Around the NFL: News and Rumors

For me I'd much rather see coaches have the ability to challenge DPI and make it reviewable as those are way too much of a judgement call. Refs call it on the slighest contact, but allow so much contact but no flag.

Sources: The #Dolphins have given franchise tagged WR Jarvis Landry and his representative permission to seek and facilitate a trade. It will take cooperation from all parties.

My question would be whether any team will bite given that the dolphins may have to rescind the tag and let him hit free agency anyway... or it forces the dolphins to keep a player they can’t really afford to keep at that price which means other players at different positions will be available

Yeah, he’s not going to be traded, but he will hit free agency

i just dont see teams being prepared to give landry 16 mill cap space - i could maybe see a 16 mill yearly/avg but it would be backloaded and structured so that the last couple of years of the contract were get outable and not fully guaranteed - no way a team takes on landry with a 16 mill 1 year guaranteed cap hit...

so the only way this trade happens is if they can pre-negotiate a long-term deal - but that might not be in a team's interest because they can just let him hit free agency and offer him the same deal (because a deal that landry will agree to i.e. a very large one is the only way he gets traded in the first place)

so i think you're right that he hits free agency - the dolphins really only have 10 days to trade him too because they'll need the cap space back from landry's contract to enter free agency with some flexibility

Latest Free Agent News:

- The Vikings have emerged as favorites at the combine to land Kirk Cousins. We know the Jets are all in on him as well, but as for the Broncos... maybe not. Elway has said that WR Demaryius Thomas($12M), WR Emmanuel Sanders($10M) and OT Menelik Watson($7.2M) will all be back in 2018. Elway did say that he wasn't sure Talib($12M) and RB CJ Anderson($4.5M) would be back. It seems Elway is not doing much cap clearing to prepare for another free agent QB run.

- As for Jarvis Landry.... The Bears are emerging as a trade partner for the Dolphins. Apparently a deal wouldn't be worked out long term contract wise but they are comfortable with him playing on the $16M tag for this season. It is being reported that he will soon be signing his tender which is required for a trade to go through. Apparently they are multiple teams interested in acquiring Landry.

- The 49ers are going to be suitors for Rams CB Trumaine Johnson after not getting Marcus Peters. With Peters now in as Trumaine's replacement, the Raiders and 49ers are going to be Trumaine's top pursuers it seems.

- Sticking to the NFC West, the Seahawks are trying to trade DE Michael Bennett, even though most teams know he'll be released anyway.

- Patriots RB Dion Lewis is expected to garner a ton of interest on the open market, and Mike Florio says at least 6-7 teams are interested. It seems he is destined to play elsewhere in 2018.

that being said - elway also indicated that he's confident they can get the right qb in the building (and this is 2nd hand so i cant confirm but he seemed to allude to that being through free agency) so maybe he thinks they can clear enough cap room by getting rid of Talib and Anderson (sounds like they are both definitely gone) - if not cousins then i dont know which free agent qb it is that elway has got his eyes on but i think they will have enough cap space to go after him if they want but it will come down to cousins' preference and im not sure that the broncos are more attractive financially than the jets or anywhere near as competitive as the vikings

interestingly on that front it also sounds like the broncos have essentially sealed a trade for su'a cravens with washington and they are just finalising the compensation

McCarron / Teddy?

Maybe he still trusts Brock? McCarron and Bridgewater are definitely better than him.

I dunno I think Elway deep down still thinks he’s infallible and can pull off the Payton Manning free agency pitch again and have cousins come in the exact same way - I just think he’s deluding himself at this point tbh

Rams trade Robert Quinn to Dolphins. Dolphins send a 4th Rounder and the teams swap 6th round picks.

Wow.......

Currently the Dolphins sit almost $20M over the salary cap with the addition of Quinn's $11M cap hit for 2018. Looking at their cap hits for 2018 on spotrac, they may be beginning the process of rebuilding and dumping a ton of salary this year. I wonder how close they are to trading Landry, seems as if the Bears were clearing cap recently to fit him in, we know the Browns have the cap space.

I’m definitely rooting for the Bears. That should be obvious.

Idk about you guys, but I’d totally be down to trade for Landry if a long term deal could be decided upon when he’s traded. I wonder if we are one of the teams that inquired the dolphins about him.

Former Panthers Safety Kurt Coleman agrees to 3 year deal with the Saints. Saints were losing S Kenny Vaccaro to FA.

Well they don’t have to trade him - they just have to get rid of him - problem is it’s expected that Landry signs the tag this week which means that if the rest of the nfl wants to sabotage the dolphins they could all withdraw trade offers and force the dolphins into cap oblivion

If Landry signs the tag the dolphins must know they have a guaranteed trade partner or they’re screwed

So apparently the Bears and Dolphins were discussing a big trade as part of the deal that would see Landry land in Chicago. The trade would have been this, Bears trade the 8th Pick and RB Jordan Howard to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the 11th Pick and Jarvis Landry. Now sources are saying that trade won't happen.

That would have been interesting if it happened and if it still somehow ended up happening. Dolphins moving up to 8 would have moved them up closer to make another trade up to get a QB in the top 5.
