The 2021 Offseason Thread

Hall of Famer
I think he's played well enough to be our starter but not amazing enough that he couldn't be usurped by a high quality addition

that being said he might have had his best game yet against the bills from what ive seen - one of my biggest criticisms of him especially as a deep cover guy is that he's hesitant to trigger and it often makes him seem late or slow but when he backs his reads he's got tons of range

there was one spectacular play he made in coverage early against the bills where he started at the LoS between the Edge and Slot on the far side and at the snap absolutely screams downfield to bracket diggs over the top on a go route lined up outside with Marcus Peters on the near side

so he came from the LoS and from the opposite side of the field to get over the top to completely nullify that play

he's got that kind of upside

and we all know what he can do in the running game with the way he comes downhill like a rocket

and i love the way he holds himself and how hyped and swaggery he gets

I think we need to add another safety anyway so that we can get into more 3 safety dime packages again - even if we did add a starting level safety, deshon's going to be a big part of this defence in 2021 - the real question for me is what we do about him after 2021 given he'll be a free agent after this upcoming season
have you watched trevon moehrig yet?

Us developing wrs isnt the problem imo, its our drafting choice. I feel we are better off drafting nfl ready wrs outta college or wrs who already have those nfl traits. Id rather us go strictly for good rte runners who can catch.

You look at the best wrs in nfl, all those guys run exceptional rtes and its been that way for them even before nfl. Most of them put in the work during spare time. Regardless of who their coaches are ,those guys will be good. Now, they may not be used correctly due to coaching or bad qb play but regardless of it you know those guys have skill.

Hollywood has game, he may never reach his full potential here because of qb play and coaching but the teams and coaches who actually got an eye for wr talent will use him correctly.

Only trouble is those pro ready receivers you’re talking about usually don’t last anywhere near where we draft

havent got to collins or st brown yet

really like bateman a lot

not a massive fan of marshall so far
ive only watched a little of collins but he looks like hes got so much to work with, st brown is just a dog and a route runner and an athlete and a natural receiver.

what dont you like about marshall?

Corey Davis would be marginally better than Boykin on this team, let’s be real

Man i love bateman.. havent really looked deep into him yet but from what i saw last season he was look really good. Didnt see much of him this season but is he projected to go in 1st rnd?
agree, totally love Bateman. I mean the guys a fantastic route runner and wins at the catch point and he has decent size at 6'2 210. Anyway, he plays like a Raven and attacks the football. Eric, get it done!

He doesn’t play the same position. One is a NT and the other is different.
You don’t think Justin could play NT if he put on a few more pounds? I think his designated position is RE but why couldn’t you have him, Calais and Wolfe on the field at the same time?

here are my current notes on marshall:

- Shows good ball-tracking and hands downfield as well as in traffic and vs double-coverage – has made some very impressive catches – had some drops in 2020 though – but he’s consistently coming back to and attacking the ball in the air

- Runs a ton of slants – is pretty effective on them although I saw defenders close on them really well at times (not a particularly nuanced route runner) but he still wins on those routes despite the predictability

- He’s got some speed – not a burner but looks to be enough speed to challenge DBs but he’s not particularly elusive with ball in hand but will run away from some DBs after the catch

- Length and quickness to create problems but doesn't actually win enough for me on tape despite those qualities

- Route running is not sharp at all and route tree seems limited – will hand-fight up the stem

- Aligned both outside and in the slot in 2020

I suppose I should revise what i said - i don't dislike Marshall but i dont feel confident in him - he's super raw I think and I worry about the complete lack of route tree and route running and I wonder how often he's schemed open

I think if he puts on the typical pounds to play NT you may lose some of what makes him so great. I like him as a rotational piece opposite of and behind Campbell to eventually replace him.

I understand. But that 7 something million is nice savings for a guy who only does one thing

we don't want to do that to him. We can get a nose tackle, but there aren't many Madubuike's that come out of the draft that often.

Oh I know, we could certainly use it elsewhere but I also don’t want to just get rid of a guy to save money if there isn’t someone to replace him. I guess it depends on a lot of different factors. Would the team even want to move him? Would he be effective? Who would replace Williams if not Madubuike?

Amen at some point we gotta accept it and just draft those guys.
Agreed. Hollywood has been almost as good as we could’ve ever expected in this offense upon drafting him, but he’s not “the” guy and likely never will be due to his size and nature.

I’m really liking Bateman, Marshall, st brown, and nico Collins for us.

there’s also a guy Jaelen Dardon who’s like Hollywood’s size but he’s a tough sob and he’s not as fast but wayyy twitchier, like a Lamar running style, he’s just a guy I’d love to see here breaking ankles
Jaelon Darden wow. I just started to watch him today. Love his mindset, tough sob, his steps and acceleration are like a sewing machine. I hope I find enough tape. Unfortunately he's probably not what we need in our wr room unless we make some moves in FA.

a

ridley did
One exception to the rule

not just ridley either lol

in 2020:
Tee Higgins was available when we picked Queen (and is reported to have been the "other option" when we made the pick)
Michael Pittman was available at 28 too
Denzel Mims was available at 55
Van Jefferson was available at 55
Gabriel Davis was available at any of our picks in the 3rd round

in 2019:
we got Hollywood at 25 (i still think it's a good pick)
at 25 we could also have got AJ Brown, DK Metcalf, Diontae Johnson, Terry McLaurin

now tbf we didn't have a 2nd round pick and none of these guys lasted to our pick in the 3rd round

in 2018:
we could have got Calvin Ridley at 25 (or Courtland Sutton - although i understand why we didn't go after him given his drop problems in college)
we took andrews at 86 but we traded back to that spot twice - we could have had Michael Gallup at either 65 or 75 (he went at 81)

in 2017:
Juju and Cooper Kupp were both available at 47
Chris Godwin and Kenny Golladay were both available at both of our 3rd round picks

every year there are guys we could take especially in the 2nd round but we just havent really tried to draft receivers high except for Hollywood recently

I do think he’s raw, but I felt he was a fairly sharp route runner, as far as change of direction and suddenness, he doesn’t labor too hard to redirect his momentum and he’s got impressively quick feet considering his size and strength.

Idk I feel like LSUs qb situation may have had as much or more to do with his route tree, and I just feel like I’m seeing tools that could be easily coached up with some elite ability that can just be difficult to find.

I understand though, he’s the biggest question mark of the early group of wrs
