Around the NFL: News and Rumors

Looks like Bruce Arians is putting together a Cardinals South as his coaching staff looks very similar to what he had in Arizona.

- Todd Bowles will serve as Defensive Coordinator(wonder how the switch to the 3-4 will work?)
- Byron Leftwich will be the passing game coordinator
- Former Cardinals OC under Arians Harold Goodwin will be the run game coordinator.

NFL initially told Buccaneers no compensation needed to hire Bruce Arians. But Cards made late argument to NFL that they held Arians’ rights. Rather than having a protracted dispute, Bucs sent a 6th-round pick to Arizona for Arians’ rights and a 7th-round pick, per source.

The Cleveland Browns look to have their man for Head Coach. It seems they don't want to risk losing Freddie Kitchens to someone else and will promote him to Head Coach themselves.

Kitchens interviewed for the head coaching job on Monday and Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports that there’s a “good chance” that he winds up getting the position. Per the report, the team has already asked several members of the coaching staff to stay on board.

i can't imagine this is the best decision for Cleveland. Sure it worked well for them this season, but let's not forget that he was the QB coach before Hugh Jackson was fired. It's a lot different being a head coach then it is being a coordinator.

Very true, and right now with the current trend being Offensive Coordinators becoming Head Coaches they didn't want to risk it. If he stayed on as OC to whoever was Head Coach, good chance they lose him to someone else for 2020. They are trying to get ahead of the curve so to speak and hire him before anyone else has a chance.

He was the RB coach

And I really think this is the only option they really had- they’d have been looking at offensive gurus all around the league but they had one of their own in house who evidently interviewed well and showed the ability to gameplan and play all that hue Jackson never did - it’s a step up for sure but John Dorseys not an idiot

And most importantly of all he’s shown already a good working relationship with baker and has shown an ability to develop Baker and build around him too

What? How are you gonna say you really like lafluer but say this one is questionable?

LaFleur has more experience. He was the OC of both the Rams and the Titans as well as being the qb coach in both Atlanta and Washington. He was a big part of putting the game plans in place in Las Angeles even though he didn’t call plays, according to McVay.

That’s why I like the hire the LaFleur hire and not the Kitchens hire. I understand why Cleveland did it though. This is not even remotely similar to the kitchens hire.

Apparently a/some candidates withdrew because they weren't willing to retain Kitchens. You're right Kitchens hasn't even a full season as OC under his belt, even though his scheme worked perfectly. And now he's their HC.

According to a report I saw they couldn't stand each other. But he's done a great job there as HC. haha even harder they just fired Williams. Gotta feel for him

not really - he's a trash person with a garbage defensive scheme who had the benefit of getting to be the guy who took over from Hue Jackson

Kubiak to take Broncos OC duties under Fangio

Broncos hired Gary Kubiak as offensive coordinator.

Kubiak spent the last two years in Denver's front office after a brief retirement due to health reasons. He has no desire to be a head coach anymore and simply just wants to run an offense. GM John Elway prioritized keeping Kubiak as part of his head-coach search, which landed him on Bears DC Vic Fangio on Wednesday. It will be Fangio running the overall team and the defense while Kubiak focuses on the offense. Kubiak has long been a strong play-caller.
