Welcome to Baltimore: LBs Patrick Queen (28) and Malik Harrison (98)

What makes me giddy with happiness is the fact that we get Patrick Queen the best ILB in the draft without trading up and the Steelers get the second best ILB in last year's draft by trading their entire draft away! The Steelers must hate us so much right now!

great read/react..
.super intuitive to the point that you think he's seeing it before it happens.
physical at line of scrimmage
easy in match coverage....improves the team right away
could add weight and he tackles high which needs fixing...works best when he's kept clean
best LB in the class at 28 is good value and I can't wait to see who we add defensively. lots of good players still around

Devin bush wouldve been the best ilb in this class.. he had a nice rookie season last year

This was an absolute steal at 28 and then you factor in how depleted we are at the position. Damn good shit Decosta. I expect some combo of Edge, WR, and IOL tomorrow.

Just quickly went back through his Oklahoma tape and I think the thing that struck me is how naturally he seems to drop into coverage and how quickly he makes good decisions in the passing game

Pretty happy with the pick. Annoyed with my smug son who guessed correctly. Had to remind him he was still a Packers fan when the mile high miracle happened. Not that theres anything wrong with that.

I like Queen, I'm not a fan of the value because I have questions on if he's our MIKE guy given the size and coverage is hard to translate over at the next level. Regardless, we need an ILB really bad and the way the board fell did not do us justice. I would've loved to see guys like Cesar Ruiz, Justin Jefferson, or K'Lavon Chaisson but the board just didn't fall that way. I knew we were not taking Epenesa since he wasn't valued apparently due to his combine. This is probably the best pick we could make given the circumstances and I've lightened up on it. Queen will give us coverage skills at ILB that we haven't had in a while. He would probably need to pack on more weight in order to beat guards at the 2nd level as I would imagine that would be his toughest adjustment. 28 was just not a good place to be in this draft in particular but I'll definitely take Queen given the circumstances.

Cynthia Frelund has Queen to the Ravens as the best value pick of the first round. I don't know what exactly goes into her models, but apparently they account for ability, scheme fit, need, and opponents faced.

one of her regular valuations is similar to wins above replacement (and often her models do thousands of simulations of the season)

my guess is that our major need at LB + his great value in terms of being on the board later than expected means he is an incredibly useful part to add to our defence in her modelling

She noted that he was the #16 player in her unbiased (i.e. not accounting for the team) model, so that definitely fits. Drafted 12 spots "too late" and an ideal fit for need and scheme.

I also just spotted that Queen was DJ's #15 player, ahead of Murray (#17).

I mean my only fear with Queen is a relative lack of experience and game tape. That does lead me to wonder how much of the game tape is the small sample size, but the tape that exists is fantastic.

im not worried about that - he was only not playing because the guy in front of him was making the playcalls and LSU didnt want to change that

you see "film junkie" moments all over Patrick Queen's tape

Do you think we would have preferred Murray over Queen if they were both still available? Murray better block shedder, Queen better in pass coverage.

Yeh that last clip is really impressive!

How is he best deployed? Does he need a downhill thumper next to him?

he's not massive but he's effective coming downhill to fill the gap by being aggressive - he wears that 'undersized' tag like a badge of honour though and i think you'll see him fill out his frame a bit too (he's so young - just looked it up and he's the 2nd youngest of all the major prospects, maybe any prospects, in the draft class - only Noah Igbinoghene was younger...)

side note: i just realised that next year there will be players in the draft class who were born this millennium...
