Signings, Cuts, Trades

This is a literally a great deal from the Ravens perspective. I'm sure this is roundabout exactly what they want to pay Lamar. Would imagine there's more guaranteed in a Lamar deal, but this only helps the Ravens case.
I'm on the fence. Wilson is 33. Lamar is 25. I still think the Murray deal is a closer barometer, but I guess you could argue any side.

Like by accolades, Wilson is gigantically more accomplished than Lamar, and thus would deserve more money. But Lamar is also 8 years younger and Wilson only has one playoff win in the last five years.

I don't disagree. Think the AAV is close to what we want, but obviously the guarantees will likely be higher. More a feather in the Ravens cap to prove that the Watson deal is an outlier. Not sure it'll work of course but it gives them more ammo in negotiations IF Lamar is actually pushing for fully guaranteed.

I have some suspicion that's based on no evidence whatsoever that Lamar only wants to sign like a 3 year extension beyond this year. I think he wants to get another mega contract after this one.
I think if he did, it'd be done by now. I don't think the Ravens would have an issue with a 3 year, $140M deal, fully guaranteed.
Well, I should say, they would agree to it. They'll have issue with it, because cap flexibility will be non-existent with that type of deal, and there will be lots of good players we either won't sign or won't extend because of it.

If he's worth it, he'd be only 31 after the 6 year deal. Plenty of room to pick up another bag.

Right! I'm certainly not saying this IS what's happening, but it's another variable that could not look good from the Ravens perspective and be stopping a deal if that's what Lamar wants based on the reasons you gave.

He wouldn't even wait that long. On a six year deal, you're talking new contract after year 3-4, max. Basically whenever the cap balloons.

Was a bad structure, but just look at Flacco's. Signed a six year deal in 2013. Got an extension before 2016 season. Was only 50% of the way through.

Thank you, Denver. Hopefully this moves the needle a bit more for a realistic expectation from Lamar.

agree. Just look at the Russell Wilson deal and he is 33 yo

Alternatively it is possible he ages more like Cam than Russ. I would bet on a short deal with an opportunity to cash in again myself. No matter how you slice it the deal is going to create cap problems whether it is 3 years or 5 years.

more flexibility in a longer term deal to spread out bonuses. I doubt there is a deal less than 4 years or greater than 6.

I mean you can easily add dead cap years onto the end of the contract like Dak did or Brees did or Ben did and others who I do not care to look up at the moment.

of course you can, but it may not be the best thing to do for the franchise either.

Ravens have been resistant to doing that with contracts... for obvious reasons.

Tend to agree. I look at it like this... if the Ravens are going to give him a 3 year deal, why not just do two years of tags? It would arguably cost less.
What are we looking at? $100 million total for 2023 and 2024 if were using exclusive tag?

Which is where I believe we’re all headed followed by an extension.

Said it from jump, I won’t be sweating this until Lamar refuses the tag, which I don’t think he’s gonna do.
