The Offensive Line Thread

Austin Howard is a FA again who went through an NFL training camp and could likely come in for pennies on the dollar to provide a very very short term stopgap at RT until Brown is ready. He already knows the system and we could keep Hurst at G where he honestly belongs and move Lewis to C, and then cut Howard again if we like.

I know Howard wasn't quality last year, but literally anyone is better than Hurst at RT.

Im not against Howard but he would be learning the playbook from scratch, the same playbook that is preventing Brown from starting.

In theory this is a good idea but it’s highly unlikely we put Lewis at C after not seeing much time there this offseason.

They are somehow seemingly very content with Skura at C and I don’t think that will change until he shits the bed. I’d take Hurst over Skura at C if it came down to it. Literally ANYONE but Skura. He’s just too damn small and doesn’t have an anchor at all. So frustrating.

Do we really know that's what's preventing him, though? Eugene Monroe started a week after he got here from Jacksonville. Brown hasn't learned it from May to September and started four games?

Yeah that feels like a fan theory type argument
Especially as the coaching staff have described Orlando as ready to go - they supposedly just gave the nod to hurst through “experience” which suggests to me that they’d be fine with brown starting

I mean, for all we know, this truly could be a smoke screen to throw off the Bills.

Hey, I can hope, right?

A couple things-

Monroe was just before week 4 and started week 5 on. Kelechi Osemele started the first seven games. We got to see three games of Monreo-KO-Gradkowski-Yanda-Oher.

Now, how much of Osemele's poor play in 2013 (he really wasn't that great) can be attributed to the injury? I'm not sure, honestly. He was new to LG, so maybe that had something to do with it? I didn't think the injury started creeping up for him until week four-ish, but don't quote me on that.

Yanda had arguably the worst season of his career, especially in recent memory. Was this due to being sandwiched between Gradkowski and Oher? I'm not sure. I can't remember if he had injuries or not in 2013 after the season. I know he played in all 16 games.

I just completely worry about how bad Skura is. The last time we saw Hurst play tackle in live games, he gave PFF their two worst graded games ever.
We know how great of a Guard he turned out to be. I remember him having a lingering back injury through the first four weeks and eventually they just decided to shut him down for the year. I really do think it was mostly due to injury so we really didn't get the K.O we should've gotten. I don't recall Yanda having an injury that year but he didn't play up to what we're accustomed from seeing from him. You can chalk that up as a fluke year. I really don't think this line compares to how awful and overestimated the 2013 line was. Alex Lewis himself is leagues above Shiply in his own right.

I'm worried about Skura as well. Center is one of the most underappreciated positions in Football, they're underpaid and they go low in the draft usually. I think Skura will eventaully be replaced in all honesty because he's just not that good.

Teams have learned, good ones go early in the draft. Trouble is, college game doesn't produce many good ones lately.

This was mentioned in the Baltimore Sun. I don’t have the link.

I have to be honest; I didn't think he'd even be a great guard after that 2012 playoff run. He showed amazing pass blocking and the ability to open holes at the point of attack, but I didn't think he looked great pulling and didn't look sure of himself at the second level. I think Kubiak had as much to do with his development as anything.

I really seem to recall that it wasn't an issue until around the Dolphins game and that was week four. But he was really playing poorly before that.

We don't know how it's going to look until we actually go out there and play, but the point, for me, is that I don't take any chances at all when it comes to the offensive line.

OL play in general is trash in the nfl these days. College ball has really fucked over the nfl, by recruiting mega athletes as high as possible without even bothering to check if they got a head on their shoulders. If you’re big and athletic you can play OL for us and our system will mask all your issues (cough laremy tunsil). Then they don’t coach these guys up at all, just hold your man for 3 seconds and we’ll be good. That’s why Wisconsin and Notre Dame and Ohio state are cranking out OL like hotcakes, because they worry about a players mental fortitude and technical understanding, and Stanford does the same and they’re about to up next on the OL factories.

I’ve always hated that college ball caters to shit players with mush between the ears. Coach these fucking kids up.

The line looked solid from left to right last week, and Skura's performance against Kyle Williams shows he's capable of being a starting center

Change my mind

Did filmstudy ever come out with his offense review from last game? I haven’t seen it I was looking forward to that so I wouldn’t have to go back and watch it myself lol

So my takeaways.. Hurst and Skura obviously suck. But that's not the thing.

Stanley looks to be in the start of a downyear when we really don't need it. I know certain fans hate that we took him over trading up for Ramsey... But he was very good in his first two years. Certain members on here want elite players and nothing but them, but having a rock solid starter at LT who can do it for 10 years justifies the pick easily. Here's to hoping he can get out of whatever funk he's in. He was good vs. Jerry Hughes, and it's somewhat concerning that he hasn't taken the next step to be an elite LT, but he's still good overall. He did have a really bad game vs. the Bengals and it's concerning.

Alex Lewis looks mediocre. He has plenty of time to prove me wrong. But.. Told ya so(still better than Hurst was last year though).

Skura is obvious. He's like Hurst was a G. Solid pass protector, absolute shit run blocker. It's important to note that vs. the Bills he only got a handful of snaps vs. Kyle Williams(@The Raven ). He looked good, because they're the bills. We played a real front 4 yesterday. Look at what happened. He wasn't that good, he's a liability.

Yanda doesn't look like Yanda. Well Yanda at 100%. There are still flashes of the dominant guard play but I think he just needs to knock of the rust. A big part of improving the line moving forward is going to be him returning to 100%. Which he needs to do soon.

Hahahahahaha. Oh fucking Hurst. Call RBates about Hurst all you want. Newsflash. He's that bad. He was repeatedly dogwalked the entire time in both games. Starting him at RT was stupid, I have said it was stupid, Harbaugh is a moron for making him his favorite player for some reason, and our justification for not starting Brown is further proven to be FUCKING BULLSHIT(@RavensMania). I don't care if he doesn't have a full grasp on the playbook. Brown would have to make an active effort to be just as bad as Hurst.

I don't know what we're going to do about the C position. RT is obvious. Once Brown gets playing time we should be fine there.

I’m wondering if Stanley is hurt. I remember he had some injury in preseason. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is. And yeah, I absolutely would still take Ramsey over Stanley but it’s not like I hate Stanley. I just love the talent Ramsey has.

here is the problem with stanley. Not only does he get hurt a lot his game declines more than most LT's when he's not 100%. He's been servicable. right now he looks like he could be on the michael Oher trajectory.

Yeah you gotta wonder if he is soft. I know those were concerns coming out mainly in the run game but they’ve sort of been validated so far.
