I intentionally stayed off the boards for a few days to let the emotional aspect dissipate, and it has.
Couple things I saw from the post-game thread that I thought were interesting:
1. How do we fix the passing game and develop a more balanced offense? Well, there's a few things to point out...
We could argue all day long about whether its coaching or not. Some say its 100% Roman or Harbaugh's fault, others think they're doing great.
Who wants to stand up and say that the WR core and offensive line is at a SB level? I've not seen somebody mention it yet. I'd like to hear somebody make that argument.
I think you need to seriously look at getting a new Center, and I think for like the 50th time in Ravens history, you need to look at largely overhauling the WR room. Brown stays obviously, but you can't run it back with Boykin and Snead and Bryant and think you're in good shape.
So, for starters, you need upgraded personnel in some spots. With or without a different coaching staff, I don't see that changing. You could resurrect the greatness of Bill Walsh and he's not making this receiving core look great.
2. An extension for Lamar has been brought up already. I saw somebody point out on the post-game thread about Lamar being "hamstrung" in this offense, especially in the passing game. Seemingly unable to audible, very simplistic pass-game concepts, throwing outside the numbers, etc.
There is no chance in hell I'm even discussing terms of a long term contract with Lamar until I've seen improvement in those areas. I can't even fathom handing out $30-35M+ a year to a guy who basically has no control over the passing game. I don't expect a Mahomes or Brady like command of an offense, where they seemingly have carte-blanche to do whatever they want. But its (painfully at times) obvious that he's being babied along in the passing game in this offense. You can't shell out that kind of cash for that kind of output.
I don't expect him to be a 5,000 yard passer. And I don't care where the Ravens "rank" in passing yard/game. I care about whether defenses are afraid enough of our passing game that they can't figure out how to stop either side without taking major risks.
And right now, they're not.
They want to give him like a 1-2 year extension off his 4 year rookie deal, so be it. I'm not even considering some massive 5-6 year extension. I really don't care if its "cheaper" or not. I'll gladly pay $5-10M a year more 2-3 years from now if he improves dramatically in the passing game. No reservations there.
The reservations are if you start handing out $35M a year to this player based on how he's played. It'll be hard to be better than what we are, because that's like $25M a year less to pay other players.
