Lamar Jackson

Back from a vacation and whoala! Lamar Jackson is 4-1; should have been 5-0 but for a desperate 4th and whatever throw reminiscent of 'miracle in mile high' throw by Flacco... we're truly blessed to get a franchise QB for what is technically 2 second round picks. Once Lamar gets the right coaching for his mechanics and some fundamentals, our offense is essentially unstoppable unless of course LJ is hurt. I can't even imagine the potency of this offense when that happens. But, maybe these are the right coaches for him or maybe not. But, the powers that be need to find the absolute right coaching to help him accelerate that growth. To me 2019 LJ will be amazing to watch because he'll be throwing with lot better mechanics. The best part of LJ is that he reads defenses like a veteran and is extremely football savvy and smart. We couldn't be luckier folks.

if he does have a successful career its going to come off the back of his passing inside the numbers - he's already great at reading the crossers and slants and finding the soft spots at the down marker but he's struggled at identifying when the seam is open on a consistent basis - with snead, andrews and hurst all on the roster next season if he can improve how he reads those spaces in coverage he could be incredibly difficult to stop

one of the things i think ill be looking for in receivers in the 2019 draft when i get to the offseason will be how well they run routes like the slot fade that create room outside from a slot alignment and how well they run a post or a curl from a wider alignment

"I'm getting buzz as a freshman" usually signifies that he's lying and trying to flex his ego on you because he knows he's out of line. If NFL edge rushers are falling for his fakes, which the are, then this high school kid better be the next Lawrence Taylor.... Minus the sexual misconduct.

This is akin to RBates saying that the run first QBs are the future because of Colin Kaepernick and RGIII and that a statue like Flacco would never win a ring because he claimed to be on a practice squad once.
I gotta say, there's kind of a beautiful irony to Flacco being succeeded by a mobile QB. Somewhere, RBates is remembering old arguments from 2009, feeling vindicated that he was right all along :D

Big time irony because for years this franchise and fanbase (not all of course) were against "mobile" QB types like Troy Smith and my main man Tyrod Taylor etc. Now, here comes Lamar Jackson who's the talk of the town and now the FO is ready to move on beyond Flacco-the proto-typical stand in the pocket passer.

My issue with FO's is that they all know what type of QB's these players are (dual-threats) but once they hit the NFL, instead of building an offense around their skill set, they want to change them into being something that they already knew they weren't in the first place-pocket passers and thereby hindering them from being themselves.

Vick brought major attention to the dual-threat QBs. Took the league by storm, however, he'd admit to it later that he took too many risks and chances because of his ability to outrun defenses. He said that he struggled with sliding to avoid hits and that he should have taken better care of himself cause it would have extended his career. Something that he has advised Lamar on.

Well you can be mobile QB and still a good pocket passer. See Deshaun and Wilson.

Hopefully Lamar can develop that pocket passing game .

People were against Troy Smith because he wasn't a good QB, mobile or otherwise. And it's not like Taylor has been lighting the league on fire since leaving us. He's a backup, again. It's less that people were against mobile QBs, and more that they didn't want those specific mobile QBs starting here.

I'd have no qualms about Cam Newton, Russell Wilson(what he's evolved to), or Watson starting here. They're all pass first guys who happen to be great runners. Lamar shows a lot of promise and progress.... He still has a lot of work to do.

Cam newton, while I like the guy, and think he gets too much shit... he’s pretty weak as a passer. The extra ability obviously makes up for it in a big way, and yeah cam might be a pass first guy, but if he didn’t offer that athleticism he wouldn’t be a quality starter in this league.

You know who he reminds me of as a passer, purely from an in-the-pocket standpoint?.... joe Flacco, and this isn’t the first time I’ve said that, their play from the pocket is damn near identical all the way down to the lack of pocket awareness, throwing motion, and inconsistent clunky and panicked releases.

Okay then I’ll be sure to not leave either since Ravens are undefeated when I’m not away on vacation as I missed the Chiefs game as I was in Paris. I’ll stay local I promise
Good to know, I mean my dog can’t leave the couch during games.

I was talking with a friend and he thinks that Lamar can't read a defense. What do you guys think?

I disagree with him, personally, but I'm not as good as you guys are at explaining why. And I'm not going back through 100 pages to look for the answer.

Most of the time he's good at reading a defense and going through his progressions. He still makes some rookie mistakes though.

He can read defenses but I think he has legitimate issues getting the ball to the WR. He’s coming along, however.

he's always been great reading high-low in vertical offences where the routes all matriculate downfield and he reads back towards his checkdown - he's been good at that since college

in the nfl he's been brilliant reading the keyed defender in the zone-read and in the RPO which is why our running offence has been seemingly unstoppable because he makes the right decision the majority of the time

in terms of pocket passing he seems to miss some obvious reads and can occasionally fixate on a specific receiver when the ball is designed to go to that player pre-snap

he's really good reading quickly across the field when he has multiple routes in his progression - in fact i think there's a stat that PFF has that indicates that his completion percentage increases the further along his progression he gets which generally indicates successful field reading

he's still inconsistent reading the seam vs cover 2 and zone in general though and that's annoying because that's where he'll probably find the biggest and most frequent big plays in our passing attack's current state

inaccuracy and a limited opening up of the field for him so far have been much more significant issues
