The 2021 Offseason Thread

not just ridley either lol

in 2020:
Tee Higgins was available when we picked Queen (and is reported to have been the "other option" when we made the pick)
Michael Pittman was available at 28 too
Denzel Mims was available at 55
Van Jefferson was available at 55
Gabriel Davis was available at any of our picks in the 3rd round

in 2019:
we got Hollywood at 25 (i still think it's a good pick)
at 25 we could also have got AJ Brown, DK Metcalf, Diontae Johnson, Terry McLaurin

now tbf we didn't have a 2nd round pick and none of these guys lasted to our pick in the 3rd round

in 2018:
we could have got Calvin Ridley at 25 (or Courtland Sutton - although i understand why we didn't go after him given his drop problems in college)
we took andrews at 86 but we traded back to that spot twice - we could have had Michael Gallup at either 65 or 75 (he went at 81)

in 2017:
Juju and Cooper Kupp were both available at 47
Chris Godwin and Kenny Golladay were both available at both of our 3rd round picks

every year there are guys we could take especially in the 2nd round but we just havent really tried to draft receivers high except for Hollywood recently
Not gonna lie, i really dislike dk. Super stiff and route running is terrible. I loved van jefferson though.. thought he would be perfect for us.... and got dam how do you remember all that

I intentionally stayed off the boards for a few days to let the emotional aspect dissipate, and it has.

Couple things I saw from the post-game thread that I thought were interesting:

1. How do we fix the passing game and develop a more balanced offense? Well, there's a few things to point out...
We could argue all day long about whether its coaching or not. Some say its 100% Roman or Harbaugh's fault, others think they're doing great.
Who wants to stand up and say that the WR core and offensive line is at a SB level? I've not seen somebody mention it yet. I'd like to hear somebody make that argument.
I think you need to seriously look at getting a new Center, and I think for like the 50th time in Ravens history, you need to look at largely overhauling the WR room. Brown stays obviously, but you can't run it back with Boykin and Snead and Bryant and think you're in good shape.
So, for starters, you need upgraded personnel in some spots. With or without a different coaching staff, I don't see that changing. You could resurrect the greatness of Bill Walsh and he's not making this receiving core look great.

2. An extension for Lamar has been brought up already. I saw somebody point out on the post-game thread about Lamar being "hamstrung" in this offense, especially in the passing game. Seemingly unable to audible, very simplistic pass-game concepts, throwing outside the numbers, etc.

There is no chance in hell I'm even discussing terms of a long term contract with Lamar until I've seen improvement in those areas. I can't even fathom handing out $30-35M+ a year to a guy who basically has no control over the passing game. I don't expect a Mahomes or Brady like command of an offense, where they seemingly have carte-blanche to do whatever they want. But its (painfully at times) obvious that he's being babied along in the passing game in this offense. You can't shell out that kind of cash for that kind of output.

I don't expect him to be a 5,000 yard passer. And I don't care where the Ravens "rank" in passing yard/game. I care about whether defenses are afraid enough of our passing game that they can't figure out how to stop either side without taking major risks.

And right now, they're not.

They want to give him like a 1-2 year extension off his 4 year rookie deal, so be it. I'm not even considering some massive 5-6 year extension. I really don't care if its "cheaper" or not. I'll gladly pay $5-10M a year more 2-3 years from now if he improves dramatically in the passing game. No reservations there.

The reservations are if you start handing out $35M a year to this player based on how he's played. It'll be hard to be better than what we are, because that's like $25M a year less to pay other players.

haha lo

DK was a guy i agree with you about - he looked stiff to me on his college tape and i was worried about that but he's been absolutely phenomenal in the NFL - dominant, destroys physical press man coverage - at times he's been un-coverable

has had a few important drops (and the important fumble against the ravens in 2019) but otherwise you couldn't really ask for a better translation from college to teh NFL

Hey man did you read the posts or skim? A lot of people said we need a new C and that our WR corps needs a serious overhaul. That actually is in fact the consensus along with people questioning how much those WR additions would help if Roman either doesn’t involve them or uses them in a vanilla passing attack.

Metcalf is a soft little girl. What’s gonna happen when that speed goes away

i believe i was one of a few that liked him enough to take him in the first and proved it with my forum mock pick! Yes he is stiff but he was a physical nightmare in college and as you said, impossible to press. Put him in the right situation with the right routes and he would be a stud and boy is he in the right situation.

Everyone knew it was coming but damn I’m gonna miss Mark. I hope he just retires

ooft - we just missed on this one lol - put too much stock in his stiffness and maybe I personally got swayed by the lack of production and overlooked how dominant he was vs press and how he looked every bit of the 4.3 he tested as on film

got fixated on the “what you can’t do” rather than the “what you can do” - it’s one of the reasons why last year I kind of changed my approach and started focusing on how prospects “win” and how well that will translate and then worry about scheme/fit after rather than starting with what’s missing or what they won’t be

But see he literally only wins cause of the 4.3 and physical size. Dont mean to say it as a bad thing but do we really see dk getting much better? i also believe he has to be a certain scheme for him to excel..

thats actually my problem lol... i want guys who can fit any where and play in any scheme.. thats like the first thing i think of. Once they get there, thats when i see what they good at and if it will work.

not sure Dk needs to get much better - he’s put up 2300 yds in his first 2 seasons

and in terms of evaluating and finding schemeless guys - that’s fine but seems pretty pointless to me - there’s no such thing as a schemeless offence (Ravens 2020 passing attack tried its best though tbf lol)

if you know you’re offence requires certain things or focuses on certain things - why do you need a prospect who fits in someone else’s scheme too?

Yes I saw. My point was that, regardless of what you think about the coaching staff, it's going to be borderline impossible to argue that we will grow without upgrades at Center and WR. You can fire Roman and Harbaugh and anybody else you want, and it won't matter.

first I’ve heard of the Jesse minter interview

and he didn’t even mention David culley in that tweet lol
Maybe its just me, but somehow, I would think being a DB coach at the pro-level would be better than being the DC at a school like Vanderbilt.

Like Michigan I get. But Vanderbilt is never going to be a quality NCAA football program. It almost feels like taking a step back.

I seem to remember Wink essentially saying he's not interested in moving last year, which might be putting teams off. And Roman not getting interviews makes total sense to me; you can't run his scheme without a very mobile quarterback so who else would want him realistically?

Minter had been DC at Georgia State. I mean if you like getting blown the f*** out everytime you play SEC opponents, then it's the right step.

I mean I can't imagine the pay is much better. I suppose being a DC at Vanderbilt would be a better opportunity to getting you a HC job in the NCAA, but like, how are you ever going to get noticed being the DC in Vanderbilt?

Like realistically, if he coached DBs here for a few more years, he could get calls for a DC job on somebodies staff in the Pros. Unless he like went to Vanderbilt or something, I don't get the point.

Ok I mean I don’t think anyone thinks or hope nobody thinks that firing Roman or making any coaching change magically improves our players from not executing well. I couldn’t agree more that we need major help at WR & C regardless of who coaches us. I just think others have said the same thing and thought your comment saying otherwise was wrong. Other than that I think you’re spot on.

My guess would be either he went there or maybe one of his kids is going there?
