With attention shifting here now...
Of course I say this without really delving deep into anyone to this point and just watching on TV on Saturdays, but think the QB market will really play into who we end up with. This looks like another weak year if you have a need there, but we know teams can still panic if they don't have a guy. Hoping there's some hype around a Pickett or Howell or Willis and teams just feel the need to beat the others and bam, something good makes it to us. But I feel like if there's any year in recent history where QBs could be waiting a bit, it's this year. All have some things to like but none of them scream a good NFL player at this juncture. My hope is that Mac Jones is a shining example of teams not wanting to wait and just taking a guy.
from my initial look around it seems like Pickett is expected to go somewhere R1, Willis as you say could have someone hyped hoping to capture the lightning in a bottle
but ive thought for a while that sam howell is probably due to rise up the boards and rankings - has all the tools to get scouts excited and when surrounded with weapons in 2020 he was dynamic and electric - he's also headlining the senior bowl too so a big chance to have scouts fall in love with him
id be surprised if more than 3 QBs were in play in round 1
matt corrall and desmond ridder at first glance dont strike me as the guys that nfl teams would covet that high but it only takes 1 team to fall in love
as you say though the free agent market is going to be massive here - cant imagine that under fire coaching staffs in carolina and new york will be able to not draft a rookie with their top pick if they dont land one of the free agents (or trade for a proven guy)
got to think all of these teams in the top 15 will be looking at a QB somewhere in free agency or the draft:
lions
texans
giants
panthers
falcons (maybe)
broncos
washington
vikings (maybe - if new coaching staff)
and a couple outside the top 15: saints, steelers
got to think though that the giants and panthers staffs cant afford not to find a QB this offseason and depending on what happens in houston we're probably looking at situations in houston and denver where new coaches want to find "their" guy to nurture and develop - possibly minnesota and washington too
lots of QB needy teams - not many QB prospects
