Can I turn off email alerts without turning off the alerts in the top right corner when i log in to the forum

Yes!

In order to stop receiving emails, you will need to go to your user preferences. You can get there by clicking on your username at the top right of the screen, then clicking on the preferences link. From there, deselect the checkbox next to the text that reads: "and receive email notifications of replies".

i still get emails on the threads i posted in before i deselected the email option - its a little annoying

Now you mention it that's exactly what's happening me. We probably just have to unwatch or unfollow those threads to reset it

That's probably what you'll have to do. From past experience, it shouldn't keep sending you emails, so I don't know why it is continuing to even after changing the settings. But yeah, if you unwatch then re-watch them, it should fix it.
