Around the NFL: News and Rumors

I wonder when the trade details regarding Marcus Peters will be out. We knew right away all the details about Alex Smith being traded. Yet we know nothing about what the Rams gave up to get Peters.
I agree, I am very interested in the details and have found nothing.

Maybe they trust Bortles in terms of not losing games for them and bet on their D and strong running game to take them through playoffs, while having their eyes set on some of the 2017 freshman/sophomore quarterbacks to draft in 2-3 years time?

2-3 years is too long given that they've already had 1 year of this defence together - they arent all gonna be there in 2 years time - they are absolutely in win now mode which means they've got the next 2 years guaranteed to do it (obviously good drafting extends that period) so they have to get a qb in place that they believe can win the superbowl and yes they got to the championship game but i think through the season bortles has demonstrated he wont get them to the promised land...

that young qb has to come now or next year - preferably now so that they can evaluate them in their own building for the year...

You don't have to necessarily get one this year though or at the least don't have to spend a first on a QB and gives you more flexibility in the first to fill a need at another position. There could be a mid round guy they like, thinking they are hoping to find a Jimmy G in the second round that can be the guy long term that they can develop.

my problem is that their biggest hole is quite obviously at qb - they have a workhorse rb, they have a couple of promising oline, they have a nice stable of receivers, they have an incredible Dline and pass rush, they have one of the best linebacker groups in the league and their outside corners and safeties are ridiculous

their only holes are at tight end and qb... so they have to address it now before they start losing pieces of that defence (especially now that their cap space will be much less cushy)

I actually like the move of locking up Bortles. They were on the verge of guaranteeing him $19M in a couple of weeks if they didn't make a decision on him. Instead, they added a little over $7M guaranteed to lock him up for 2 more years if he happens to have turned into the QB that showed up in 2017. If it doesn't work out, I'd guess it's structured when you can get out of it after the season if you want.

for me it's the right move only if they pick up a qb high in the draft...
if they stand pat then i think it will ultimately hold them back...

You can keep lot of your defense if you hit on a rookie QB

bortles wasnt as bad as many are making him out to be, when he played mobile and used his feet he made things happen(see: entire playoff run) and looking at the numbers he was pretty efficient, they could do much better but they could also do much worse. his career statline looks quite a bit like joe flaccos but with some pretty solid rushing numbers, and in the playoffs when they began designing qb runs he looked far better. i see the jags in the same light as the ravens around 2010 when we signed boldin and our offensive weaponry began to heat up, great defense, great run game, efficient qb with sporadic moments of big play and bonehead play, some solid but not spectacular pass catchers, the one difference is that we had an excellent OL up until 2013 and the jags OL needs work. and with this contract, the jags can actually make moves, unlike the ravens when they signed flacco.

i see nothing wrong with the bortles signing, and if the playbook is tailored to his skillset then he can be efficient enough to win, as long as you arent asking him to win a shootout with brady.

id argue he had a fairly awful game 1 of the playoffs and his tape through the regular season was inconsistent at best - he's a liability waiting to happen so often - the problem for the jags is he's not a game manager so they cant trust him - he's either good or he's imploding and unfortunately its not much better than 50/50 for which bortles turns up...

the jags won a lot of games in spite of bortles

They're not picking high enough this year. Bortles is far better than anybody they can get in the draft.

i dont mean the player has to start over bortles - i just mean that with the way bortles' contract is structured the jags also dont see him as the future clearly - i think they have to take a qb high (maybe a flier on jackson in round 1 - i would not like that move or a 2nd round guy) and then they can sit him for a year (or even 2 or maybe even 3 depending on bortles play)

but they cant just not bring in another qb and have yet another year where the 2 qbs in their building are blake bortles and chad henne - that's literally tempting fate

its what the idiot skins should have done two years ago, but Bruce Allen wouldn't have it. Best name for the skin is the Potomac Drainage Basin.

btw, the season he first became starter he was willing to sign a 3 yr 48m deal with half guaranteed. Oh well, they screwed that up big time. Not surprising.

Fun fact from a director at NFL Network:
"Dolphins gear all marked down on Jarvis Landry's official apparel shop. Coincidence or sign of things to come? $60 hoodies down to $20. This is a CLEARANCE sale"

that's definitely a sign. His destination will be very interesting. Hoping he lands with a team that is picking in front of us. Hint: Bears

i wonder if it could be a case of the dolphins knowing they cant keep him franchised so he's gone whatever happens because he doesnt want a long-term deal - it could be a trade or them rescinding the tag at some point (i was about to suggest they might try and spite him by holding him out of the first wave of free agency and then dropping him later on - a bit like the josh norman situation but then i realised the dolphins are so hard up in cap space that they cant afford to be vindictive)

This could work in reverse. If he doesn't sign the tag and isn't traded, the Dolphins will have less money to spend in free agency (not sure if he has signed the tag yet, assuming not)

Kind of like the Redskins not tagging Cousins. The reason here is Cousins won't sign the tag and will end up holding them hostage in free agency.

oh i think the dolphins know he wont sign the tag so they are trying to get him traded and if they cant get him traded by maybe the start of the tampering period they'll rescind the tag and save themselves the cap space (that they can hardly afford anyway)

I agree, that is probably what will happen.

taking on that franchise tag is the worst possible outcome for them because it's a 1 year guaranteed deal essentially so counts all at once and they cant reduce the cap hit - for them to take on the tag they'd have to do a lot of cutting

Per Rapsheet: The Vikings are not expected to franchise tag QB Case Keenum and he’s slated to hit free agency, per sources with knowledge of the team’s thinking. Barring a change of heart, Minnesota joins the fray for a starting QB… and will make these next few weeks fascinating.

got to think they believe they are gonna get kirk or maybe give teddy a contract

It all depends on how The Eagles feel about Carson Wentz recovery but I wouldn't rule out The Vikings being interested in trading for Nick Foles. Their offensive coordinator was Foles quarterback coach when The Eagles won the super bowl so it makes sense.

This would make a lot of sense, just depends on what the Eagles want for him. Foles isn't someone I would extend for too much money.
