How does England address global warming?

also in a terrible manner - our conservative government also doesnt seem to give a shit as much as they should - but they at least pretend to care and dont dispute the science

a few years ago they had the opportunity to diversify into more renewables but they in stead ploughed on with a new nuclear power plant but there are at least some renewables investments going on - i spend some of my time on the South coast of England and there they are just finishing construction on an already working windfarm - a viable option given that we live on an island lol

but we could and should be doing so much more to phase out fossil fuels and the use of petrol and diesel in cars (which would require a massive change in infrastructure)

the problem is that capitalism as a system probably wont and isnt inclined to deal with climate change in any reasonable amount of time given the threat it poses - the construction of economic systems etc. are probably going to have to change to save the planet in time which isnt going to happen for various reasons - mostly due to self-interest and the fact that corporations cause over 70% of carbon emissions

Yep 4 pinocchios for Sarah Sanders. Ridiculous. I remember all this talk in the late 70's/early 80's.

According to The Raven article she got 4 pinocchios for saying there was talk about global freezing before.

right i understand what you're saying

global cooling was a phenomenon considered in the 1970s so she's not wrong that it was talked about before in history - but it hasnt been a recognised scientific concern since 1979 really and has been rejected in every possible way by the scientific community

it mostly emerges from a misunderstanding about the cyclical nature of ice ages and carbon dioxide levels pre-ice age... it is wrong

even fossil fuel and oil companies have had published research since the late 1970s and infamously exxon has had knowledge of human-caused global warming since 1981 but as a collective these companies then funded deniers - climate change denial has been majorly perpetrated by the fossil fuels lobby for decades

so sanders is not wrong that there will have been articles about global cooling/freezing as a concept but it is not accepted science and hasnt been since before she was born - so she can quibble with being called a liar but her comments were clearly disingenuous and in bad faith - and tbh the ideas behind them were flat out wrong

Thing is I have to disagree about it being talked about it being accepted science since it was around that time cable tv came into existence and I just couldn't stop watching the weather channel and it was scientists talking about it. Its also quite interesting Google only seems to direct you to sites that sit there and say these were myths.

my point is that around that time it was the scientific theory of the time - you're not wrong - but that science is more than 40 years old and has been disproven and is not accepted science anymore

the great thing about science is that when it learns something new that changes everything it adapts and changes its theories and paradigms to fit the new information

more than 97% of peer-reviewed science says that global warming is happening and that is being significantly contributed to by humans

if a credible study came along that proved the accepted science as wrong then science would test that theory and adapt and change it's paradigm to fit the new information and evidence in

Looks like the people in France are over Macron and want him out. Those protests in Paris are getting pretty intense.

French protests are like Italian government changes or US gridlock. It's when they're not happening that you should be concerned haha.

I'm probably the only one here but the story I'm finding most gripping atm is the Huawei CFO being arrested. A Chinese national getting arrested in Canada on an extradition treaty over unilateral sanctions that no other government agrees with. The terms for getting Canada to make the arrest seem a little questionable to me (like using national security to justify the tariffs) and all this is coming with the backdrop where no one knows what will happen in the long run with this trade war that has such big ramifications for the entire global economy.

There are so many moving parts that are so interlinked and it's so fascinating to watch it all play out. I tried watching cable news for a bit to see if any live updates were happening but everyone was obsessed with the Cohen developments (yawn) so that was a pretty big letdown. I'm a huge cynic about 24-hour TV news but somehow I still get disappointed.
