any real way.

Regardless, to the original posts, none of that gives the team any incentive to "stash" him now as opposed to waiting to let him get the most reps possible before roster cut downs and the season starts. So, imo, the whole idea of this finger injury just being an excuse to stash away a kid we like doesnt seem plausible.

I know thats not what you were arguing for.... just going back to the original point.
Yeah I agree given that perriman is out, camp is injury prone and we won't want Wallace and maclin to play many snaps we are a little short of wrs to take snaps during preseason so there would be no point i/r ing him until final cut down day

Also I forgot about this earlier but in order to be eligible to "return" don't you have to start on the 53 at the cutdown deadline? Isn't that why we did all the palaver with forsett?

After watching West and Allen I'm confident in the running game. We could go get a Nick Chubb in the draft next year to be our next workhorse. You don't need a stud RB to win a super bowl

My real concern with Matthews is that he can't stay healthy. Otherwise he's probably an upgrade as a RB.

I think west is due for a huge season, and woodhead is right in line with what we look for in a 2nd rb.

No need for Matthews at all. More cap allocated to the trainers table is a step in the wrong direction

I agree it would have made much more sense to keep him on the preseason for the next few games, but I do believe he was actually injured. I think his injury might take 1-2 months to recover from. I think he would have been stuck on the sideline for the pre season and the coaches could add an extra roster spot with this move.

To me it just doesn't make any sense, he did a post game interview and seemed completely fine and the injury was not mentioned. Then it was announced a thumb injury would keep him out FIVE PLUS months?? A thumb injury let me repeat. There was no coverage on this, just ALEX LEWIS HURT, oh yea Tim White is done also. I agree the injury wasnt made up, but I do think he will be out for atleast 6 weeks.

I'm still praying we get saquon Barkley.

I still have no idea why people say Tim White's return skills sucked last week. I mean he didn't make a huge play like Keenan Reynolds but he has displayed great hands throughout practices as well as still getting 9-10 yards a return whatever it was last week. Those aren't game changing numbers but Reynolds has a fumbling issue. Also White's versatility with the first team offense showed. Hopefully the team is healthy enough they can use the IR DTR tag on him but I bet the team loses someone possibly more valuable to use it on with how lucky the team is already (not).

He showed solid return skills and pretty good skills as a receiver. I mean it was against 2nd string players at the time of his touchdown but he still got a run and catch in with the first team.

My bet is that they use the IR dtr on Canady

I could be wrong here but didn't the NFL change the rule this year where you don't have to label someone with that tag but can instead activate two of your IR guys? I could've sworn that was a thing.

Edit: I just went to look and I can't find that. Perhaps that was a rumor or something. I know they approved not requiring a cut down to 75 and they approved two guys to return from IR

I was under this impression as well.
