The Andrews, the Defense, and the Blocking

After a tad bit of film review, my initial reaction is that we need to invest in some hog mollies on either side of the line. Get me a motherfucker from Iowa or Nebraska or Wisconsin that lifts hay bails and plays ball only. Get some dogs who don't wear sleeves in the middle of January instead of these dudes that care more about their pregame fashion shows.

I'm being slightly facetious, but the young kids these days just aren't built like they used to be.

That may be something we should look to change, especially in the games where we can't get Henry going. I personally feel like Henry is still visually the same RB he was last season. But last year, it was understandably difficult to take touches from an RB having a monster season, especially when he's known to wear down defenses down the stretch. Even then, Hill managed to amass 141 yards through the first 3 games. We've now had 2 out 3 slower games out of Henry, and Hill's sitting at 59, of which 37 came on a play against a preventative defense. And that's not entirely on Hill. The lanes just have not been there the last 2 weeks. That's where we could use a fast creator like Mitchell who has shown to be a microwave carrier that doesn't require 2-3 touches to get hot before he's going. We're wasting his skillset if he's not supplementing our lapses in these games. It'd be game specific, of course. But he needs to be out there as a legitimate rushing reserve when Henry's getting stopped. Otherwise, it's just Henry and essentially a 3rd down back, with no room for error.
I get the thought, but there's also only 1 ball to go around and we're already struggling to feed all of the mouths with any modicum of consistency

What did he say in the video, I don’t really want to watch it?
Basically it was this: so uhh yeah, about that game last night. Definitely a rough night at the office. Usually you have an idea why you lost, but this one..............................I don't really have the words. Maybe it's just me, but it just feels tone deaf.

That’s just how he is. But the thing that pisses me off is even if we stopped that last 4th down it would not have mattered because he committed a penalty and still got burned

Oh no, I've been right there with you since 2023 onward. I go back to the Browns and Steelers games (and even the Chiefs and Eagles games) and see why we've struggled against those teams. As for our pass-rush, since the Suggs-Dumervil days, we really haven't had that playmaker at pass-rusher.

I’m so sick of Oweh and Ojabo, and so far unfair or not Mike Green hasn’t done anything , he got burned on that option play

I change my mind about trying Ben Cleveland… just blow the trenches up and devote a ton of resources to it in the offseason because I don’t think it’s getting better

We need to follow what Pitt did the last 2 years, one draft of all o line and the next of all d line. It’s payed off for them

We’ve been drafting undersized athletes on the line, it’s a shame we’ve invested so much because linderbaum almost needs to be extended, and he’s the ultimate undersized athletic lineman, but I don’t think he’s the problem.

The one OL we have who isn’t in that category, is ass awful and doesn’t play to his size.

He could have signed fucking Clowney who knows our system but no no lets not do that. We dont need the pass rushing help!!!!!!!!

Fuck!
Clowney doesnt know our system. This shit that orr is running isnt what we did when clowney was here. Also, clowney wouldnt be as productive here anymore. Would help with the run game though

CJ is more of what used to be called a strong safety but that's probably Starks best role too. I thought Lowry looked promising in preseason but they seem reluctant to try him for some reason.

If Lowry played deeper and Starks closer to the the line, that could free up Hamilton too.

Really, I just think that any money we spend should be going towards big guys not more little ones.
Cj is asssssss

I don't know that I can categorize the OL draftees, particularly on the interior, as undersized. In recent years, we've drafted players that measured in at the Combine at:

Ben Cleveland - 6'6, 343 lbs
Andrew Vorhees - 6'6, 310 lbs
Malaesala Aumavae–Laulu - 6'5 1/2, 317 lbs
Nick Samac - 6'3, 307 lbs
Emery Jones - 6'5, 315 lbs
Garrett Dellinger - 6'4, 325 lbs

They've just been underpowered or have struggled technically. I do agree in that the sense that our interior OL scouting has been flat out poor.

