2021 General Draft Thoughts

This is totally random but Mac Jones full name is Michael McCorkle Jones. Of all the Middle names his parents can choose, they chose McCorkle. Also why do people think he is going to go in the top 10? I get QBs are taken higher than they should now a days but I always had him drafted in the 20's to a team like the Colts, Saints or Steelers. Yeah I get Matt Rhule coached him at the Senior Bowl and people compare it to how Dave Gettleman took one look at Daniel Jones in the Senior Bowl and said that's my guy but I can't see that happening unless Carolina trades down.

Hopefully some of these QB prospects have good workouts so other talented guys can drop within trade range or to us at 27. We've been lucky since 2017 to have some great QB classes five straight years including this year.

2017 - Watson, Mahomes and Trubisky has done alright I guess. I mean who else has won a NVP award.
2018 - Baker, Allen, Lamar.
2019 - I guess looking back we hit a snag with Daniel Jones and Haskins but Murray seems he'll be alright.
2020 - Joe Burrow forbid the Bengals treat him like Luck and give him no offensive line help. Herbert played well, jury is out on Tua. Maybe Jalen Hurts surprises people if he starts for the Eagles. Who knows about Jordan Love and if he'll ever see the field in Green Bay.
2021- Trevor, Fields and Wilson seem to be locks to be the good ones in this class. Everyone else with the right coaching could be developed into starters.

Beyond this year, it seems the QB market isn't there draft wise. If we can't land Linsley from Green Bay, hopefully we can snag Humphrey from Oklahoma.

Jones doesn’t have your prototypical physical gifts. Arm isn’t super great. Mobility is alright. But he has mental processing that’s well ahead of most. He has a great understanding of the game and how to read defenses. That’s why he’s being lumped in. Might not ever be a superstar but feel like he’s a good bet to be a solid starter

i think the other thing regarding him going high is...

is he worse than Tua who went 5th overall after a hip injury last year? obviously that's not in a vacuum - the 2020 class didn't have a ton of QB talent and the 2021 class seems to have lots of QB options

but there's an argument to be made he's as good a prospect as Tua was coming out but i do think he might struggle if he goes high because im not sure he has the toolkit to elevate a bad roster in the way that some of the others might (but conversely he might be the best placed to have a great rookie year if he lands with a good roster - i know the colts traded for Wentz but I really think Mac Jones would have been really interesting on that roster)

Anyone know what round elijah moore is projected to go in? Other than batesman he is the only other guy ive been watching. Would love him on the team but him and hollywood small asses wouldnt be good for our run game

i really like elijah moore - my guess is he's going somewhere in round 2 and i think that would be great value for him - i think there's a chance he sneaks into the backend of the first round but it's more likely that's another receiver

yes he's small but he doesn't play small - i havent got any notes on his blocking but i've got notes about him motioning a ton pre-snap (something we do with our slots a lot), i've got notes about how physical he is in other areas of the game (makes contested catches, takes shots going over the middle, gets yards after contact despite taking shots)

my recollection is that he's not a high effort blocker but he's supremely competitive so my guess is he'll do it if it gets him on the field in the NFL

if you're looking for a competitive dude to watch out of the slot (hyper-competitive and physical as a blocker among other things) then have a look at amon-ra st brown and see what you think if you haven't watched him already

Amon-Ra really reminds me of SSS in his play style and hyper competitiveness. I would love having him on the team just for the attitude he would bring to our offense. Especially if he also lights a fire in Hollywood like SSS did to Torrey.

There's an absolute ton of talent in day 2 in this class - and naturally it's gonna filter into the early parts of day 3 - an extra pick or 2 in the 4th round could be really useful
We can’t have an an optimally strong draft without adding 2 picks on day 2, the value just won’t be there at any point for it to feel like a strong draft if we are breezing past day 2 with 2 picks total

i think im very much team trade down right now - would have to be a bona fide prime 1st round talent on the board for me not to want to trade down from 27 right now - someone like Bateman, Vera-Tucker, Ojulari... someone of that ilk and idk how likely that is

on my board right now i've only got 22 1st round graded players in total (4 of those are QBs) - it's possible one of those guys makes it to 27 but not exceedingly likely

conversely i have 5 of those 22 graded specifically as late 1st rounders... and another 17 guys graded in that early 2nd round range... there's going to be tons of value at the top of the 2nd round - and hopefully the opportunity to add an extra pick or 2

especially as that early 2nd round range looks like it could be absolutely loaded with talent at WR and on the OL specifically

Just did a mock gen as if we traded brown to the jags for 25 and 45. I ended up with:

azeez ojulari
Teven Jenkins
Creed Humphrey(doubtful here)
Amon ra st brown
Patrick Jones(also doubtful)
Cameron sample
Kary Vincent jr
Shi smith
Tamorrion terry

whoa

this would be pretty close to the best possible imaginable outcome lol

i dont think it's unrealistic that all those guys are available when you've taken them - but i think it's unrealistic that they all WOULD be there in 1 class lol

Yeah that’s literally the best thing that could happen to the ravens lol, I mean the draft is still a crap shoot, but on paper this would be beautiful

Ojulari: explosive, bendy edge rusher with massive potential (and potential in coverage too)
Jenkins: possibly the best candidate in the class to play RT in this offence
Humphrey: a fundamentally sound C who's highly intelligent and awesome in pass pro and a day 1 starter
St Brown: hyper-competitive WR with some route-running ability and good athleticism out of the slot
Jones II: a fast and powerful edge rusher who's not an elite bender but is otherwise dynamic and who could do with adding some more weight to his frame but very exciting tape
Cam Sample: i haven't done any tape study on but he looked good at the senior bowl and i've heard good things
Vincent Jr: one of my favourite hybrid defensive backs who plays slot but has the versatility to play single high
Smith: quick slot who runs nice routes
Terry: massive upside outside WR

all guys i like, all hit valuable positions, a nice mix of high floors and high upsides

and now i have to forget you showed it to me because i dont want unrealistic expectations lol

Even better though, the Jones pick was between him and alim McNeil, a big body DT I really like. And then the sample pick, it was between him and daelin hayes.

sample is an extremely powerful and twitchy short and stocky edge, he’s built like a DL but plays all over their front and mostly at edge, he looks like an absolute man among boys at his small school, but very physically impressive and plays violently and is great with his hands. Probably would be a guy who gets a lot of looks at 3 and 5 and would be a great candidate to standup rush the 1/0 in our more exotic looks

I really liked McNeill - a squat and stout 0t who did well vs double teams and destroyed centers 1v1 and has some upside as a pass rusher
i'd probably have taken jones too but would not have quibbled with mcneill either

will have to bump sample up my list to watch

at this point im very much team trade down (i normally am lol but even moreso this year)

i dont think there's going to be a major talent that i would want at 27 more than extra picks and I've got a ton of OL, WR and DB talent with 2nd round grades (early and otherwise)

i'd love a trade down and maybe pick up one of the tackles who didn't get taken in round 1, or Wyatt Davis or one of the receivers or depending on who's around maybe even one of the DBs or EDGEs

i just think there's going to be a sweet spot for talent but at 27 we might be right on the cusp of running out of guys with 1st round grades on our board (just like the Perriman year) and so the better value is going to come from trading down

I want to pick at 27 if it’s: teven Jenkins, rashod Bateman, or azeez ojulari, not really interested in many other guys in that area of the draft, and 2 of 3 I’d say are highly unlikely
