Salary cap inflation? Presumably they can build better team around him if his pay doesn't go up with cap increases.
Sure that's true, but my initial argument still stands. Even if the cap increases by 20 mil in the next two years what additional money would that add to the deal mahomes signed? I'd argue maybe 1-2 mil/year

True. I think it will rise more but you're right - numbers don't match.
Details in this thread, pretty damn unique stuff

The contract doesn't look as good for Mahomes as I thought I would. Only a 10m signing bonus? No termination option. The Chiefs can get out of it in 2025 or 26 (~40 deadcap).

I feel like pat is the best situation any football player could have been in. Its also probably gonna be a few reconstructures so he will get even more of that money earlier than expected. I think 2027 he is due 59 million got dam no wonder you said 2026 lol. Shit by then he wouldve probably made an extra 100 million in incentives lol

So what is the plus side for the chiefs in this deal. I don't understand. It's not like mahomes wouldn't sign a 10 year 50 mil/yr fully guaranteed deal two years from now even if he manages to win two more superbowls. They are just taking on two years of injury risk. The only QB who could set the market and raise the QB rate between now and then is Dak, and he's definitely not making much more than 40,if that.

chiefs get 12 years of control on a QB at a price set in 2020... the deal they made today governs his price until 2032 - that's amazing value because in 2 years that probably isnt even the highest avg/yr deal and in 3-4 years it might not even be in the top 5 avg/yr

for the chiefs its a no brainer

for mahomes it doesnt make a huge amount of sense - when he signed for that length i assumed there'd be salary cap escalators but there arent which is really surprising

Who do you envision having a higher average per year deal in two years? We can say Lamar and Watson sure but the way Mahomes has played he's going to set the bar for QBs as it'll be difficult for either of them to play better and justify a larger payday.

I mean the man is still gonna make almost half a billion dollars. The per year average doesn’t really matter at that point
Agreed. 140 guaranteed if injury also. Nobody else in nfl will get this type of contract. Maybe if Arod was 24 and had won a Sb and mvp already.

that's not how the market works though... the next guy to get paid gets the most... deshaun will now be using mahomes's average to justify his money and maybe he doesnt get that deal this year but maybe he waits a year and gets it next offseason

if lamar has another season like he did last year then he's gonna get that much money if not more

Under normal circumstances where the next guy makes 1-2 mil more sure, but mahomes completely blew the top off the market. I doubt anyone tops him anytime soon. But we'll see. This is surely an unprecedented contract

i had wondered if this would happen ever since we saw the terms of the new CBA before they voted it in - part of the tradeoff for all the new money and increase in minimum salaries involved massive decreases in disability benefit post-career which possibly eventually affects more former players than there are players currently in the league... of course there was going to be blowback

Why would they - both the NFL and especially NFLPA - be allowed to break the agreement signed with former players? They don't get anything from the tradeoff.