And it can't be that Madubuike is the key piece that makes it all go but maybe it actually is...
We kinda had similar issues when Brandon Williams was out. Even though Brandon Williams is a 0 technique linemen, him taking on two blockers makes a massive difference to the DLine. Kinda makes me think about Michael Pierce retiring as well and how that impacted things. Tbh though, I think Mads being there would've helped, but they still likely would've been successful running the Football. That Lions offensive line is really that good.

Gotta admit, that was tough for him though. He was there, he saw it unfolding but unless someone else had another assignment, he was never gonna get to gibbs

We tried with ojabo and odefe and now mike green and peebles so its not like edc and staff not trying. We grabbed tyler, resigned stanley and got rr in 2nd! Im unaware of the guards though but anyway, we have been trying… shit just havent been working out. We cant hit on every draft pick even though it feels like we have

Back-to-back plays defensively from last night. I've slowed these down to 75% of their play speed for clarity.

Defensive backs are in thirds. Both linebackers and Kyle Hamilton commit to the toss, understandably so. I want you to watch Marlon Humphrey here. Bites on the perceived Jared Goff scramble, which Travis Jones has covered. Sprints to the delayed corner-route by Sam LaPorta, which Malaki Starks has covered. Turns to the in-route by Amon-Ra St. Brown, which Roquan Smith can't recover to. That's three separate directions in one zone.

RD-PC2-W3'25-A22S.gif

Cover 1. Hamilton as the single-high. Teddye Buchanan on the middle-hook. LaPorta stays to pass block, which leaves Starks without an assignment. Starks paths in front of Chidobe Awuzie, who has to work over him to get to Kalif Raymond. Meaning Starks now can't reverse to help on the cross-route by Jameson Williams, which is sprung free by Smith and Nate Wiggins running into each other. Hamilton has to freeze because there are now two threats towards the end zone. Funnily enough, Williams being the more open of the two.

And every single route ends up being open. Chaos. This is chaos. It feels like our defenders genuinely are unsure of how to layer their pathing based on their teammates working those same areas. These feel like training camp miscues with a roster full of new teammates.

Yea I agree for the most part, but Cole Jackson was pointing out how he did a poor job of setting the edge in general even if it was just going to be an end around

The reason you haven't won a SB is because EDC drafted these guys as iOL, DL, and EDGE in the Lamar era.

2019
Jaylon Ferguson (truly terrible, RIP)
Daylon Mack (truly terrible)
Ben Powers (ceiling is low end starter and only got one year out of him)

2020
Justin Madabuike (very good player, Likely overpaid but what can you do)
Tyree Phillips (truly terrible)
Ben Bredeson (was shipped out immediately)
Broderick Washington (ceiling is a low end starter but we've got some years out of him)

2021
Odafe Oweh (total bust for a first round pick. Disciplined edge setter, Uber athlete that cant turn that athleticism into pass rush to save his life. Had no sacks his senior year of college...)
Ben Cleveland (Truly terrible)
Daelin Hayes (Truly terrible)

2022
Tyler Linderbaum (Very good player deserving of an extension)
David Ojabo (Maybe the worst name on this list)
Travis Jones (Ceiling is a solid starter, probably gone next year)
Daniel Faalele (I guess, couldn't make it at OT, plays RG at low end starter level)

2023
Tavius Robinson (Not a pass rusher. Dont need an Oweh and a Robinson)
Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu (Truly terrible)
Andrew Vorhees (Truly terrible and was injured!)

2024
Adisa Isaac (Ghost and no one on this board would've drafted him in the 3rd)
Nick Samac (Truly terrible)

2025
Mike Green (remains to be seen but very likely will not be TJ Watt or even Elvis Dumervil)
Emery Jones (dumbass pick)
Aeneas Peebles (scrappy undersized guy that will get a few snaps in the rotation)
Garrett Dellinger (Truly terrible and already gone)

These are your most important positions! I didn't do OT because we've had Stanley since the Ozzie days. If you want to do that, just add Orlando Brown, Rosengarten and Vinson.

But look at that, that's embarrassing drafting. Then when you do that and pay Earl Thomas and Marcus Williams huge contracts.... what are you even doing man?
