2021 General Draft Thoughts

interesting to see it laid out like this - suggestion being that OTs are not prevalent after Round 1 - would indicate that despite the depth in the class this year, if a guy looks like he might be a starter then he's probably going to get drafted in R1 - which means we could see an absolute ton of tackles going in the 1st round this year - last year we had 6 go - it could be even more this year especially at the back-end of the 1st

Not gonna lie lol, getting brown in 3rd had me thinking we could possibly pull something off like that again.

haha nope that's exceedingly rare - now if you're picking a OT to play inside that's a different matter entirely but getting orlando brown was a massive unicorn moment - even the other 2 tackles he listed outside of round 1 were both taken in the 2nd round - to get orlando where we did was a coup

and if a guy looks like he'll be a good starter in the NFL then it's likely he's getting picked in round 1 - the ravens have been unmatched in their ability to find decent starters at tackle later in the draft... ricky wagner (5th round) and orlando brown (3rd round) most recently

but even so kelechi osemele we drafted to be a tackle as a 2nd rounder and he had to move inside to guard to hit his potential, james hurst did incredibly well given his udfa status (but also played his best at guard)

if there is going to be a class where we do get someone it would be this one given the stacked class (2020 was also pretty nicely stacked with OT talent and it looks like a couple of guys outside round 1 from that class have a chance to become good pros - chiefs really like lucas niang who opted out last year, ezra cleveland might be starting LT for the vikings in 2021 and weirdly Michael Onwenu has actually converted from guard to tackle and did exceptionally well for new england last year)

but this 2021 class is absolutely loaded with talent - the question will be whether that talent translates - previous form suggests most of it won't but it would be very surprising if at least a couple didn't pan out at tackle (it's possible that some of them will be moving inside - jackson carman, jalen mayfield, brenden jaimes, kayode awosika, alex leatherwood, robert hainsey, royce newman could all potentially be moved inside) but the idea that none of the 11 guys i have graded on day 2 would succeed as tackles is beyond the pale... but form says that's likely to happen

it's definitely wild that we managed to get the best OT in the draft class in 2018 in the middle of the 3rd round

Number one fun player to watch is Chris Rumph, EDGE, Duke.

really late on this one - but i read that he turned up at his pro day at 244lbs (probably played at 225) - unfortunately didnt test because of a hammy but if he can be as explosive as he is on tape at 244 he could be a major steal on draft day - it's certainly possible given that he seemed to be thin in his lower half rather than in his upper body

really fun to watch in college but at 225 and getting bullied by tackles when they get hands on made me wonder what position he'd even play in the NFL - if he can play at 244 I'd have major hopes that he could turn into a super-athletic 3-4 OLB - albeit that's a bit of a projection because of the lack of coverage snaps

looks like a designated rusher type early - not going to play any snaps vs the run at all based on the tape lol

got to think this means that the panthers know they're out of the QB race in round 1 or that they don't think a guy they like will be there for them

i wonder if maybe they tried to get up to the 4th pick but their division rivals weren't doing it?

I like the pickup for Carolina, but definitely adds some intrigue to how the draft might go at this point.

Not that I ever believed it, but you'd have to think this move rules out Mac Jones to SF. Because if Lance and/or Fields had still been options, you'd have to think Carolina would have kept working to move up to get one of them. Both of them would be great fits in that offense, so you'd have to think SF is going one of those two directions confirmed now.

yeah there's no way carolina would have been trading these picks for darnold when they might have had a shot at fields/lance - especially as it sounds like there was no rush to get darnold - from all reports it sounds like the panthers were the only team in on darnold

i guess the question now will be who gets QB 4

the falcons are a wildcard - i dont see them necessarily going QB but there is a new regime in town and they may want to bring in their guy of the future - but it's not a bad roster right now and if they're trying to win right now then i have no idea what direction they go in
if the bengals are thinking skill position then they might be a prime trade down spot but if they're going OL then they're gonna have to take their guy at 5
the dolphins clearly came back up to 6 to get a receiver - probably chase but i guess it could be either of the bama guys given the tua connection

it's a really unpredictable draft because of the falcons at 4 - if they want a QB they can get the 4th guy (and might end up with the guy they wanted the whole time) but im not convinced that they wont stick with ryan

which would make the prime candidates the Lions (would be frustrating for jared goff but i doubt they really care that much), broncos (who's roster looks pretty loaded minus a QB at this point and I'm surprised they didn't out-bid the 49ers to get to 3 because I think they're a QB and a tackle away from being an incredibly talented roster) and you've got the pats at 15 but you've got to think that if a guy gets in range of the pats that the bears will also be involved

but im pretty shocked the panthers arent in on that 4th QB (whoever they turn out to be)

Atlanta is definitely the wild card. They have so many needs that you could really justify them going in almost any direction. I wouldn't be surprised if they pick a QB, a non-QB, or trade back when the time comes. Just really hard to fathom that Carolina makes this move now if they don't have some information about how these QBs are going to go off the board. That, or they don't like Fields and/or Lance.

i mean it's definitely possible that they could like a 23 yr old darnold more - especially coming from a trainwreck of an offence to joe brady's offence with all those weapons - i could definitely see that thought process but you absolutely have to pencil in a tackle for them at 8

you've got Darnold throwing to DJ Moore, Robby Anderson, Christian McCaffrey with a defence you spent most of your draft capital on last year - there's some weapons there - but they've got to hope that Sewell or Slater fall to them - I love Darrisaw too but apparently many in the media and maybe some in the NFL don't love him as much

Here's my realistic mock draft

loved this response

definitely worth point out that mac jones was never mocked as high until the 49ers got the 3rd pick lol and all of a sudden he's for some reason a top 3 pick type QB despite no one even considering him that way beforehand...

rumors are also circulating that the 49er front office wants to take Lance, but Kyle wants Jones. Remember, I said I think Kyle wants Jones, not that he SHOULD take Jones.

My conspiracy brain tells me this is all smoke for Justin fields. They just don’t want Jets to know they’re in love with Fields and give Joe Douglas any funny ideas.

but maybe that’s just me liking fields over wilson

i think there's a ton of depth in this edge class - i dont think it's particularly strong at the top but there's a lot of guys
By top do you mean early or first round in general because I really like some of these guys who could be drafted around us. Oweh is an absolute freak of nature.

everyone is set on wr and line for obvious reasons but I am just so convinced we will take a rusher / olb. We only have bowser on the roster. Ferguson too but hes a complete jag imo. I assume we will sign someone later on in free agency but that doesn't fix the problem. We have no one who can get to the qb from the edge right now. I know the scheme is designed off blitzs and tricks but that doesnt mean you can just have 4th round picks as your rushers. Scary to me.
