The Turnovers, the Offense and the Running Game

What's kinda crazy is Mark Andrews and Justice Hill both look like total JAGs to start this year. Mark had a slow stretch last year but then turned it on. Justice was borderline elite at his role last year.

Idk. It's just crazy to me that Lamar usually finds a way to do something even when his cast is bad. Not saying this one is, but it has It's unique challenges. OL blows, Hill not being that change of pace guy, Andrews not being a serious focal point etc

It's not that, we haven't drafted a guard in the first round since 2007 in Ben Grubbs. We aren't investing high picks in them, mid round picks are the only ones being invested in them.
So I'd say:
1. Not many teams use first round picks on interior Olineman.
2. What's considered a "high" pick? Is it just first rounders? Since Lamar got here, we've only picked four 2nd rounders. One is Rosengarten. Outside of Hurst back in 2018, I don't see a first round pick we've taken where I'd rather have a Guard (even a good one).

While I agree its been a challenge to get good, consistent Guard play since Yanda left, I can't complain about the lack of investment in the Oline in general. Stanley is a stud and was a top 10 pick. Linderbaum is a stud and will soon be the highest paid C in the league. Rosengarten was a 2nd rounder who played very well last year. That's a pretty strong investment. There's a lot of teams who don't spend nearly that much draft capital on Oline, especially at Tackle, which is arguably more important.

All you film study guys, how has Starks been so far?
I’m not going to get a chance to watch this weeks game, but based on preseason, week 1, and the eye test on this one… he’s solid right now. Nothing great but not doing anything egregiously wrong. My guess is he’ll start to pop as the rest of the secondary starts to settle in.

Something super encouraging is how well our pass game to the WRs seems to be working. We’re passing the ball incredibly well despite missing the guy who is either 1 or 2 in target priority. Andrews looks like asshole right now and our TEs aren’t really a factor in the pass game, our pass pro was awful today, Lamar was off for the first quarter, but the pass game still cooked today.

Big development from Lamar to see this production and rhythm without leaning on the TEs, historically he has.

I hope when Likely comes back, this continues and he doesn’t start forcing the ball to the TE. Add Likely to the fold and distribute the ball evenly, it’ll make us that much more dangerous.

Is it me or has Lamar added a moon ball to his repertoire? I don't remember him throwing like that, especially that often, before. Even his endzone fades never usually had that arc to them.

he was tragically misused in KC as a chain mover possession type.
It feels like usage doesn't matter as much as giving him a chance to make a play. If I have a critical down, DHop may be where I'm taking my chances if you don't get the look you want on the first read. His body control and ability to get himself in position to make a catch is his calling card now that the speed has dropped considerably.

No run game today, literally, and the offense still hung 30+

I don’t think the Ravens could have done that before. I know what you’re saying, it does look like he added that touch pass @Baltimorican

Glad to see Wallace and Walker involved in the pass game.

As for Andrews…..man. Can’t wait for Likely to come back

Our oline isnt as good as eagles but its no way we shouldnt be trying to set up for a tush push! I dnt think i ever seen a failed mark andrews push

I get what you're saying but it was the same spot as the previous bomb so it looks like Lamar & Dhop are gonna go to that underthrow to that spot until somebody makes a play on it.
I think it’s more of DHop making an adjustment to the ball rather than a planned under throw. lol
Even though he’s lost a step or 2, dude looks fully committed and still has the abilities.

Twice to the same spot? Nah, I think that's what they practiced and decided, that DHop wants it there when the defender has his back to the bomb. Low and inside.

And also also, it feels like we got a gem in Teddye Buchanan. He’s still learning of course, but the early returns have been great and he’s effectively beaten Trenton out already. He's always around the ball which is a really good sign for a young player.

i mean he looked phenomenal in preseason from week 2 onwards
clearly was being fast-tracked a little with how much they were putting on his plate and the coverage stuff looked great for a rookie 4th rounder

he's outplayed simpson enough that simpson basically mostly has been reduced to a backup role already

also cool that we're getting significant snaps from so many rookies already:
Starks, Green, Buchanan, Martin, Peebles are all playing starter or rotational snaps
Wester looks good as the PR
Loop looking decent so far as the kicker (less good on kickoffs)

That's true, and Mike Green even had some nice plays today! I forgot about him. Wiggins, Hamilton, Green all showed up to play. You know who has been quiet? Odafe Oweh.

he would have had a sack yesterday but was blatantly held (was called)

Wiggins and Hamilton had monster games. Hamilton is in the Garrett/Watt tier of elite defenders who take over games.

They really need to sell the White/Away Hamilton jersey on the Ravens shop so I can add it to the collection.
