Article Lost's Pre-Super Bowl/Combine Mock Draft

Oldfaithful

Hall of Famer
Super Bowl Sunday is just around the corner which means that I am going to release a 32-team mock before that… After this and after the combine I will be releasing another mock. Then after compensatory picks are announced as well. Then days before the draft I will be releasing a full 7 round mock, with each round coming. Hopefully I can get some help with that.. I am only one man. This is what I think happens, not what I hope happens. No trades. No nothing.

  1. Cleveland- Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State. The Browns actually make a good pick here. Barkley in my eyes is the best in the draft and it is not even close. Although it seems absurd to take a running back #1 overall, behind the offensive line put in front of the Browns, along with the absurd amount of cap room that they have, they can afford to go defense in free agency and take a bonafide stud with the #1 overall pick. Saquon will likely win rookie of the year here. Rosen would be the right pick, but they’re the Browns. They’ll settle for this.
  2. New York Giants- Josh Rosen, QB, UCLA. I do not buy into the Josh Allen hype. Although the best athlete of all the quarterbacks in this class, Rosen is the most pro ready, and has the highest ceiling. Rosen also has the best arm in this class, not in terms of strength(though he’s certainly not lacking in that department), but in terms of his combination of touch, accuracy, and above average(which let’s be fair.. That’s what his arm is. It’s on a Matt Ryan level of arm strength) arm strength. Rosen is also very adept at reading defenses and navigating a pocket. The Giants get a guy who is more likely than not to develop into a franchise QB. He has issues, but if the Giants can keep him upright, he’ll be a good player.
  3. Indianapolis- Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama. The Colts all the help they can get on the defensive side of the ball. They are a legit tradeback candidate to go get an olinemen later but following the rules of my mock draft, I will not be trading back. Nonetheless Fitzpatrick is versatile enough to play corner or safety. Sure, it’s not a need but he is the best player available and would be ideal going forward. Bradley Chubb is another option, but I could see him going later. No More Vontae Davis means they are going to need another corner to go along side Quincy Wilson. Fitzpatrick is an ideal guy.
  4. Cleveland - from Houston- Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming. This is classic Browns pick. I am not a fan of Josh Allen. Easily the best athlete, but has valid concerns with accuracy. I do believe that he needs a year or two on the bench before he is ready, and even then, I have my doubts. I do not see a franchise QB when I look at him, I see Colin Kaepernick 2.0. I have doubts about everything when it comes to him. He has all the ability, but we’ve seen that fail before.
  5. Denver- Bradley Chubb, DE, NC State. I have Kirk Cousins signing here this offseason. Which would make a ton of sense. The Broncos need a QB first and foremost and while I hate John Elway, he’s not an idiot. This would allow them to take the best player available. While they need work on the offensive line, Chubb is too good of a talent to pass up on. The Broncos have a ton of talent in the secondary, and Von Miller is still a monster, but they could use another pass rusher. After this pick they could start to exclusively focus on the offensive line.
  6. New York Jets- Sam Darnold, QB, USC. The Jets get there target of choice despite incorrectly tanking. I have my issues with Darnold, but I still think that under the right circumstances that he is a franchise QB. He’s got a stronger arm than Rosen does and is fairly accurate. He can handle a pocket as well. He is going to need help, but he’s the right pick.
  7. Tampa Bay- Quenton Nelson, OG, Notre Dame- Yeah. I see this happening. The Buccs continue to disappoint their fans yet again. They will take the best guard available and hope for nothing but the best. They need a lot of help up front, but Nelson is the best player available bar none.
  8. Chicago- Calvin Ridley, WR, Chicago- One of the most obvious selections in the entire draft. Chicago is the only team in the NFL worse off at the wide receiver position than we are. While they have more needs, Ridley is one of the safest players in the entire draft and I think that taking him would be in the best interests of their new Quarterback. While I am not a fan of Trubisky, Ridley is the type of WR that would work well with him and would provide Chicago with a nice compliment to Meredith.
