Signings, Cuts, Trades

We have 1145 yds rushing. Lamar has 380. That seems like quite a reasonable balance.

If most of those Rb yards were coming from one primary back, they'd be well on the way to a 1000 yd season and we wouldn't be worried.
I mean OK, but that's meaningless without context.
95 yards a game for RBs seems good, until you consider the quantity of times they're running the ball. And the fact that many of our games lead to more rushing in the second half to grind out a lead.

I'm content with the fact that we didn't make the deals we did, due to the "alleged" price tags for some of these guys. But there's a reason we were so publicly in the RB market, and its not because we think Edwards and Hill are special.

Yet they refused to trade Jacobs or Adams, then do this. What a terribly run franchise, Mark Davis is the next owner that needs to be forced to sell the team.
Yea still scratching my head on the Jacobs situation if the reports are true. IMO the Raiders are a QB away from being a playoff team, so no reason to blow it up, but Jacobs seems like a no brainer to move on from.

Of course the reports maybe inaccurate. EDC could have low balled them and they said the heck with it we’ll take the comp pick in 25 when Jacobs walks rather than a 5th or 6th next year EDC was offering.

they wanted a 2nd

So I will say this... I don't think the public should close the door on these guys being signed long term either. If you look at the list of RBs who are all scheduled to be FAs after this year, its a HUGE list. I seriously doubt they all will be.

What I think clearly happened this past offseason is that teams drew a line in the sand on some of these player demands for RB contracts and successfully pushed the market into the range the teams wanted. And I think there's plenty of scenarios where a lot of these RBs, like Henry, Jacobs, Ekeler, Barkley, etc. dip their feet in FA and realize that the asking price they had last year still isn't close to what anybody will give them. And then they end up signing extensions with those teams at team-desired rates.

I don't think we should look at this as the Jacobs, Henry's, Barkley's, Ekeler's of the world are for certain playing elsewhere next year. Some of them might, but I doubt all. So if you're the Raiders, you did what the Colts did. You set your trade price, if nobody meets it, you keep him. And then convince him to sign an extension later.

The other obvious factor is while I personally don't advocate for signing RBs to these large extensions, they're not really "that large" in the grand scheme of things. Like Jonathan Taylor's contract, which looked very good in AAV, is effectively a 2 year, $20.2M deal. It's not a large commitment in terms of $, gtd $, or years. He's got two more years @ $26M total after that, and none of it is guaranteed and can easily never be paid out.

Etienne is not good. He is doing the exact same thing Harris did where he is getting a ton of touches so his yardage looks good.

Also its weird how you are basing your entire theory of WRs on a very specific metric. Normally I do not mind having key metrics to judge positions but you sort of picked a bad one. Boldin was a bad WR by this metric. He obviously was not but using this metric he is. I could name several others but I figure Boldin is the one people are most familiar with.

Now WRs are not as simple for me to look at for stats. For example, for pass rushers I tend to look at push rush win rate as while sacks require you to win your matchup and then something else to happen (a QB not seeing the pressure or the coverage being good), pass rush win rate requires only that a pass rusher win his matchup so its a very clean statistic to use.

Now for WR I do not have a "golden" statistic. I do have a priority list though. First on that list is catch % as catching the ball is literally your job as WR. If you are above 70% you are likely an elite WR, or having an all pro level season, provided you are combining that with a decent YPC. Conversely if you are under 60% something is going wrong and you are not playing well. You might note that this is similar to completion % where if a QB is completing over 70% he is probably playing pretty well and under 60% poorly and in between we need to go deeper.

Now you might ask why I am going on about this and that is because Calvin Ridley is at 57% catch percentage which is simply not good enough. Fun fact by the way just to make sure I was not missing some great stat I decided to look up his projected market value, and he is sitting at around 14.5m and that already feels generous but is less impressive when you realize for where is drafted and his age he is basically getting projected to be paid the money teams are paying there WR2/WR3.

Meanwhile lets look over to Flowers. He is averaging 10.1 YPC and catching 72.1% of the balls thrown his way which is why the NFL is taking notice of him.

As someone who does pretty well betting on all these teams, certainly the past couple weeks I have been, I tend to keep track of who the good players are on each team, and what the weak units are, in order to decide on matchup problems.

Also when comparing Engram and Andrews I think it is important to distinguish the gap between being in the upper 1/3 of NFL starters at your position and being all pro. Terry McLaurin and Mike Evans are pro bowl level guys. Hill and Jefferson are all pro level guys. That is kind of gap we are talking about in terms of ability. Engram is a great player and he is a weapon you would be happy to have who can help you win. Andrews is a weapon you can win because of. That is the gap between all pro and pro bowl. Someone who can help you win versus someone who is why you win.
Yea it’s early obviously but I’m expecting Flowers to be AB level good and certainly better than those Jags WRs

Idk why they didn’t just keep Carr if Garopollo was the other choice

So I don't recall the specifics of what Carr had left on his deal, but based on the deals both signed this year, Jimmy G is significantly cheaper.

Carr's deal with NO is 2 for $60M, fully gtd, and he'll likely get at least $10M more in year 3. So its effective 2 years, $70M.
Jimmy G's deal with LV is 2 for $33.75M, fully gtd. And he'll likely get 2 for $45M.

So Carr is pretty significantly more expensive than Jimmy G, though both teams could realistically move off of either guy after '24. Raiders may even look to move off Jimmy G after this year, but my guess is he'll be a bridge to a rookie.

Jimmy was josh mcdaniels guy due to their relationship in NE
I’m thinking there were some personality conflicts as well. Carr is serviceable , but might not have been worth the headache.

The Raiders don’t have a great culture from an organizational standpoint, but from what we’re seeing in New Orleans , Carr was likely making it worse

Jeff’s mentions say we were in on Chase Young.

If I had to guess, we were competitive in that race. But would also bet the “rivalry” between us made that a hard sell if SF was offering similar.

That’s too bad if it really came down local rivalry/jealousy. SF essentially got him for free with the comp formula. Really good snag on their part to get a player having a nice rebound year
