Offseason: offense or defense?

obviously get a fucking C and G, but other than that, do you guys think we should O or D heavy?

Personally, I think FS has become top priority, maybe even more than any spot on offense. Weddle will be gone, and good safety play is a must, in an afc where you have to beat a pat mahomes to make the SB, you need great safeties. Weddle is done, Jefferson is above average at best and shaky in coverage. Deionte Thompson has risen up to my top priority prospect, sadly we don’t have a 2nd rounder to trade up if we need to.

After that, I don’t know if there’s an OL I want in the first, at which point Mack Wilson(with Mosley walking and getting us a comp) or an interior rush DT become my top priorities. We can no longer afford to have slow safeties like weddle arriving late and blowing plays, having a box safety trying to run with elite WRs, and depending on a 250+pound LB who’s often injured running with WRs and TEs. We have too much old school defense, and in key moments when we need speed, it fails us. When we need pass rush, we have to blitz for it because our interior DL sucks at pressure. We need to modernize our defense. This is why I think we need yet another defensive focused offseason.... sadly.

Who are some free agents we can target?
A FS who's got range and ball instincts. Most of the S you listed to me are just SS, and we have Jefferson, Elliott and Clark on our roster for another 2-3 seasons.

RB extend Ty and Gus, draft Henderson. I haven't watched his tape yet, but I really like some of his runs I saw during the TV breaks, if he hits the open field he's gone. That's what we're missing atm.

WR: as of now this is a meh draft class. for the right price extend brown.

OL: Matt Paradis or draft a C. I'd like to see Stanley-Hurst-Bozeman-Yanda-Brown for the rest of the season. I think we might draft a G in the later rounds.

DL: need a 3down interior guy. via FA Jarrett or Gunter. Pierce gets the 2nd round tender. Try to trade

LB: I expect a high price tag for Mosley 12M+.Williams got 10m per, so Mosley will get at least 11+. Kwon Alexander or Hicks can be signed to a cheaper contract.

I listed one safety and that’s Deionte Thompson and he is absolutely a single high FS with range and ballhawking instincts, if you think he’s a SS you clearly haven’t watched him and let the bama bias get to you.

I'm sorry I thought you posted the FA list. No I actually want us to draft him in the 1st I mentioned that in the cfb thread multiple times.

I hear theres a potential hof safety coming out this. Derwin James. Ozzie will draft him if he falls to 16, no questions asked

Ahh gotcha. I’ve heard quite a few people say Deionte Thompson is a SS and I just scratch my head until it bleeds when I hear that bullshit

The Nice part with the D is that most of the spots are set, we just need to inject some youth, the O is a bit harder but there's a reason this team wient toe-to-toe with the Saints and Chiefs

Of course he will. Ozzie knows how to pick safeties. Forget Ed Reed how about Matt Elam and Terrence Brooks?

Paradis is a ZBS blocker at C to the extreme. In the hands of an offensive genius like Sean Payton Id be good with having the power scheme personel that we have with a zone blocking C simply because we could kill teams in multiple ways. If we keep Roman, I could see us doing it. Roman implements a lot of zone concepts into the power concepts(it's why OBJs PFF grade isn't as high as it could be. He struggles with those, but those are beneficial to Lamar)

For all this bitching about Derwin James... We need to move the fuck on. We have to play the cards that have been dealt. Get a FS in free agency next year, chin up and move on. These trenches above everything else needs buildings. This oline needs to be built up. C is far and away the biggest need on the team right now. Skura isn't Gino levels of bad, but he's still pretty terrible. If we keep him, you can kiss the prospects of the playoffs goodbye. Eventually teams will catch on and figure out how to stop the running game.

We need to focus on acquiring better personel. I think resigning Brown is a MUST. Having a deep threat with the kind of player Lamar is is vital. Especially since Brown is actually a good route runner and is willling to go over the middle. He's not just a sole deep threat ALA a Torrey or a Mike Wallace, he's better, and having that threat is important. Snead is going to stay, and frankly that's a good thing. Crabtree is good for another year, but acquiring a true #1 caliber WR option via the draft is a must within the next two years. This upcoming draft has some options, and I would draft a WR anyways, but we are more likely to get another complimentary piece rather than a true #1.

The TE position is set. Hurst and Andrews should be a good duo moving forwards. But upgrading that interior needs to be the primary focus of the team. Yanda is set to retire any day now, Hurst is the definition of mediocre and we really need to stop settling, and don't get me started on Skura. Sure, Bradley Bozeman potentially mitigates this problem, but the interior could really use an overhaul like the WR corps got. Lamar has shown promise, let's not get him killed.

I know everyone is aboard the Gus Bus, and that Dixon is back and Montgomery looks good, but goddamnt we could use a true playmaker. Gus looks decent, but he's average. Lamar has been a low key godsend for the guy. He's better off as a compliment, and as talented as Dixon is, I don't trust the guy to stay healthy. Montgomery is once again an example of how terrible our OC is at situational football. The guy is a really good third down back and we don't use him that way. Resigning Montgomery is a good idea. As much as I preach the oline, it'd be hard to pass up on Damien Harris. Dude is a playmaker and a scheme verisitle RB who does everything well and is fresher than anything would possibly indicate. He's the ideal fit for Roman and Lamar.

I've always been a fan of singing defense and drafting offense it is just cheaper. The best defensive player (exclude mack and Donald) will only be 3/4 of the price of an offensive player at the same level

Still lacking playmakers. We need one great linemen and one decent one as I don't know how much longer yanda plays

Like lost said, I would love to see Mcphee back so much I loved everything about him. Cheap better tackling replacement for ZDS

If I had to chose, it would be offense. We have a gem of a QB, let's invest and give him the talent he needs to succeed. Start with an elite C and a WR1 and we'll be talking.

We should go heavy on the offense. Let's not make the same mistake we did with Joe and not surround Lamar with talent. Fix the interior O-line above all else and then build from there.

Hopefully Ozzie teaches Decosta the ways of an Ozzie bargain contract.
Unpopular opinion here: I don't want Ozzie teaching anyone a thing about "bargain" contracts.

So many times we got guys at a "bargain" when they ended up being way overpaid in the long run (Williams, Jefferson) or the "bargain" really was just the top of the trash heap (almost any vet olineman or WR in the past 10 years not named Steve Smith).

Anyways, heavy on offense. If we don't come out of the next draft with two offensive linemen in the top three I'll be disappointed. I know that sounds crazy but we're facing a talent deficit on the line, and we're about to suffer turnover. Yanda's old. Lewis is a big ole question mark. Skura is meh. Stanley is soon to be in a contract year. Really, the only two sure things we have are Hurst and Eluemunor and neither of them are sure things. It's time to reload.

We definitely need a better contracts guy than Moriarty, but Ozzie does get some pretty cheap deals as well as really bad deals.

Stanley will five years before we have to worry about extending him, so that will be at the end of 2020. I’d agree we need to draft a lineman in the top 3 rounds, bu not ne essarily two of them. Depends on what we do in FA as well. Btw, Senat is on IR and he seemed to be a pretty good swing tackle.

Ronnie Stanley has been an absolute hero after an inconsistent start - he's been playing at a high level and playing at a high level through injury

we have our 2 tackles of the future...
Ronnie Stanley's soon to face a contract year, hence the long term question mark.
