2020 WR Draft Thread

Charm City

Pro Bowler
Why have I been sleeping on Collin Johnson? He’s got mike Evans potential no exaggeration. First of all the size, he’s maybe 10lbs less than evans and by year 2-3 he’d likely be identical in size. He plays with every inch and pound at his disposal, really gets the arms out there in any direction to secure tough grabs. He physically bullies dbs and just plays like he’s more man than they are, he moves incredibly well for 6’5” 220 and really changes direction and does it with wiggle and burst. He high points extremely well, and his awareness of the boundaries is spectacular, he really knows how to snag one well over the chalk and come down in bounds.

dude needs to be talked about more in Baltimore, far better prospect than miles Boykin imo, and due to the strength in class he could probably be had a whole round later
I'm advocating having him add a few pounds and be like Darren Waller was supposed to be, a 3rd WR/4th TE. He also had some really good footwork during the 1v1 drills at the probowl.

You should take a look at Isaiah Hodgins from Oregon State. He is not the fastest receiver but has good size
and very good hands.

Who are your top five of the ones you have watched?

John Hightower (Boise St). I left highlights but maybe some deeper digging. Also Cephus from Wisconsin.

Let us know your take on Lipscomb and Bowden and where you think they might go when you have time. Intrigued by Bowden
also, apparently the ravens met at EW game with a guy called Chris Finke? out of Notre Dame

top 5 based on what ive seen so far in order:

Jefferson
Higgins

higgins im not completely sold on as the 5th guy - Hamler and Mims I currently have at the same tier as jefferson and higgins

some quick notes on the receivers so far:

Van Jefferson probably the best technical route runner in the class ive come across - probably maxed out though - he's clearly pretty close to his ceiling already which depending on how he does at the combine will make a massive difference to his draft stock - but he's a really refined route runner which is nice to see - makes him intriguing - really impressed especially with how he did against the best corner in college football against LSU - at times Stingley couldn't get near him - could be a 3rd round pick - if he runs really well he might sneak into the 2nd - if he runs badly he might fall down to mid-late day 3

Chase Claypool likewise is going to have a draft stock that depends a lot on his 40 time - has shown nice moments of lateral agility but mostly operates as an effective big receiver - never going to be quick in short areas because of his size but might have the long-speed to at least threaten deep - not completely sure how to grade claypool yet

Devin Duvernay is exciting - just so explosively quick and has great hands - saw a ridiculous stat about his drop numbers (something like 3 drops his entire college career) - has run a fairly limited route tree and not really faced much press - that said he's got a decent feel for zone coverage and at the senior bowl he showed a little more route running nuance - that being said he's still not really faced press much there as well - partly that's because his speed is terrifying those corners - also had a massive game against LSU (albeit out of the slot)

ok so lynn bowden is a nightmare to scout - because none of the youtube cut-ups are from before he became the qb - like great i do appreciate those things too and his versatility as a weapon all over the formation - but i would also like to actually be able to evaluate him as a receiver...

EDIT: found some minimal tape of his 2018 season (nothing from the first 5 games of 2019 though)

Bowden is a weapon with the ball in his hands and a playmaker - first things first - looked really comfortable understanding his routes and route concepts albeit his route tree was a bit limited and he's a raw route runner (and i cant imagine that's got much better without practicing lol) but after the catch (or taking a snap or hand-off) he's a threat from anywhere on the field - dynamic athlete - is someone who i can see making an immediate impact in the NFL returning punts and being a gadget type weapon while he develops as a receiver (which i think he has the potential to do) - if he develops as a route runner he's going to be a big-time threat in the NFL

Here's some 2018 stuff. Cant really tell if he's a great route runner or not but he's definitely a playmaker.

@Edgar - my guess is he's getting selected as high as day 2 - if teams are drafting for need at WR then they'll likely have him graded lower but he's an offensive weapon who has a chance to get on the field earlier than most of the other players who might be available towards the end of the 3rd round for sure - might go earlier - I think the 3rd is where id be comfortable with him going

James Proche is kind of interesting out of the slot - not a guy who does well vs press etc. (partly why him being a slot is helpful) - not a particularly crazy athlete and not crazy long but he's a nice route runner who manages to separate consistently well especially in zone coverage but has shown the ability to create large separation vs off coverage too

also happens to have sticky hands and is unbelievable in contested catch situations which is bizarre for how relatively small he is

ive seen reports that pats scouts really like him - and i understand why... he's a competitive, productive slot receiver with a 'knack' - smooth operator

id say he's a decent looking early-mid day 3 guy

Justin Jefferson, van jefferson, and KJ Hill are KILLERS with their route game, they’re all so nuanced and just operate on a different level of understanding than the rest of the field. Justin Jefferson is excellent at last second separation, challenging dbs and getting in close and taking extremely sudden sharp breaks and knowing how to find the ball and snag it immediately after this break, his kind of separation is something that translates well to the nfl. Van Jefferson and KJ Hill both like to setup dbs with footwork, they both like to take dramatic false steps with excellent shoulder fakes but they do it quick and compact, they really sell the hell out of the fake breaks, both guys are lethal on slants this way, they’re so often just roasting guys in the first 3 steps by just shaking out and breaking in, it’s stunning how often they do it and how it always works, like nobody jumps them and nobody sits on it, they do it over and over again and they’re so convincing that it still works.

Agreed - operating on a completely different wavelength to the rest of the class

Van Jefferson is the best at getting a DB to flip their hips and declare by biting on a hard stick/jab which is why he gets pretty quick separation

KJ Hill I feel like is the better of the 2 at consolidating his separation with additional head fakes and bending his routes after the break (where necessary) to pull the corner away from the ball and stack them more effectively

For someone who doesn’t seem particularly sudden, Justin Jefferson’s change of direction is lethal - violent even
