Timmy Williams vs Von Miller

Willbacker

Ravens Ring of Honor
I have a feeling that was by design.

Either they wanted him to work specifically on one thing... like they know he can win outside with burst/bend/speed bc hes doing in practice against our starters, so no need to see him do it against their 3rd stringers. Work on your weakness type deal.

He also seemed almost entirely consumed with not losing the edge in the event of a run to his side.... which i think slowed him down the rest of the game.

With that 3rd unit he played like a starting, 3 down player.... which hes never done in meaningful football and wont do for us this season especially. I have a feeling that they already know he can come in on 3rd down and get after it; so no need to really put reps toward that and put it on film. But thats all hes gonna have to do for us in the regular season.

Not worried a bit.

He totally lost the edge on the 1st play of the 3rd qtr but I wasn't able to watch too much more after that.

Tim Williams looked lost on the field., His poor performance had nothing to do with any gut. I thought he looked OK physically but he was clearly trying to absorb everything happening around him and he clearly didn't know how to react and was slow to react when he should've attacked. It's to be expected because that was an issue we saw from him in college at times, especially the National Championship game. This isn't something new. He will take some time to get adjusted to the NFL speed or he will simply not pan out as a player. He's another Arthur Brown in that aspect but I have higher hopes for him than Arthur Brown.

Arthur brown supposedly didn't care. I don't think that's an issue with Tim, he clearly has a passion for football, that was a question that arose just from watching his nonchalant college play

Brown had a lot of questions. I know people said he didn't care, and perhaps that caused him to look lost on the field. Maybe he didn't care because he couldn't break things down and get good at it and simply didn't have the football IQ to play in the NFL. That's also possible. I'm not saying he's [Williams] another Brown, but there's a similarity in that both guys looked lost on the football field when the lights were on. I won't judge Tim Williams yet. I think they're [Ravens] throwing a lot at him right now to get him acclimated. He should be pinning his ears back to rush the passer as a DPR in his rookie year. Not sure he'll get that chance but I feel good about him making this leap. I wouldn't worry about his weight, though. Suggs looked a lot worse at times in his career.

He should be pinning his ears back, but he did not appear to be able to very often, he was in on a lot of run downs, and his passing downs seemed like he was so scared to make a mistake.

I think he was scared to carry the rush deep and open a lane for the qb so he constantly stayed home but got lost in the sauce cutting inside

Yeah, that makes sense. I recall watching him go a bit too much up field in college and perhaps the coaches tried to fix that and he's probably thinking about it too much and it's causing him to think and not react and that's never going to be a recipe for success--especially as a pass rusher. I'm not at all worried about him. He could never develop, it's possible, but I think he's going to be a good one in time--maybe even this year.

Yea, thats what i was getting at.

After that rep, it seemed that totally consumed him and he devoted 100% of his focus and energy to ensuring it didnt happen again. Even on 3rd downs or obvious passing situations it seemed to me his 1st thought was to maintain the edge, and didnt seem to start his pass rush until the QB had completed his drop or the RB leaked into the opposite flat/engaged in a block.

And any time he did rush, i can only remember him using an inside move. It felt to me like a pre-determined effort to work on everything BUT rushing the edge. Like step 1, go prove you can set the edge - otherwise you're useless as anything other than a 3rd down rush specialist bc teams will just run at you.

Step 2, once youve proven you can be something other than a total liability against the run, put a reliable inside move on tape. I know he showed a decent inside counter in college, it was usually when he had put college tackles on skates outside, or they were so worried about his speed on the edge that they way over played it and the inside was wide open.

That's not going to happen nearly as frequently now... so show you can win inside when an NFL tackle is expecting inside, just based on your technique/power.

I may be looking too much into it.... but it seemed very much to me like the coaching staff asked him to specifically work on 1 or 2 things, and not just rely on what comes easy to him. They always talk about the more you can do - so im guessing they wanted to see if he could do more in a game situation.

Arthur wasn't physical enough. Nor wanted to work enough to learn the game. Timmy will eventually feel comfy at rush olb. However he needs to work on his upper body for the NFL. His legs and core are very strong. However is upper body is a little on the small side. And he is a little soft for a smaller linebacker. Usually 235lb rush OLBs and defensive ends are very very lean and muscular. Look at Bowser at 250lbs. Not to mention a better more even weight distribution would give him better balance and agility.

I do think his play weight and strength is a big problem. I'm not surprised he skipped the bench press at combine and pro day. I'm sure it would of been embarrassing. His burst off the snap and bend is top notch. If he looked anything like Bowser he would be very very comparable with Von Miller in every aspect. I always felt his burst off the snap and bend is very very close to Miller. But he is lacking in different areas of his skillset. Can't quite explain it but I'm sure his upper body has a lot to do with it. All the power he generates is coming from his legs and compensating. Wouldn't be surprised to see him take a redshirt year for most part to work on his upper body.
