2021 General Draft Thoughts

what are your thoughts on Mayfield, OT Michigan

he's a really hard one to pin down - mobile and well-built - but really inconsistent with his hands - really struggles generally with long-arms and power moves where he offers up his chest a ton - idk if it's a lack of length or what... i wonder if there's a slight functional strength deficit (albeit there are plenty of snaps where he looks powerful)

got lots of tools and lots of good looking reps - but there's a general pattern of being out-leveraged - it's a good sign to see the massive improvement as he gained more experience but he's so inconsistent it's really hard to tell whether he's just raw or whether there are actual issues

It's now basically guaranteed that QBs are going 1, 2 and 3 - and tbh now that 49ers are at 3 it makes it more likely a QB gets taken at 4 too - either by atlanta or whichever of the panthers or broncos manages to trade into that spot

i could see the 49ers liking Trey Lance but i'd love to see zach wilson or justin fields in kyle shanahan's offence

Yeah I'm thinking this is just what we need. We are going to see a lot of good defensive players fall in the draft. Between QBs, WRs, and OL I could see top defensive players falling into the late teens, late first round.

The 49ers did hire Mike LaFleur who was the 49ers passing game coordinator so you will likely see Zach Wilson in Shanahan's offense but just in New York.

especially tackle but OL in general seems to fall off a cliff somewhere in the 4th round (in grades terms)

And it's fair to ask if drafting another Ben Bredeson or Ben Powers type in the 4th round makes us any better. Probably not. If they're hitting interior OL, it's gotta be early. Maybe a developmental swing T later.

Not a slam dunk prospect but one of the higher ceiling tackles in the class, I think he could be an excellent LG in our system as a rookie and with some development from our great OL coaches I think he’d be our starter at RT next year. Supreme athlete, great move blocker, needs better pad and hip level coming out of his stance, resets with his feet as well as any OL in the class, good down blocks and combo blocks up on the 2nd level as well. As Rossi said, pretty poor hand usage, needs to time strikes better, needs to place them better and in general just have a goal with his hands instead of just holding arms out at length and trying to catch defenders too often.

ultimately I think he’s a late round 1 talent, I would place him firmly behind the Jenkins/AVT tier of OT even though he may have more natural tackle traits than them. He belongs in the Dillon radunz tier

the problem i have with this idea is that the reason QB, WR and OL are going early is because there aren't a ton of great defensive prospects in this class

for sure - no point adding to that backup stable of interior OL - we're looking for a starting calibre prospect which means we hit it early - as you say tackle could be later (but again i think that falls off around the 4th round sometime too)

Whats the move 1st rnd now that we have watkins? If we go edge, is there a chance moore or st brown will be there in 2nd?

BPA out of edge, wr, OL would be my best guess. signing Watkins won't stop us from taking a wideout, especially since he is on a 1 yr contract.

i think moore goes in the 1st or early 2nd - if it's not to us at 27 then it'll be someone soon afterwards

st brown could definitely be there at the end of round 2 though...

i think there's only 3 edge guys who we'll be taking at 27 though - phillips, paye or ojulari - and i imagine that all 3 of those guys will probably be gone when we're picking at 27

but i think watkins doesn't really change the board in the sense that he allows us to go BPA (and if that's a receiver then we'll still be taking a receiver) - all it means is that we won't feel forced to reach for a WR if they aren't BPA

Edge although the board will be empty (1st round grade edges) once we pick
Dickerson
Wr.

assuming the obvious guys are gone:

At wr I’d be looking at Bateman, Moore, Marshall jr (maybe)
At edge it’s the 3 guys I listed - Phillips, paye, ojulari
At OL it’s dickerson, Humphrey (might be a bit early but wouldn’t be mad), Davis (also might be a bit early but again wouldn’t be mad) - this is me assuming that Jenkins and Vera-tucker are gone
At CB it’s Greg Newsome (only too 4 CB on my board who might be around)
At S it’s Richie Grant

for me that’s the list of guys I’d look at across all the position groups who have a chance to be available that i'd be interested in - tons of guys I like if we trade down though

to me given the above it really feels like if we’re picking at 27 then someone amazing has fallen or it’s a WR - otherwise feels like value-wise we’ll be better off trading down
