Anyone have a dark horse breakout player for the ravens? Doesn’t have to be a guy who becomes a star but just a much lesser known guy you think can make a big leap? I’m going with jihad ward, he felt like a guy Wink really loved having here, he had stretches where he was living in backfields, and he brings some quality play across a lot of positions, edge, 5tech, I think I’ve seen him standup rushing inside and out as well and maybe even some 3 tech. Dudes got a well rounded physical skill set too, he’s got a great build for his role and he has all the athleticism and power you need, if he sharpens up he could have a McPhee 2014 like season.
how cool would that be, raiders see our castoff break out with Darren Waller, we see the raiders castoff break out with Ward.
i liked ward but i dont think he's going to make a leap and be more than he was last year - for me he's a quality rotational piece
i dont know if deshon elliott satisfies the criteria here but i think even with both starters in place at safety, deshon is going to force his way onto the field to allow chuck to stay close to the LoS in those dime looks
and ill be bold here and say that while i think earl thomas was pretty good last year, that deshon elliott will make more splash plays than him if he stays healthy for a whole season
if im not allowed deshon elliott because he's not under the radar enough then id say Ben Powers, he looked much better than he should have looked for a guy who couldnt get activated all year in that week 17 matchup against the steelers - the powers starting at RG train got completely derailed the moment that we signed dj fluker but im not sure that discussion should have ended - powers was impressive in preseason and impressive in week 17 and i think tools-wise he has more to offer than mekari (who did well but his length is always going to be a flaw that he struggles to overcome no matter how well he did in relief of skura)
it may disappoint some but i think because of the potentially abbreviated camp that as long as skura's knee seems to be ok that we're not going to see competition at all 3 interior OL spots like we might have with a full offseason and preseason - think we're going to see Bozeman and Skura at LG and C and then competition at RG only
and tbh that's probably ok if Skura comes back close the level he played at last year - completely possible that all 5 starting OL are still on rookie deals
i mean there's a legitimate possibility that if fluker's not everything he can be and we only keep 8 OL that every single one of our OL be that starter or backup will still be on their rookie deal
Ronnie Stanley's on his 5th year option of his rookie deal
Bradley Bozeman's on year 3 of his rookie deal
Skura's deal you could quibble about because he's been tendered as a RFA (but he's RFA because he's in year 4 of being a UDFA)
Ben Powers is on year 2 of his rookie deal
Orlando Brown is on year 3 of his rookie deal
Patrick Mekari is on year 2 of his rookie deal
Tyre Phillips is on year 1 of his rookie deal
Ben Bredeson is on year 1 of his rookie deal
there's a high chance all 8 of those guys make it
DJ Fluker is the only wildcard who breaks up this possibility
