Understood, but i still dont think our safties are good and even though theyre home grown, neither does anything spectacular. Imo we still need atleast one more S. averett would not start for another team right now at all literally, however he does look a little better since we first saw him..jimmy has always been good vs run and even before he moved to that role, almost everyone here knew it would happen because he showed the ability to do so with his style of play..

Im taking anything at all from hewitt and i always believed we have the best coaches in all of land but for me to give him the credit that youre giving him, im gonna have to see someone like averett or elliot turn into potential starters for other teams.

i mean averett would start on a lot of teams... as would chuck clark - you could argue elliott might not which is fair but averett likely starts elsewhere (he'd be starting for us if we didn't have 2 all-pros at outside corner) or if he could play in the slot

and it's not just me giving him that credit - he was on Schrager's list of outside the box up-and-coming coaches during the hiring period... the jags interviewed him as well as cullen for their DC role (and he was promoted in 2020 to pass game coordinator)

The thing is that they are good lol you just dislike them because it’s not your preference of skill set. The single high ball hawk is a dying breed and safeties who can wear multiple hats is the trend and they both do that pretty well, Clark especially

if you want to be a true single-high free safety in the league you have to have outrageous range because WRs are quicker and so are QBs which massively quickens the reaction time to close on the ball and range over

jessie bates probably the best current example in the NFL i think

but those guys are rarer and rarer in college - seeing a ton more guys who're position versatile and become matchup guys vs true single position safeties

This is also true lol. Clark is decent, he plays his role well but everytime i watch our game, i wonder where tf is our safeties.they play the run good and know our defense but with the cbs we have, they should be out there making plays. our cbs are so good i just feel like if we had better safties, our defense would be much better than it already is.

maybe im too hard on them lol, atleast they arent like sorenson from Kc

Hewitt is good but i dnt think he deserves the
Credit for peters, jimmy, hump and tavon. I cant give him credit for how they play. If anything, having those guys has greatly increased his knowledge of the game.

Well our scheme is not friendly to safeties at all, and again talent at the position is weak across the league and the ravens genuinely have one of the better safety tandems

they’re not playmakers in the sense that they’re not gonna get a ton of turnovers - and I’m not suggesting they’re both irreplaceable

just that given the way we use safeties in our scheme they’re pretty good fits - id like to see deshon be more decisive when he’s playing high because he’s got the speed if he trusts himself - but both of them are asked to do a lot at the LoS

and while they didn’t make a ton of plays deep in coverage they weren’t victimised in man coverage the way a fair few safeties in our recent past have been

best safety tandem weve had(other than clark and ET) since reed and pollard.

Love that. Winks defense was sparked when we drafted Humphrey, we decided to build around him, and he’s responded like an elite player should, and on top of that added a whole other factor with the punch and spread that to the whole team(for better or worse lol). He’s the defensive cornerstone right now, there really isn’t anyone else in the conversation with him there.
We drafted Hump when Pees was still DC, but we definitely built around him, without question. He doesn't get the accolades he deserves.

In today's NFL I'm not sure you're even going to need a CF type of S. Cover 1/3 imo aren't the primary coverages you should play to stop the top offenses. Those S just have to cover too much ground. Chiefs, Bucs, Bills are going to take advantage of this all day. Cover 2/4.. create 2 vs.1 match-ups and minimize deep shots/explosive plays and if the S don't sit too deep they can even help to stop the run.

Hopefully we can get that this year. Gonna be tough but afc isnt that strong anymore
I disagree because I think AFC is gonna be a dogfight. Mahomes, Allen, Baker, Watson (assuming he stays in the AFC), Herbert, Burrow if they can get him a competent o-line, Sunshine, (MAYBE) Fields and/or Wilson. I think Wentz will show shades of his 2017/18 self and the Titans will stay a playoff contender.

Maybe in the future but all afc really have thats a threat is kc, ravens, bills and browns. Didnt include steelers cause big ben is still there lol.. nfc has way more power houses. Packers, saints, rams, bucs and niners and hawks. Our chances of having a better record after 3yrs is much easier than the packers and hawks

the NFC is way less competitive than the AFC right now though - it was last year too - 2 of the 6 teams you named are gonna have new QBs this season and a 3rd one should have a new one

the NFC field was so lacklustre that a 7 win team hosted a playoff game and an 8 win team made it as a wildcard...

conversely 10 wins in the AFC didn't even get you the 7th seed...

Let's assume Brees retires. Deebo, I was going to disagree with you. But then I quickly realized that they have a QB in Taysom Hill who's infinitely better than Lamar so they should still be in the convo for NFC Super Bowl contenders.

Lmao.i think brees is staying.. i believe saints, packers, bucs, rams and hawks wouldve ran through afc playoffs other than kc. We could likely beat hawks but thats it. Bills maybe also beaten hawks but thats it.

That’s an interesting argument. With the exception of the packers, I don’t think any of those teams beat the Ravens. Brees can’t push the ball down field making Peters and Humphrey much more dangerous. Goff most definitely can not beat our secondary and they won’t be able to run on us to establish play action. Hawks couldn’t protect wilson all year and are shaky at best in their run game. The Bucs are dangerous but also a good match up for us. their D line would have given us fits but Lamar excels when the play breaks down. Those Dlinemen would be exhausted chasing him around vice their super bowl vs a limping Mahomes.
