Eric DeCosta Thread

So far Eric DeCosta has been making all the right moves. Thoughts?

The hiring of Greg Roman
Moving Engram to TEs Coach and hiring a new WR coach
(I understand many believe these moves were Harbaugh related)

Tavon Young -- extension
Michael Crabtree -- cut
Eric Weddle -- cut
CJ Mosley -- deciding not to franchise him

i think its hard to say that we've done anything overtly differently so far - i think many of the things that have changed will be far more apparent in the next month and a half of the offseason - free agency and then the draft will be big indicators of what's gone on

getting tavon done early was a really nice move though
those other 3 moves were pretty obvious tbh (a lot of this impression hinges on us actually re-signing CJ)

but i do get the sense that there are some pretty significant philosophy changes on certain things like using statistical analysis and analytics more, valuing certain positions and traits more etc.

although we have only written one contract since, another difference was not backloading the contract.

I mean this was the first year in about 8 they didn't have to backload it because of bad previous signings.

I reserve judgment until I see Mosley ink a deal because all the brain power in a complex D could spell disaster.

I'd like to see it even throughout, but i don't have an issue with it being less in the first year and the remaining 3 or 4 pretty even either.

absolutely ridiculous.....he's not on a short leash and shouldn't be either.
Yes he should be. We have four years to develop Lamar and if we don’t give him a good defense and supporting cast he needs to go. That’s not debatable. That’s a short leash and he needs to be on it

it absolutely isn't debatable. he is the right man for the job and putting someone on a short leash right after they are hired is absolutely absurd.

You basically saying you are hired, but you're on the hot seat. Shear stupidity

I’m liking it so far. The draft will make or break it for me. I could care less about resigning Mosley. If he stays and is not overpaid that’s fine, but I think his accolades in such a short time pushes his value sky high. He’s resetting the market for ILB and I don’t think the Ravens need to or should invest that much money in him.

This would be true.... If he was truly a new hire.

He's not. And have you really liked the philosophy the team has "adopted" since the super bowl, where supposedly he got more and more say. It's insane if you do. The team has been stuck in the Stone Age. Not in regards to analytics. Giving Brandon Williams that insane contract. Drafting bums like Elam. Not investing high level capital in the trenches THAT ARE WORTH IT. Not taking the pass rush or the center position seriously. Not investing in the offensive positions.

How much of it is his fault? Not to say, but to say he's "perfect for the job" is an unknown.

So yes. Give him a short leash. He has the chance to build his own team. He has a franchise QB with loads of promise. If in four years we do not give Lamar an adaquate supporting cast and a defense, the tools to grow... That'll be enough of a sample size to know that he sucks.

I'm being realistic. We don't know what we have and are about to do the clean slate. What we've seen is actually less than promising from the front office since 2012. Two playoff appearances in 6 years. Not a good hit rate.

I'm skeptical. I hope he's good, but based off of how our philosophy has likely molded him, I've had my doubts.

if he's on a short leash from the moment he's hired then what's the point in promoting him in the first place? he shouldnt be asked to do his job out of fear from the outset

Short leash isn't the right word, but we need to stop pretending that we have an absolute slam dunk when the track record we do have of him shouldn't inspire as much confidence as we do have. If we turns out to be Ozzie 2.0, that's great. But we cannot give him as much leeway as a typical new hire.

If in four years we haven't made any progress, he needs to go. You're not going to change my mind

and he has to be given a chance to succeed as well. GM's are allowed to make mistakes. You don't need to jump down his throat everytime he does. If he is half as good as Ozzie hes an awesome.

and to your point......Absolutely NO ONE is a slam dunk.

I mean if the team sucks in 4 years then I would expect any team (maybe not the Steelers or Bengals but they are weird) to want to rebuild the organization from the top down. 4 years is not even a short leash, its an eternity by NFL standards. It would take multiple awful drafts in a row to lower the quality of the team from what is honestly a pretty high point right now and multiple bad decisions on the level of not signing Mosley (damn it get that deal done).

Giving Eric 4 years is a LOT of rope and more than most GMs would get in a similar situation.

So far, Eric has done nothing so overtly surprising to me as of yet. I already anticipated and expected that both Crabtree and Weddle would be out. Collins? I knew he was gone already due to the congestion at the RB position but then his recent incident cemented his fate. I'm watching and waiting to see what happens with C.J. before crowning Eric as some kind of GM-Guru. Way too early for that!
