The 2021 Offseason Thread

So this offseason, provided Orlando stays, we need:

1 iOL
1 OT
1 WR
3 Pass rushers
1 Safety

Do we think we can realistically hit all those needs? My prediction based on EDC comments and Jeff Z's tweets, we might in FA do something like resign Bowser and sign Thuney.

That leaves us with still needing a tackle, a receiver, 2 pass rushers, and a safety. And thats all bare minimum.
Well we usually go into an offseason with a pretty similar list of needs, and we rarely get everything we need. That's just the nature of the beast. One of two of these positions will either get moderate upgrades in the draft, or may not be addressed at all.

hard to say IOL vs pass rush - there's a ton of OL (lots of tackles) and some high quality IOL too so i'd err towards OL being easier to address in this class

but EDGE is a mess of different opinions which makes it more likely that a guy we really like could fall - but also looks like there's a lot of EDGE guys in this class - lots of potential busts too (a ton of athletes who're ridiculously raw)
Come to think of it, I'm still going with Watt as my #2 SIIE target. I trust Joe D's body of work but that doesn't mean don't draft an OL in the early rounds if the opportunity presents itself.

And you're totally right about that. But don't you think that this next year is maybe one of the most important for the near future of the Ravens. Lamar certainly won't be on a rookie deal in 2 years. He might not even be next year. We got our first playoff win. Seems like the time to make a push.

it's very possible we can find a reasonably priced vet safety in free agency or a cap casualty type guy - not a "high value" position and the safety market seems to have been depressed (at least for non-stars) in recent years - so it may well be that we can find someone reasonable with some experience to fill in that 3rd safety roll for a year or so

Honestly wouldn’t be shocked if that’s the type of guy we try to get as a throw in for an OBJ trade. ST guy with at least some defensive capability

chuck's great at what he does
deshon's good at what he does

neither are special but both are absolutely fine and very cheep

if a better player comes available at a lower price then i'd happily add them but chuck and deshon are good fits in this defence and have played well - we could certainly improve the position and it's possibly going to be a need next year anyway given deshon's in a contract year - but i wouldn't say that they are bad players

not even necessarily a special teamer - but a proven vet like tashaun gipson or dj swearinger or a younger guy like Keanu Neal (maybe looking to revamp his career) who clearly have talent

we're not short of special teamers here that we can afford to have our 3rd safety not play on special teams especially given the fact that in a pinch both our starting safeties are excellent special teamers

They’re both fine but if we could I’d replace Deshon before Clark. Chuck is good and I like Deshon but he’s a bit too Pollard for my taste. I’d like a better coverage guy back there and Clark can handle that but we’re missing a second dude.

Pretty much this sums it up on Clark and Deshon. I think we will be living true to our name and picking and dead castaways who were cut. That’s where we’re going to be making our money in FA this year at all our positions of need IMHO.
If it's financially feasible then yes - we need starters and depth. Easton played a couple of preseason games here before we traded him
He’s not a bad option and it would be very DeCosta to sign him lol.

i guess also but - like what's the point of paying a ton of money for a safety? guys like kenny vaccaro are getting paid more money than chuck - the top guys in the league are getting paid nearly 3 times as much as chuck - it just feels like it's the running back of the defence in terms of value (albeit you aren't expecting your safeties to fall of a cliff) - there seems to be very little point paying a ton of money for a safety when you could pay a corner instead

especially as we haven't really been struggling recently to find decent safety play either through late draft picks or through veteran signings

paying earl thomas nearly 14m/yr seems like a massive waste even if it had worked out - we're paying marcus peters 14m/yr....

I was looking at a guy like Andrew Wingard in JAX if they were to make the trade, for whatever that's worth. Not a pure starter but he's definitely played a combo of D and ST there and could be a good sweetener that I don't think they'd balk at.

i just think there's going to be so many guys released/cut that there's likely going to be better options that won't cost picks... even the guys i mentioned above would impact the comp pick formula so probably wont be worth it (at least until after the comp pick deadline)

I don’t wanna rehash an old vet at safety again. I’ll take it on the OL or even with a WR but idk I just think it’s the wrong route for us to get older or slower in the secondary by choice

That’s a thought for sure, harbaugh LOVES him a dimebacker/SS/ST ace. I’d go as far to say i think Anthony Levine might be harbaughs favorite raven ever lol
