I'll take our secondary against anyone in the league and even more so against a rookie QB like Murray. He might make some plays against us, but he's gonna make some mistakes too and now we have Thomas roaming around to make teams pay.

We need to take advantage of their secondary now. Have Lamar throw deep plenty, test them. I'm worried though about Murray.

2017: Trubisky beat us as a rookie at home.
2018: Mayfield best us in Cleveland.
2019: Kyler Murray?

Again, love Harbaugh but the way we play down to teams makes me think we could have issues.

Earl Thomas becoming a raven must have made him the target of every nfl hater. The greatest safety of this generation who had 3 picks and 5PDs in 4 games last year is washed up according to most fans. Where do football fans get this shit from?

The match-up with Baker (and Landry and OBJ and Njoku) is where things will get interesting.

They wouldn't have this energy if he never got hurt.

I agree but if our front 7 is terrible it makes thing hard for our secondary

But then again our pass rush wasn't amazing by any means. Yeah they were unworldly against the Titans, but that was an anomaly. I'd rather have a shit pass-rush with an elite secondary than an elite pass-rush with a shit secondary (see 2014 for this reason).

Our D-line is mostly the same so the only big difference is at LB. Young is better in coverage than Mosley and Peanut finished the year really strong last year so there's reason to believe that they'll be able to hold down the fort in the middle of our defense.

What makes an unstoppable defense has changed over the past 15 years from a dominant front 7 to a dominant secondary (see legion of boom and to a lesser extent Denver of a couple seasons back).

I think in today's NFL its become the case that great OLines beat great DLines, but great secondaries beat great WRs.

So do the new arrivals get a welcome/welcome back thread.

Also kinda wondering what this does to the 53 man roster.

Seems like DeCosta is saying, at positions where competition could be useful, let's bring in guys who have qualities that made them high draft picks and see if we can get the best out of them. Especially on vet min type deals. I keep reading that many on this board think we're a miss the playoffs team this year. I just wholeheartedly disagree. I think the offense takes 3 steps forward(we'd probably like 5 steps), and the defense takes 1/2 - 1 step back. I think we win 10 or 11 next year.

watching some 2018 preseason stuff - zach seiler is a the strongest guy on the field on every snap he's in on - dude is a wrecking ball and i hope he takes that step and works his way into the rotation this year because he's so disruptive and he has the length to be a factor with PDs too

Yeah. I think he just needed a season to deal with the jump from super small school team to NFL. Him, Mack, Willis, Pierce, and a healthy Henry could be a great line for rotation and disrupting offenses. Though it could be rough the first half of the season due to youth and inexperience.

I’m not sure how Willis beats the logjam ahead of him tbh - I can’t see us keeping 7 DL and Willis is more of a penetrating 1-gapped than the kind of 2-gapping we teach

Williams
Pierce
Wormley
Henry
Sieler
Mack

Willis I think has to beat out one of those guys and I’m not sure he does in all honesty

We’ve got an interesting udfa class but I’m not sure how they fit in to the 53 - but maybe Willis develops and forces his way in I suppose

Willis is gonna get the phantom IR treatment

quite possibly - the problem is he isnt going to learn to win at the LoS without practice - it's not like a corner/receiver/TE who can get better without practice by learning the playbook etc. a DL with bad pad level needs to practice
not saying i agree with it, just that its a possibility. ive never liked the phantom ir, every player who gets it ends up out of the league within a year or 2

To be fair though that is because generally if you are not good enough to help out the team this year, then are you really going to be an asset in the years to come?