  9. San Francisco- Joshua Jackson, CB, Iowa. Jimmy G looks like the guy for the future(at the moment, we can never predict the future). But they do have a pressing need a CB.. And the defense in general. Not to mention the emergence of Jared Goff and the presence of Russell Wilson will prove to be challenging. Jackson is a turnover machine who is solid in coverage.
  10. Oakland- Roquan Smith, LB, Georgia. Derek Carr came off of more of a down season but that was to be expected given the injury. Nonetheless, while Mack is a one man wrecking ball they have all kinds of needs on the defensive side of the ball. They will opt to take the best player available. Smith is as good of a linebacker prospect as I’ve come across and having him there next to Mack would help the run defense tremendously. Expect a full defensive overhaul this offseason.
  11. Miami- Derrius Guice, RB, LSU. This is a Miami move. They traded away Jay Ajayi this season for pennies on the dollar for little to no reason whatsoever. They had their chips bet on Smith, but he is not there anymore so they do not know what to do. The good news is that Guice is a damn good prospect that will breathe some life into that offense once Tannehil returns. Drake looks like a decent player, but Guice givies the team a bell cow. They may have a lot of other needs, but the Dolphins usually screw this kind of thing up.
  12. Cincinnati- Derwin James, S, Florida State. James is a good prospect and the Bengals need a safety. Sure, they need oline help more than anything but James might be the best player available. After last season’s risk inclusive draft if I were them I would play it safe. This is the right move for them even though I like McGlinchey.
  13. Washington- Vita Vea, DT, Washington. Did nobody see the absolutely pathetic way they got gashed on run defense this year? Honest to god the Redskins are likely screwed after the Alex Smith trade so they take the second best defensive tackle in the class after Payne.
  14. Green Bay-Denzel Ward, CB, Ohio State. Easy pick here. The Packers need all the defensive help they can get in order to please Rodgers. They may have drafted Kevin King last offseason but I have doubts about him and given the competition in the division they could use another corner anyway.
  15. Arizona- Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma. I have my doubts about Mayfield but I think in the right circumstances he can get the job done. Sadly, the cardinals have a ton of needs other than QB but having David Johnson and Fitzgerald to help back him up would be good for the guy going forward. I have a third round grade on Mayfield, but this could be a significant possibility.
  16. Baltimore- Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre Dame- We are more likely than not to cut Austin Howard this offseason. We could use a new right tackle anyways. Since the team is so hellbent on slating Alex Lewis at the guard spot, I decided to just get up a walking talking carbon copy of a prospect of Ronnie Stanley. Which I’m fine with. Stanley is still one of the most promising young tackles in the league and I have little doubt he will “bounce back”. Nonetheless, McGlinchey would solidify the right side of the line for Flacco and help open lanes for our inevitable tandem of Collins-Dixon-Woodhead. Mike is a hell of a get here. I hope he’s our pick.
  17. Los Angeles Chargers- Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama. Payne provides some much needed interior help for the chargers. Add him with that scary edge rushing tandem of Bosa and Ingram and the defense becomes a lot stronger. Some should be scared.
  18. Seattle-Orland Brown, RT, Oklahoma. The Seahawks could use all the help they could get on the offensive line. Brown just happens to be perfect. They can slot him in at RT and the impressive running back corps that they have could continue to thrive.
  19. Dallas-Tremanie Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech. Dallas’ linebacking corps is going to need some serious work. Not sure I would trust Smith in the long run and Sean Lee is injury prone. Any upgrade on the defense is going to be one that they take.
  20. Detroit- Arden Key, Edge, LSU. Patricia gets a new toy to play with on the defensive front. While Detroit still lacks a running game, they could use another pass rusher to go with Ansah. Or if Ansah walks they could still use another pass rusher. I think Key is overrated but if anyone can get solid talent out of him, it’s Patricia.
