Montgomery got the vet minimum per Manish Mehta, so no changes to our comp picks unfortunately.

IIRC we wanted to sign Brandon Marshall, but DeCosta told him they can only sign him after the draft because of the comp pick rule. Zach Brown is still a FA I think we may have an agreement with him.

What do you guys think about getting rid of Montgomery?

Brown was cut so he wouldn't factor anyways. If we had an agreement, he'd already be here.

ok thanks for clearing things up. I just don't see much in this years draft class.

Agreed. There are a couple of guys I might consider taking a chance on super late in the draft, but the ILB class isn't that good and the FAs available aren't much better. I'd just roll with Young and Peanut and hope it works out this year. Add a little bit of depth and that's really all I'd do at this point unless something shakes loose in the coming months.

For what it's worth, I know Brown consistently grades high in the PFF rankings but he's always struggled to maintain any grip on a position in the NFL, so clearly teams see/know something that PFF doesn't.

I was disappointed in his time here, thought he would be a nice third down back but he essentially did jack shit

Another player that was horribly misused by the coaching staff. He made a few plays for us, but he should have been a lot more involved in the offense than he was. Not sure why we picked him up to barely use him when we could have just gotten similar production from Buck Allen.

For what it's worth, it was reported several weeks after his arrival that Montgomery was having trouble picking up the offense. Just one of those deals that didn't work out.

I didn’t understand Marty’s approach with him at all. The Buck Allen comparison is spot on, although I think he was a much more consistent pass blocker which got him the nod over Allen.

If I saw one more play with Montgomery trying to get around the edge I was going to lose my mind. He was slower than I anticipated but that jumped off the tape early...you’d think they’d adjust and have him sneaking out into the flat more often as a dump off option for Jackson when he was rolling out.

Water under the bridge.

Speaking of Allen, I’m sad to see what’s become of him. It looked like he might finally find a role in the offense early in the season but he just disappeared. Certainly not a doghouse issue, just not quite good enough at any particular facet to warrant being active. Tough to see because the guy has obviously worked his tail off since coming into the league.

I still feel like that should be blamed on the coaching staff though because they could have just simplified things for him in order to get him more involved. It's not like our offense had a ton of different passing plays with Lamar at the helm.

I'd love to have Zach Brown as a Raven. That would make so much sense and would be a great signing. Brown was also cut, so he can be signed anytime. That being said they probably want to wait until after the draft just incase one of the top LBs fall into our lap. Not likely, but just in case.

According to Overthecap running comp cancellation chart, we have gained back the John Brown 4th round pick due to Ty Montgomery signing. Of course this will all depend on whether Ty Montgomery's salary is within the 7th round threshold. However, as it stands now, we have a 3rd (ZDS) and a 4th round comp (John Brown)

Here is the cancellation chart:

https://overthecap.com/compensatory-draft-picks-cancellation-chart/

Now if Urban, Allen or Maxx can sign someplace we could get another pick back, but this probably won't happen until after the draft, if at all.

UPDATE: Although Overthecap lists Ty Montgomery's salary as TBA, Spotrac has the average salary as 895k, which will surely be non qualified, so at this point we probably only have ZDS's 3rd round comp pick.

I believe the major factor is how many FAs you lose and then the pay package comes in. We at 5 now but 4 of them were at annual salaries of 7 mil or more. I strongly feel we getting a 3rd and 4th just cuz of the 5 we lost and the 3 we gained. It makes no sense that Bethel at 2 mil a year cancels out a 9 mil annual contract.

Just cuz Montgomery is a vet minimum he still counts numberswise to the amount of gains and losses.

The last part is incorrect. It’s not the sheer number of free agents you sign vs. how many you lose - it’s the number of qualifying free agents. Players under a vet minimum deal are not qualifying free agents in the comp pick formula.

They also have to be included in the top 32 comp picks

We all love Buck, but he was nothing more than a solid special teamer. They used him as a GL/power back because we had no alternatives until Gus emerged. Allen lacked explosivness, suddenness, power and speed. Technically in my eyes he wasn't even suited as GL back. I mean even as a pure receiving back he was below average.
