2021 General Draft Thoughts

assuming the obvious guys are gone:

At wr I’d be looking at Bateman, Moore, Marshall jr (maybe)
At edge it’s the 3 guys I listed - Phillips, paye, ojulari
At OL it’s dickerson, Humphrey (might be a bit early but wouldn’t be mad), Davis (also might be a bit early but again wouldn’t be mad) - this is me assuming that Jenkins and Vera-tucker are gone
At CB it’s Greg Newsome (only too 4 CB on my board who might be around)
At S it’s Richie Grant

for me that’s the list of guys I’d look at across all the position groups who have a chance to be available that i'd be interested in - tons of guys I like if we trade down though

to me given the above it really feels like if we’re picking at 27 then someone amazing has fallen or it’s a WR - otherwise feels like value-wise we’ll be better off trading down
What you like about marshall jr? Ive only watched a little on him so i could be missing out but i honestly dont see it

where do you project him?
Probably Somewhere between round 3 and 5 if I had to guess. Typically a guy some teams will love and some won't touch until very late. I'd say someone will take a flier on him but at the same time it wouldn't shock me if a team just loves him because he's a football dude and drafts him round 3.
I probably would draft him round 3 if I was a GM.

Decided to check out his IG cause of how much hype is around him and the Ravens.

Watched this clip he just posted and the biggest thing I noticed was how the clip would always edit out his breaks. He must be really stiff and those cuts ain’t looking smooth to be doing that.

I don’t really like any WRs around that 27 spot tbh. Only one I would be somewhat hyped about is Elijah Moore, but I don’t see Ravens pulling that trigger. Just doesn’t feel like a ravens type pick.

I’m not too high on Marshall myself, but I think he’s bound to end up here... so much smoke there and I think there’s fire behind it, wr is gonna be a priority and Marshall just looks like a guy Eric would pick, he likes a little pizzazz from his first/second round picks it seems

I have him right at the end of 1 - it took me a while to see it too but he’s got lots of great traits - he’s tall, fast, moves really fluidly - physical at the catch-point (there were a few drops in 2020 but I’m not too worried about them)

if I knew he was going to have to play only outside vs tons of press coverage he’d be lower on my board but I don’t think that’s what most of the league really does anymore

Marshall’s a mismatch with the tools and some nuance to become a really impressive route-runner

I think it’s unlikely he’d be BPA for me at 27 but if we picked him I’d be really excited about it... a bit like how i felt about tee Higgins last year tbh (not that they’re the same player but I feel pretty similarly about them as prospects)

doesn’t look like hiding breaks to me - not by my notes right now but I’ll see what my notes say about his route-running and report back lol...

My route-running notes on Marshall:
  • There’s some flashes of nice process in his routes but right now he’s winning mostly with his athleticism – often aligned in the slot or stacked to avoid press but he releases off the line explosively with no wasted movement – has springy athleticism and quick feet that allow him to cut sharply and burst out of his break – demonstrates some nice pacing to come open – can struggle to fight through contact to stay completely clean through the route when challenged physically but then also was hardly ever re-routed later in the route – but physical DBs early in the route were an issue
  • His stems can be really nice – he uses his strides to eat up cushion and threaten vertically even on underneath stuff and really speed up the corner – sometimes he angles his stems to set-up his breaks well and conserves momentum so well through his cuts – is able to jab and cut at speed to create separation
  • Efficiency at the break-point is a bit mixed – shows the ability to break back towards the QB on underneath stuff sharply but also sometimes drifts and doesn’t flatten which can allow defenders to close – cutting on vertical routes is where he’s at his most dynamic with his ability to use those hard jabs
  • Stacks really well on vertical routes – uses his body and hands well to create and maintain late separation

doesn't seem to be athletically limited with his breaks - just a little limited with his route-tree and sometimes drifting at the break-point (but that's a technique thing more than an athletic deficit type thing because it's inconsistent rather than absent)

I have only watched one game but didn't care for Marshall in that game at all. gets off the line well enough but a very limited route runner. slants, hitches and go routes with very little creativity. Decent slant runner.
poor hands. Awful blocker for his size. seems disinterested if he isn't the first option. Based on that game, there is no way I would take him with our first or second round pick.

quick feet..some upside but man did he look over hyped.

So tell me something, every year we go through this with certain quarterbacks. To quote Ryan Clark... "This is always the season it seems we have to answer a ton of questions about certain players, about certain quarterbacks. We had the questions about Lamar Jackson, questions about Cam Newton, and now those questions seem to be about Justin Fields here."

Why is this the narrative and we seemingly never get these same questions about say Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Zach Wilson, etc.

Good question. I hope Fields goes to either the Falcons or Panthers. It'll make it MUCH easier for me to root for his success.

Fields in the ATL would make me want to root for the falcons

side note: is it weird that I feel like Zach Wilson is going to be a bust? I get that Mitch vibe. I’m curious to see what Joe D do in this draft

All depends on the team he goes to. I don't know what to make of the green Ravens.

Im lowkey rooting for the Jets to nail it. Only because I want Joe D making us look good

he's definitely a poor blocker - there were some drops that crept in in 2020 but otherwise looked like he had pretty good hands to me (especially in 2019) - runs an absolute ton of slants for sure

it's just rare for a guy that size to move that well - you see hints of nice route-running processes that suggest that skill can be developed given he has those awesome movement skills - a lot of his grade for me is projecting those flashes forwards - the way he's able to cut on vertical routes with his size and frame is awesome and he has rare speed and quickness for that size too

other than physicality through the route - i see flashes of basically all the other skills he'd need to be successful as a receiver just not consistent and not always at the same time

in terms of his disinterest - my guess is you watched a game from 2020 (obviously not an excuse but he clearly was checking out towards the end before he opted-out)
