The Second Half, The First Half and Yet More Overtime

we do do that - and it's one of my least favourite plays @JoeyFlex5 i know hates it too - we've done it so often over the past 3 years in high leverage situations where we roll out right - sometimes it creates a big play but so often it feels like the play's dead straight away

and i hate how it completely eliminates half the field - we've got so much speed on offence that feels like we're handicapping ourselves...

we do run a ton of play-action - but hard to bootleg out of shotgun as effectively as under centre which we dont run a ton of (albeit we run it more than we ever have with lamar) - the other reason is because often lamar's got great pocket feel so he can rollout to avoid pressure and simulate that same effect on the scramble drill

but worth pointing out that we've done a lot of play-action max protect this year and it's created a really nice pocket for lamar and allowed for some big plays - that bomb to hollywood against the broncos being a prime example
I despise it and for all the reasons you listed. Lamar just needs to do a better job rolling out early when it’s needed, and we maintain the whole field until it’s absolutely necessary to cut it down, and Lamar has the ability to do it better than anyone, he just tries too hard sometimes to climb the pocket when he should roll out, and I think often that’s because our interior has done a bad job at holding their blocks and allow disengage and Lamar wasn’t expecting it

see that's where you and i would disagree - i like lamar staying in the pocket like that rather than rolling out early - and i think some of those scenarios where he hangs in there are where some of our critical big plays/conversions have come from

and i worry that bailing early would become a bad habit

but it's also why id really love to replace ben powers at LG because he's the big liability in pass pro on the interior - zeitler and bozeman aren't perfect especially against supremely powerful athletic guys but powers is a mess in pass pro - get Tyre in there and suddenly lamar might have that extra hair of a second to climb and find that throw

even villanueva's fine most of the time on the outside (it's just that when he loses, he loses catastrophically)

but yeah we're agreed on those designed roll-outs

I’m not saying roll out early, I’m saying to recognize when it’s a bad time to climb the pocket and instead stay deep or roll out. Too many times he climbs into a collapsing pocket when the edge rush wasn’t even that deep, and he then tries to hop back and then roll out.

I feel that is one of his more frustrating habits to me, it’s where he takes most of his avoidable sacks

Going through the coaches film - and i completely forgot about that whole post-Cook 66 yarder sequence where the ravens had 5 straight goal-line stands before the refs screwed up and missed the false start by the vikings on Cousins's sneak...

not anywhere near finished with the film but the DL were quietly dominating the interior of the Vikings OL...

Madubuike was wrecking shop inside, Jelly was stout, Campbell was Campbell lol, broderick was pretty nice too
Bynes and Queen were flying around too

if we can somehow eliminate these defensive lapses and stopping these big plays, this defence is actually fine - not great but good enough... but just too prone to mistakes that gift points

I think Chuck Clark probably had his worst game of the last couple of years against the Vikings - just didnt seem like he was seeing the field well at all - seemed really hesitant to trigger on anything in coverage and i wonder if that's because he was at fault and was caught coming upfield and voiding his responsibility on the jefferson bomb on the 1st drive

EDIT: just seen a play where he looks completely confused on the field pre-snap which you hardly ever see with chuck - luckily the vikings false started

look at colon wash his man down the line lol
and then look at powers pull behind 5 downblocks and then block 2 guys lol

stephens looks really natural and comfortable in coverage - seems to be improving each week and his athleticism and footwork are really impressive - his natural ability is awesome

took a poor angle coming downhill in the running game - triggered from the post impressively and shot downhill but missed the tackle because of the angle - those are the kinds of plays that the defence has been trying to get rid of - they're nearly good plays that become really bad plays...

But he plays with confidence and assurance and seems to have a good understanding of the defence from that safety role

will be interested to see what happens with the dimebacker role - it was solely stephens but obviously if he's the starter then someone else has to take those snaps - jimmy smith could take some for sure, and worth noting that on the 1 dime snap after elliott went down, geno stone was on the field as the VERY deep single high safety

could be a chance for ardarius to get onto the gameday actives too and try and earn some snaps but notable that he's almost exclusively played slot for the ravens so far and tavon's not going anywhere lol

Madubuike played a big part in Queen's tackle for an 8 yard loss.