  21. Buffalo- Donate Jackson, CB, LSU Back to back LSU players here. The Bills could use some help in the secondary anyway, but the point here is moot. They got screwed in my scenario by not being able to trade up. They hate Tyrod, for some reason, and now they need a QB that they won’t be able to get. Despite the back to back picks.
  22. Buffalo- Billy Price, C, Ohio State. Eric Wood unexpectedly retired and Price fits their scheme like a glove. This pick is a no brainer pick like the previous one.
  23. Los Angeles Rams- Rashann Evans, LB, Alabama. The LA Rams are living in the best possible timeline. Overall young team with a tremendous amount of upside, and could be a free agency draw. Along with being able to keep the majority of their top end talent. They get to take a guy who I see as the best player available here.
  24. Carolina-Taven Bryant, DT, Florida. Carolina is in a good position going forward, but they could use another DT to put along side Short. Bryant would be a very good choice. High ceiling and could help significantly as an interior rusher. Peppers has another season in him and Johnson might be brought back for cheaper.
  25. Tennessee- Sam Hubbard, DE, Ohio State. The Titans just hired a defensive minded HC in Vrabel and just got Dean Pees. They could use another bidding pass rusher as their options are getting older by the day. They get a raw, under achieving, but still talented player in Hubbard.
  26. Atlanta- Mark Andrews, TE, Oklahoma. The reality is that they need a new offensive coordinator. But they won’t take that. Austin Hooper is not a bad tight end by any stretch, but the compliment that Andrews would provide to Atlanta would be simply too good to pass on. The constantly looming threat of Julio Jones would make having Andrews on the squad be terrifying as he always finds a way to get open over the middle.
  27. New Orleans- Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M. The Saints have very few needs so they are in position here to take the best player available. After trading away Brandin Cooks, they decide to go get Brees another weapon in what could very well be his final season in the league. Kirk provides the team with an explosive slot option at the WR position to compliment an already very impressive weapons arsenal that the team has.
  28. Pittsburgh- Justin Reid, S, Stanford. The Steelers last season were one of the most overrated teams in the league and were heavily exposed vs. Jacksonville. They have a few solid pieces on that defense but it is the clear cut liability. One of the liabilities is Mike Mitchell. They need to move on from him and this pick fits the bill.
  29. Jacksonville- James Washington, WR, Oklahoma State.Assuming that they somehow acquire Eli Manning this offseason they are going to have some needs on the offensive side of the ball. While I’d prefer offensive line, this seems more likely with both Lee and Robinson being free agents. Washington would provide a quality option to not only stretch the field, but he does have certain traits that would allow him to develop into a #1 WR if under the right circumstances.
  30. Minnesota- Isaiah Wynn, G, Georgia. Minnesota is in a fantastic position for the near future. With almost no weaknesses on the defensive side of the ball(sans corner but that issue might fix itself). Joe Berger is about t retire and getting Wynn would only help Dalvin Cook when he comes back. The Vikings have a lot of pieces on the team to look forward too. Just pick the right QB guys. I’m rooting for you.
  31. Philadelphia- Connor Williams, OT, Texas. Jason Peters might never play again. They could use another tackle. Connor Williams needs some work, and his stock as taken a dive, but this is where he should go. And he’d be a good fit. His tape is inconsistent and he needs to get stronger but that is one of the easiest fixes for most prospects. Williams provides stability for a team that is more likely than not to win a ring in the near to immediate future.
  32. New England-Harold Landry, Edge, Boston College. I would have wanted Landry last year if he had come out. Which he should have. Nonetheless his tape from last year showed a good prospect. Now, the Patriots get to take the home town kid while adding some much needed defensive talent, which has been their biggest down fall. Landry should come in and help provide some pressure off of the edge. Here’s to hoping that Tom Brady either retires or falls off next season so we don’t have to put up with their cancerous fanbase again.
Round Two: DJ Moore, WR, Maryland

