He had some of the same issues I think in pass protection. He tends to lean and lose balance. Additionally, he'll need a better first step from snap than he showed in college., both in meeting shades and power across from him and picking up 3T to his left on counter.

I'm sure he'll be OK and perhaps steady the position for a year. We'll have to wait and see.,but he'll likely be adequate and I'd hope for better.
I personally would expect him to be at the level of Ryan Jensen.

It took like 3-4 years for Jensen to even be a serviceable player, and I still think he's like a borderline top 10 Center.

We are lucky if Bozeman is a top 15 C. He’ll be serviceable but I’m not expecting miracles

i think you could make a very easy argument that Ryan Jensen right now is the best C in the league...
it took him a while but he's been excellent since

For Jensen, it was major sleep issues that held him back. Once those were fixed by a doc, he became good

it was a bit more complicated than that but that tbf but the sleep apnea definitely had an impact

i think the game did take a bit of time to slow down for him but also he got better using his aggression and power in a more controlled way and not getting caught lunging or leaning - his footwork in pass pro in 2020 was brilliant and you combine that with the nasty streak he has and the reputation as a road grader and he's easily in the discussion for the top C in the league - and i think he's got a very good argument to be thought of as number 1 in that conversation

Is Tyree Phillips even in the LG competition? I don't have a good feel for who he is on this team. Both short and longer term.

i cant see why he wouldn't be at least in the competition - he's only a year removed from winning the RG job in an offseason with no OTAs or minicamps and all while changing positions

he had a not great rookie year but he also played significant snaps at both tackle and guard - it's a big offseason for him to cement himself in that OL conversation - at the moment i think it's more likely he starts the year as the swing tackle but it would not surprise me if he wins that LG spot

Wow that's a lot stronger than I would have expected. The reason I'm thinking he doesn't really have a chance is because he would have to beat our Ben Powers at his natural position, and Ben Cleveland, Ben Bredeson, and Mekari.

By no means do I think it's impossible, but I feel like Powers will be the week 1 LG and if not him Cleveland. But who knows, it'll be exciting see.

If Cleveland is not ready and the coaching staff still doesn't like Powers, I'd expect Tyree to beat out the other 2. I just don't see Tyree beating Powers and Cleveland.

Tyree is in a competition for RG. Zeitler is very solid but I’m not counting out the fact that Tyree is being developed for either that spot or RT

coaches clearly dont like powers despite his fairly decent performances - the reason i give tyre a better chance than the rest (outside of cleveland) is that he already beat all of those guys out last year too as a rookie with no offseason

in an ideal world, tyre doesnt play a snap in 2021 because it would mean a few things: 1) cleveland beat him out for LG, 2) both of the tackles stayed healthy and 3) mekari/bredeson did well as the 6th OL

but if we're giving boykin and ferguson chances to overcome poor starts to their careers, it would be tough not to give Tyre the same type of opportunity especially given the way his first offseason went - i do wonder what would have happened had he been able to play the whole year at RG...

Yeah I agree with all that. I don't think he's a lost cause or anything, just that he's in a crowded room and it's not clear to me he's the top 2 right this second. If Powers loses the job only to come in and be good later in the year I'm gonna be pissed with Harbaugh. Something about the whole Powers situation is so weird. I don't know why they don't like him. He's not the greatest but he was clearly the right option last year and we only got there based on injuries.

with powers it's definitely worth pointing out that he benefitted from an offensive style change when he entered the lineup - he was much more successful making blocks in L2 than Phillips was but not sure he's anything more than a replacement level player

If Powers loses the job and that's because Tyree or Cleveland are playing well or at least decently, than that's great. We out we thought was best out there and they're doing well enough. I just don't want to see Powers on the bench IF he's the best man for the job just because of some weird personality quirk or whatever it is.

i doubt it's that at all tbh - i think they just see him as limited and while they're content to have him as a backup, they don't love him as a starter
