He had like a $7M cap hit so I can see why a release was the next best thing.
Wow, I didn’t see this coming during the season. I had a feeling he would be someplace else last season, since there were talks of a trade at some point in the offseason.

The thing is... This is an Ozzie Newsome move all the way though. This is something he'd do. Released veteran that still has potential for bounce back. He'd be expensive, but I could see it happening.
I'm neither for nor against it.

I think it's going to come down to either us or Oakland. Oakland for obvious reasons. Doesn't have to move, the defense is really talented when healthy without him, could turn Oakland into a juggernaut as a whole.
Can't see Dallas or Houston. Both are tight for money and I think he wants the chance to win. Carolina would be a win now team, but they have some important holes to fill next offseason and I'm not sure they'd want to take away from some future capital to do so.. Plus, they've been pretty bad at drafting the past few seasons.
With regards to us, he liked playing under Jim Harbaugh, so I think he'd be considering us for that reason. We have one weakness on the defense when it's entirely healthy: Inside linebacker #2, and a change of scenery could make his life easier. That move could turn us into an elite defense next season if he returns to form in any capacity. Sure, we are limited for cash at the moment, but the niners had to eat money to release him as well. I could see us doing this on a backloaded deal.

So I doubt he's got a deal now. Bowman is a guy who will want to survey the playing field. I see this as similar to the Maclin situation

Nah, he is healthy and still good. They are doing some strange things over there, I guess Shanahan's vision does not include him. It's a loss for Foster, too.

Along with CJ, Bowman is one of the most cerebral defensive players in the league too. He’s lost a step or two because of injury but his high Football iq makes him an incredibly effective player still and he has enough time left to return to form.
I’m sorry, this move has Ozzie written all over it. I’d be more surprise if we don’t try to bring him in for a visit

He's also from Maryland so hopefully if Ozzie came a knocking, he would love the idea of playing for his hometown team.
I meant he's not the same athlete or that best linebacker in the league due to his coverage, from what I caught, but he's still an extremely high end player.
He had a good bit of guaranteed money left, though, so... surprising, to say the least.

He actually asked to be released. Not sure how the money side of things works but he may have forfeited the guaranteed bit - he'll get paid elsewhere. No sense in riding a Niners bench more and more, he's 29 and needs to try to get to the dance again. Not much time left.