View attachment 1056

DJ Moore is potentially what the doctor ordered for this offense. Now I am of the belief that we end up acquiring one of the following in Dez Bryant/Demaryius Thomas/Emmanuel Sanders/Randall Cobb, so on and so forth. Nonethless, we are going to need a compliment to the other wide receivers. Now, if we let Wallace walk that’s okay as Chris Moore(the other Moore) looks to be at the very worst a solid deep threat moving forward. DJ Moore is the yards after the catch guy we wished Maclin could be. Moore isn’t fast, but he is quick and shifty and he has shown he can make tough catches. Whether he is a #1 WR or not is kind of moot, as he appears to be a quality option that any team would appreciate having going forward. In spite of horrid quarterback play, he proved to be a very good option. I don’t think he’s going to be special, but he's going to be a quality option that the defense is going to have to pay attention to. Not the big strong red zone threat the team is looking for, but a potentially quality playmaker that the team is sorely lacking right now. Him, a free agent acquisition, and Chris Moore would be better than what we were fielding last season.

Round Three: Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State

web-Kent-State-v-Penn-State-5.jpg

It’s fitting that the Dennis Pitta clone ends up here in Baltimore. Kind of funny really. Gesicki gives us the red zone threat that the team is sorely lacking. He does not provide much as a blocker but he does have tons of value as a potential third down security blanket and someone the defense has to account for. Having him work the middle of the field could work very well in the long run. Especially if we get another WR in the free agency period as well. Likewise we could regulate him to slot duty like we did with Pitta and suddenly teams have a reason to be afraid of us again somewhat. Not a guy with elite potential like Goedert and Andrews, but getting Gesicki would be amazing value.

Round Three Comp: Jaleel Scott, WR, New Mexico State

new-mexico-state-wide-receiver-jaleel-scott-makes-a-onehanded-catch-picture-id841412044

I understand why Jaleel Scott gets overlooked, but that does not mean I agree with it. With a good combine he could rise up the boards further and further. But examining his tape I don’t see a guy who can be a #1 WR.. But I do see someone who could easily become a quality option both in the red zone and potentially on third downs. He does contested catches as well as anyone in this draft class and his size makes him difficult to cover. Decent athlete but not great speed wise and might have some separation issues. But he could be a much needed and good piece to have on the team going forward.

Round Four: Kylie Fitts, Utah

ufoot_111915~1.jpg

Kylie Fitts has been hurt. But he’s got some serious talent if he can stay healthy. Given that we can hopefully figure out a way to trade the uselessness that is Za’Darius Smith in the offseason we could replace him with someone who actually has talent as a pass rusher. He has problems as a run defender but those can be overlooked. In a limited role as a pass rushing specialist I could easily see him succeeding at the NFL level. Plus he comes in with a chip on his shoulders, something Harbaugh would like. I see us filling most of our defensive needs through free agency this go around, but Fitts has pure talent that we’d be dumb to sit on.

Round Five: Riley Ferguson, QB, Memphis

79c761fa1340fd58085942dd90760944

I still see Riley as a quality backup QB option that the team is likely to need. I don’t see him turning into a full time starter in the instance that Flacco sucks again, but I would trust Ferguson to win a few games in the event of a potential Flacco absence.

Round Six: Phillip Lindsay, RB, Colorado

492201718.jpg

To end this draft I decide to go get us the inevitable replacement for Danny Woodhead. Whether gets hurt or not is not important. What is important is that Lindsay could be that third down back we’ve been looking for. He’s quick, he’s got good burst, and he’s a versatile player. Good receiver out of the backfield, but also solid in pass protection. Lindsay is what we are looking for in a third down back and he could very well be an important piece moving forward.

And that is my mock before the combine and super bowl happen. Hope you all enjoyed it.

Patriots are going to win

Good job Lost, I like McGlinchey as well, although I’d rather have Nelson.

I love the bones of this mock:
Mcglinchey in the first is a phenomenal pick
Gesicki im happy with in the 3rd as well as Jaleel Scott (i think although i need to watch some more film)
Riley Ferguson is my pick of the late round day 3 qbs and i think he has the tools to develop into a high level backup for us (albeit it might be a case of carrying 3 qbs into the year if so because im not sure if he'll be ready to go game 1)
My only question is on that 2nd rounder... i think wr is the pick there but is DJ Moore really the B wr available at that spot? (for me the answer is likely no or there has been a run on wrs at which point its probably worth going after another position as much as id be irked by it)

I like this mock and agree with most the points that @rossihunter2 hit on. Feel there would be a better wr available in the 2nd, although I’m a fan of D.J. Moore.

maybe if we were trading down towards the end of the 2nd i could see it but im not sure i dig it if we stand pat

I've done more scouting on Moore. He just seems like a Raven pick. Better options on the board but we still get a solid one. who would you rather have? I do think there's a run on WRs for what it's worth
