Thread for post-draft general thoughts - mostly ravens (but not strictly just ravens)

What did you think of the draft class as a whole?

Lots of double-dipping...
Lots of power 5 guys...
Lots of sparq athletes...

Any grades for the picks?
Any grades for the draft as a whole?

I think it was a weird draft, but I also kind of expected a weird draft. We had heard the lead up for the last couple of months that there was poor depth and opinions were as varied as possible, and that turned into reality.

Picks I love:
Rashod Bateman
Odafe Oweh
Tylan Wallace

Picks I like:
Ben Cleveland
Daelin Hayes

Questionable but optimistic:
Brandon Stephens
Shaun Wade

Weird:
Ben Mason

I think (other than Mason), I liked the draft as a whole collective group more than I liked some of the individual picks - still have questions individually about the 2 DBs you listed but in tandem I'm excited about them

obviously the lack of a tackle is frustrating - but you can't force the board if it doesnt fall that way - we clearly weren't interested in any of the 1st round guys at tackle and i have a feeling our tackle board was wiped out by the end of round 2

im surprised we didnt take a flyer on a guy like stone forsythe with one of those 5th rounders though

You already know where I stood with the Bateman pick.

Would've liked for us to address RT but maybe this class wasn't all that as we approached the later rounds.

Ben Mason is a complete head scratcher unless he's going to be a backup TE or S/T player.

Also, was Shaun Wade the one who was getting embarrassed by DeVonta in the Nat'l Championship or was it someone else?

that was wade yeah - got put in the tumble-dryer by cornell powell the week before in the semi-final too

tackle was always gonna fall off a cliff after round 4 - looks like it actually went off a cliff somewhere in the early-mid 3rd round - that run near the end of the 2nd probably destroyed any chances we had of getting one

I’m glad we didn’t force anything and I suspect we went with potential and previous production hoping they can reclaim it with coaching and a better offseason. This may be the most boom or bust draft I’ve ever seen from us and that’s not a bad thing. A lot of these guys had great 2019 and eh 2020 so if they can reclaim that form then this could be one of our best. I think the Draft this year was always going to be more of a crapshoot than any prior so makes sense in strategy.

I hope they can do it but we will see regardless.

The way i see it is if we get 3 starters out of this class for next year its a win. If 2 other guys manage to niche out a role for themselves than its just icing on the cake. Our first 3 picks imo will be impact players next year, the rest are developmental

the DBs too are with an eye to the future - next year jimmy smith, anthony averett and deshon elliott are all free agents

Love the Bateman, Wallace, and hayes picks, I’ve warmed up to Cleveland and think within a day or 2 I’m gonna love that pick as well.

slightly disliked the oweh pick but I understand it.

hated the db picks.

wtf is Ben mason

if you told me what we were gonna net from trading Orlando brown, I wouldn’t have wanted to trade him. Like that we picked up some decent picks for next years draft.

all in all, I’m very happy with our wr room which wouldn’t be a thing without this draft, so that’s a plus, Cleveland has a chance to be a game changer on our OL after many swings and misses, he looks much more promising than Phillips, powers, or bredeson looked as prospects, without question. Every other pick though I’m pretty meh or flat out annoyed with.

Only pick I absolutely hated was the Wade pick. The guy sucks.

had an injury in 2019
not sure he fully got his explosion back for 2020

still dominated at the catch-point and shows some nuance to his route-running - gets bullied at the release in press though
Ya the press is what worries me the most about him, its something most of our receivers struggle with. I do like how we have a bunch of guys now that can do different things

sammy watkins beats press with physicality
hollywood beats press with quickness and explosion
bateman projects to beat press because of his creative release packages and physicality through the route

tylan wallace probably not gonna do well vs press (at least early) - but i think he's gonna play some slot here initially and he's got time to develop his releases with keith williams and tee martin

It often worries me when you have 3 rookie starts in a draft because rookies tend to underperform veterans, regardless of what round they are selected in, and especially get outperformed by players in years 2-4. If Bateman and Jayson start then I guess that is expected of first round picks but when its 3 starters it feels like those are likely to be team weaknesses.

or they earned the start because they're good?

Better to watch Wade's previous year playing in the slot. That's his preferred position. Believe he has some potential there.
