Oh, I know. It’s just that we were so close last year that I’ve had hope that if we could just get the right pieces in the right places it might put us over the top. Instead, it seems like we will end up just adding more guys that fit into the “yeah, he’s alright” category instead of adding some guys who could take us to the next level.
Now knowing the prices, what moves out there that have happened so far would you have liked to see us make?

Literally the only deal out there that I’m personally disappointed in is Ronald Darby.

Otherwise, I see a bunch of overpays and guys that won’t live to see the end of their contracts.

I don’t have a specific move in mind, I just thought we might make a few notable moves here and there to help get us over the hump. I guess we will just see what happens down the line.

Many of the players signed yesterday and today won't up being "the right pieces" for their teams. They'll just be highly paid, not highly producing.

Many of the veterans we signed who made impacts were signed much later in the offseason.

But that makes no sense in this case. There’s still a ton of available options out there at basically every other position than RB. FA does not end after 24 hours. Still plenty of time to make moves and we will. We haven’t “settled” for anything to this point.

Which we will. Just not yesterday, possibly not today, and likely not until later in the offseason when the prices come down.

can you also say we’re not getting Henry? You’re our good luck charm

It feels like every other team is making moves in free agency but us.
A year ago our qb demanded a traded. We have our qb. We have all our picks and we re-signed our best FA. Will be getting a healthy Marcus Williams and Humphrey back. We're not in a bad position. And bad teams usually make the most noise early. Saw something where Williams is the only FA from his class who wasn't cut, restructured, and something else of 11 players I think signed big deals.

My personal position by position thoughts on Ravens free agency...

QB - maybe sign a cheap vet later in the process, if Huntley's market never materializes he might return to compete
RB - really left to Henry of the big names, will add at least one vet but may be more draft centric
WR - not really a need but worth keeping an eye on the market if it stays this slow, will add a Treadwell-type at a minimum
TE - no need
OL - guessing we'll draft heavy here, maybe add a Mustipher type to add depth and competition
DL - hopefully Urban is back, but would be a cheap depth add if not him
OLB - targeting Clowney but have a bevy of vet options available if not him
ILB - seems like the classic position where you let Simpson take first crack at it and add in camp if you need to
CB - pending price, may be worth adding an outside CB
S - pending price, may be worth adding S3

So basically in my eyes...

RB, OLB, and DB are positions you probably look to add now

QB, WR, OL, DL, and ILB are positions where you keep tabs and strike if there's a good deal, but may be more likely to be hit in the later phases of FA

i think the thing at WR is regardless of whether we add anyone to compete for actual WR snaps (and i think we will because we've got no one beyond the top 3 and it's a questionable top 3) - we need guys who can compete for WR 5 and 6... Tylan's the favourite for the returner spot right now but he's also one of the better gunners on the roster so we have holes that you'd normally fill with WRs and or CBs there too

would be shocked if we're not adding at least 1 guy who we'd hope could give us valuable WR snaps
would be even more shocked if we're not adding at least 1 guy who has back of the 53 man roster special teams value

OL we may look at someone who was in a similar situation to john simpson last offseason (although we acquired him earlier than free agency) - someone like dalton risner as a guy who we can sign for super cheap who has average starter level upside if put in a good system with talent around him - but not looking at a big signing on the OL - no imminent sign of a Morgan Moses cut which means we really only have true holes at guard (although i cant imagine we pass up on this OT draft class if there's someone we like)

id be surprised if we didnt try and find someone to come in at outside CB but not sure there's many Ronald Darby-esque guys out there (that was a pretty lucky situation last year) - and i cant imagine they think JAD is reliable or ready to play significant snaps - and we wont find reliable outside CB play with any potential year 1 impact outside of the first 2 (maybe 3 at a push) rounds in this class

my guess is we'll wait on EDGE - Clowney's got form for not signing early, and the ravens have form for not signing guys early recently either - not sure it's a market that's awash with guys who'd be as obvious fits as Clowney was last year but also notable we havent cut Bowser yet (surprisingly)

the upshot of all this being... i dont think we're signing anyone in this first phase unless it's a derrick henry signing or if michael onwenu's price magically isnt close to robert hunt's

Eh yes and no. Yes it is a deep free agency class at the position but he also had 7 picks last year. Maybe there is some regression there but that production is definitely tough to replace. Darby is probably second for me since solid corners are tough to find. RB isn’t worth much to me even though I like Gus and Duvernay was a return specialist/gadget guy for the offense.

INTs and turnovers are notably luck-based year-to-year - obviously there's skill to it but a lot of it is luck and Geno was pretty lucky this year

not saying he was a liability, but i think if he'd dropped 3 of those picks that went straight to him and didnt steal the one he stole from brandon stephens, we'd be thinking he was eminently replaceable

we thought that last year and then got nearly 10 sacks each from Clowney and KVN, got decent play from cast-off guys in the secondary in Darby and Maulet, got average starter level guard play from Simpson etc. etc. etc.
