The 2021 Offseason Thread

I'm assuming at least one of these meetings involved Watson and Culley talking to him trying to convince him to stay, etc. Otherwise, these are a lot of meetings lol. It's funny though, he joined with the Chiefs in 2013 as their WR coach. The next season in 2014, the 2014 Chiefs became the first team with ZERO TOUCHDOWNS from Wide Receivers since 1964. I'll be happy for him to be getting this opportunity but damn like his credentials are.... meh.

probably contract related discussions and staffing because they're so late to the party with the HC they need to be fairly quick if they want to assemble a good staff

i mean if you go back to his time at the eagles his credentials are pretty great - he was there when desean jackson emerged as a game-wrecking talent and he was well-loved at the chiefs lol

I thought this was kind of a dumb rule when they announced it. But now that it benefits us, it's great :D

i mean i get the rationale behind it - but it'll take a while to see if it actually works (will need time for the incentive to kick in for teams to start promoting from within to cultivate those candidates who might garner them comp picks)

so we'll see what the impact is short-term but if the NFL really wants to see if this will work they'll have to stick with it at least in the medium-term

I just find it funny how every minority Head Coach that was being propped up by the media: Bieniemy, Caldwell, Frazier, and others yet the one minority Head Coach nobody talked about or thought about is the one with the Head Coaching job.

i mean Saleh was the number 1 hyped candidate around the league... was first to get hired - also a minority

also every single one of the "final 4" if you will on the Texans was a minority coach - Eric Bieniemy (although probably wasn't ever actually in contention), Jim Caldwell, Leslie Frazier and David Culley...

He's such an interesting case, but more teams went against the offensive grain this season that we've seen in years past. Lots of leadership qualities (Saleh, Staley, Campbell, Culley) than these young offensive play callers. Whether some of those guys will be good or not remains to be seen, but it's definitely different. Teams definitely went outside of the box (with the exception of Saleh).

Saleh and Cullen sure fit the leadership type - saleh obviously also brings his defensive coordinator skills with him - i do find it interesting that Culley is supposedly leaving the existing OC in place so probably won't even be calling plays as a HC either lol
idk what Dan Campbell is lol - he seems to come from the Joe Judge on crack school of leadership

Staley fits the grain in the sense that he's the new fancy young kid on the block with the next big thing in terms of scheme - just happens to be that he's the "Mcvay of defence"

Helps us stay put if we feel we have to. Still think DeCosta would like to add a couple more picks but the pressure isn't there to move back now.

we'll basically be back to a full suite of picks this year which is still less than normal but the added value of the 3rd rounder is a big boon - we were all thinking about 2 starters and miscellaneous depth in the draft this year - well now that 3rd comp creates the opportunity to add another value talent (maybe an early contributor or maybe a high upside guy) who's falling

and just in general more picks = more ammo to move around the board in either direction

ive no idea what the depth of the draft looks like overall yet - it's possible that the comp 3 is basically a day 3 pick in terms of the players you're getting there (but then it still has value if you can trade out of that pick and stock up on day 3 picks)

This was a really good thread. Not sure there’s a team out there that needs more work on culture than the Texans. For that reason, I can see why they went Culley based on the reports on his character. They have much bigger problems than just on field stuff.

the problem is the 2 biggest cancers in the organisation might be the owner and the guy who hired his boss...
it'll be a testament to his prowess if he pulls this off

but i think for the texans sake point 3 in that thread is probably the most important and probably why andy reid and harbs have both been massive advocates for him

Going with the opposite of BOB too. Can’t imagine how all of those explosive personalities meshed on a day to day basis. Culley and Caserio could be the calming presences needed instead of all of these alpha types.

He's quickly filling up his staff too. Former QB Josh McCown is joining the team in some capacity, Lovie Smith may return to the NFL as the new Defensive Coordinator. Offensive Coordinator Tim Kelly is staying on board and now all eyes on Watson. Does he still want out after this? Will he stay? Bringing in Lovie Smith means switching to the Tampa 2 defense and I don't think they have anyone currently on their roster who fits that scheme. It's going to be interesting how it works out for him, most Texans fans on the forums think this is a set up for Josh McCown to eventually take over.

With that said, how do we replace him?

Anyone know how much say Culley actually had as our pass game coordinator? If he had a lot of pull, him leaving is a good thing isn’t it? Hopefully we can replace him with a young, innovative mind

Roman probably takes control of the passing game as well now knowing Harbaugh.

I’m happy for Culley. It’s nice to see a guy who’s been in the industry as long as him get rewarded with a head coaching job. It’s in a tough situation though and I’m hoping he does well.

I also read that Culley and Watson met at last years pro bowl and hit it off. That could help the Texans.
