1. This was inevitable anyway. There's so very few stud LTs in the league that the values were only going to skyrocket. The 2020 class is supposed to be one of the best ever in that regard, and you've had only a handful of even competent LTs coming out of college the last few years.
2. All that really matters is the guaranteed money, not the total amount or even the annual amount. I had Ronnie slotting in around $40-45M guaranteed, and Tunsil got $40M guaranteed, so I think that's about right.
You can sign Stanley for 5 years for $150M, but if only $50M of is guaranteed, the rest doesn't even matter. He'll be on year-to-year contracts after two years like most long term deals.

Also props to the Texans for a good deal structure. That's how Stanley's deal should look. Modest bonus, larger base salaries, helps flatten out the cap hits a bit, especially on the back end.

The LT market was so low also because the best LTs in the league were all locked up on really long term deals that mean they haven’t hit the market a 2nd time yet and no young T had really reset the market until Tunsil

also, i don't buy into his grades over the last two years because lamar DOES help him tremedously when it comes to his ability to move around the pocket.

But Ronnies played at a high level in the flacco era too... he’s not been a year and half of great play

He also does things with his athleticism for Lamar that almost no other tackles in the league can offer with his ability to get outside to spring Lamar around the edge

1 player isn't worth handicapping our capspace by 20%

sorry. Ronnie Stanley isn't a once or even twice or even thrice a generation player.

Not sure where you get 20% from - his cap hit at most is going to be around 13% of the teams cap even if the salary cap doesn’t increase next year and he has a completely flat cap hit (may not be backloaded but won’t be completely flat because of expected inflation)

If you won’t extend Ronnie Stanley - who on this team would you extend and give a 2nd contract to?

Overrated? You kidding me?

How much would you pay an Ogden or Walter Jones?

Do your homework then. I'd rather have a solid tackle than a very good one ( sorry, i just don;t see ronnie as elite) and more cap. He's in a good situation here and he's a very good player ( Jordan Gross, Da'Brickashaw Ferguson, Matt Light)

But we're going to end up paying him like he's a HOF

and he's not. I'd rather have a slight downgrade and a shitload more cap to spend.

I also find his run blocking to be average at best

If stanley is willing to be reasonable with the contract than fine

but if he's asking for 4-5 per year mill more than tunsil he can go take his ego elsewhere

I'd pay crazy money for a prime yanda or a quenton nelson or a prime jason peters

NOT Ronnie Stanley

1) that's how the market works - good players get paid elite money (and then a year or 2 later they're back to where they should be on the list as everyone else gets extended)
2) Ronnie has been performing at an elite level for 2 years now - and the first 2 years of his career he played at a pretty high level too - he's in the upper eschelon of tackles in the league right now - arguably the best (honestly i dont see many who could claim they're better right now) - he deserves to be the highest paid tackle in the league
3) clearly the above would suggest it's not lamar that's making him look better - that sort of thinking ends up with deshaun watson getting teed off in the pocket - athleticism and escapability only helps if you're not facing a firing squad... and lamar's not at his best when throwing on the move - lamar's at his best as a passer in an empty pocket - that's when the LT is the most important and Ronnie Stanley is undoubtedly the best pass protector in the league

Ronnie has been an elite pass protector and average run blocker.
You're right that's how the market works.
I think in order to remain competitive we cannot afford much more than what tunsil got. So 23 would be as far as I'd consider.

I'd like to point out that stanley is NOT even a good run blocker. He's an average one. If we could draft a GOOD pass blocker and combines with a good to very good runblocker, in the first round and save all that for 5 seasons. it's a no brainer

IF Stanley was like a prime Jason peters or prime trent williams i'd understand BUT he's neither. Run blocking is part of being a tackle and he's not that good there.

But wait a minute, isn't the whole point of the draft to get as many elite or close-to-elite players as possible?

Consider the whole picture if we move Stanley especially now Yanda is gone and Skura is trying to make comeback from knee explosion, we would have a pro bowl RT and 4 below league average linemen to the left of him. It would be our worst ever oline.

not if we invest next year AND it's about developing good linesman. Let's see how this season unfolds with our interior talent.

you need at least 2 anchors on your OL to have a chance at a good OL unit, and 3 really to have a good chance at being in the top tier of OL in the league
