Coaching Carousel 2026

I understand Stefanski. He was about to be a finalist here and probably would have been elsewhere too. I think he had a real argument for some semblance of 'best available' at the time and I think he's a good fit there.

Apparently Hafley just blew away the Dolphins' brass.

Nagy is quite questionable to me. Feels like that's solely related to developing Cam Ward.

I understand Stefanski for the Falcons… tbh he wasn’t a great for here anyways.

Saleh's now been officially interviewed.

So all the reported interviews have now happened.
All 15 of them.

Stefanski the only one off the board. Although possible that Nagy might join him soon.

If there's interest in Davis Webb, Vance Joseph or Klint Kubiak, those in-person final interviews will have to wait until next Monday at the earliest.

Ravens have had 1 in-person interview with a minority candidate, Mike McDaniel, so at least one of the finalists (not including McDaniel) will be a minority candidate to satisfy the rooney rule: Weaver, Flores, Joseph, Saleh and Scheelhaase are the other minority candidates who were virtually interviewed

Why does McDaniel count? The second will probably be Weaver.

Especially when you are getting a brand new stadium in Nashville as well. Like cool, new stadium that I personally didn't think the Titans needed but Matt Nagy is supposed to be the guy to welcome in that new stadium? Yikes.

I would hate to be a Titans fan… that is not an inspiring hire. I would much rather then go with one of the two youngsters if I was a fan.

to me it's clearly the 2nd best job out there

I agree here.

Saleh was the one I felt least confident about but it's a guess anyways so why not. Weaver would have been my alternate choice.

I did hear that Scheelhaase was impressive, but probably not going to be a finalist. But that was also before Stefanski took the Atlanta job, so there's another open spot there that he could easily fill.

Why did you feel like he was the least confident coach you confident in???

I think that's accurate but if Stefanski was a top 5 candidate do you think they still go with a top 5 or just go with top 4.

If Stefanski was in the top 5 and got hired you just move on to your top 4.

It sounds like they talked to Marcus Freeman as well, but not necessarily a formal interview. Sounds like they wanted to assess interest but also just talk about some of the things that are working for that program.

They wanted to do the same with Cignetti but him playing tomorrow has meant that hasn't happened.

i did see some rumours about them talking to freeman earlier in the week

The Steelers interviewing Mike McCarthy lol.... "Hey Aaron, want to come back and reunite with Mike McCarthy?"

he's been a buzzy guy since before they had Parsons though
been constantly talked about as a guy for at least a couple of years

wild though that with all the qualified minority coaches, the Dolphins are likely doing sham in-person interviews with Kelvin Sheppard and Patrick Graham just to satisfy the rooney rule

i wonder if a bunch of the more qualified guys flat out refused knowing it was just a box-ticking exercise

but also, as highly thought of as hafley is, a little funky that their new GM is just hiring the guy he knows the best - doesnt say much for the hiring process
I don't imagine minority coaches would turn it down.

Even if they felt like it was a sham, there's still...

1. Opportunities to interview and get experience. 2. A chance they blow the team away and force a reverse on a seemingly made decision. And 3. They'll put their name into the circle and potentially be recommended for interviews in the future.

Even if they don't have a prayer to get the job, it's still valuable to at least go through with it.

I do wonder if there's any urgency to fill the HC spot just to ensure you're able to get your preferred staff.

I think I saw Bill Callahan is following Stefanski to Atlanta and I believe he's a pretty well respected name in the OL coaching game.

Obviously getting a great HC candidate trumps all, but as we saw many times under Harbaugh- those positional coaches may not receive the same spotlight as coordinators, but they're still quite vital.

That's definitely part of the consideration. It kind of is what it is if your preferred guy is still coaching, and you at least have an idea of what his planned staff is based on the initial interview. But if someone comes out and kills their interview next week AND has their staff lined up and ready to go, it gives that guy a leg up.

Seems they could completely redo the timing of this whole process but NFL gonna NFL.

there has always been an issue hiring coaches currently in the playoffs going back to atleast the Patriots first couple super bowls where BB was able to keep his same staff together. There have been some changes but still the advantage goes to teams that have been eliminated.

Multiple changes could be made.

On the flip side, if a team makes it far and then loses their coach, there’s slim pickings for who they can backfill with. The whole process is full of disadvantages.

Without knowing for sure, I would presume that anybody who is a serious contender for a HC gig has at least a semblance of a coaching staff they would bring in, and probably have reached out to those guys already. These guys all work in their own little networks most of the time.

Thought this was interesting, with Cole Jackson giving his top 5 and who he thinks they would bring in for their staff.
