and that isn't a good thing. Cost too much with a franchise tag but if we have to that is what we will do.

It is possible we franchise him than extend him, but no way is he reaching free agency. Right @Ellicottraven

I don't know that'd I'd go that far just yet. Still think there's some traction when he gets back in the building this spring/summer. He very well could wait it out and play on the tag but a new top of the market has now been set so there's something to build towards

i think the case could be made that he was waiting for rodgers and stafford (and watson) deals to get done - set the market for him

at that point i guess the question becomes, if not this summer, then who's the big QB coming up who might re-set the market that might massively change his deal moving forwards?

If the "trend" becomes to extend franchise QBs after year 3 (when first eligible), then its basically Kyler Murray (who's eligible now) now. After this season, theoretically, Herbert and Burrow are eligible for extensions, and they'll get massive one's almost certainly.

I don't question a guy betting on himself, but it's certainly risk/reward. Like if Lamar wins a SB this year, I'm still not certain he'd get more than Mahomes did, and it realistically may only make him a couple million per year in AAV.

If his playoff struggles continue, he looks like he did last year, and gets even partially injured again, it's going to devalue him slightly in my opinion. Not like below $40M, but you've now put 4 years of tape out there that says you can't win playoff games, and you'll pretty much never play a full season.

I really don't see a deal getting done in camp/preseason. With him heavily involved in negotiations, I think he'll be on to the season come July. So I think you've got like a four month window to get it done. Plenty can happen during that timeframe, but if we get to August and there's nothing, I'd start being concerned.

the big quibble ive got with that is that in may/june/july he's more likely to be in and around the building with no game-planning or anything specific (film-wise) to work towards so that's exactly the best time for him to be negotiating... he's already gonna be in baltimore, in the facility basically every day and with very low stakes while at the facility

sure once we get to the dog days of training camp and into preseason proper then he'll probably want to focus but there's ample time before then to do the deal

Right. He's likely got between now and training camp, which is end of July, to sign a deal. Otherwise, I don't see it happening this year, and he'll almost certainly be tagged next year.

So do I. Although in this case, I'm really not sure what bet he's making. I'm not really certain anything short of a Lombardi really elevates his price point that much at this point. And even with one, as I said, I'm not convinced he's getting more than Mahomes.

At this point there is far more downside than upside for Lamar. I'm concerned if there's no progress by the end of july/august.

...and this is why wondering what we might get for him in the open market is not such a bad thing after Deshaun Watson's deal. I'll crawl back into my hole now. But wondering about what we could get or if we should pursue options given Lamar's stance.

There's nothing wrong with him wanting to play it slow. There's nothing wrong with us wanting to get a low number deal. That's negotiation. But if the guy doesn't get or doesn't feel the Ravens' commitment and is willing to get paid franchise tag money - that would cripple the team, or potentially so, then why not explore options that would solve many of our pressing problems on the team more quickly and cheaply and put us in a position to either draft or buy in FA a QB that would manage the assets at the teams disposal.

Listen, I love Lamar despite what Ross and others might think. I just speak the unspeakable. I would love him here, but if it cripples us, I don't. If Lamar accounts for so much of the payroll that it costs the team... so long. Someone mentioned Tom Brady in NE. He got paid really well and he was always ready to restructure to better the team. Hopefully Lamar will be too after we get him signed up, but if we can't - or don't think we can, there's nothing wrong with thinking about and planning on how to capitalize on Lamar. That's good business.

What happens after next year? He's tagged and then again - is that still the rule? We've paid him the ave. of the 5 highest salaries in the league for two years with no help on the cap - if he doesn't take the deal then, what next? He walks in FA and signs with whoever he desires and were left with a team without the guy who has carried us, as so many folks on here say he's doing now. Are people willing to get nothing for a generational player? I'm not. EDC should be reading the tea leaves and if it's apparent that there is an impasse and the guy just wants mad money that we can never really agree to then: Sayōnara Lamar.

btw, I only quote your post, RM because it connects to my poorly received post yesterday. Not because I'm calling you out. But I disagree that he couldn't reach FA. He could and will and to the detriment of this team if he does. All options must be considered despite how attached we might feel to Lamar.
