The 2021 Offseason Thread

Lol for real, like I get the spirit of his argument, but let’s not even begin this debate, jimmy has been an absolute lock since we lost to the bills and our offseason began

Was watching an Edgar Allen film breakdown of Ferguson and couldn't help but think of you.

Let me tell you what I think. The only way a $43+/yr contract makes sense is to roll multiple years into this contract that is post TV and Union agreement. That is going to increase the cap allocation for each team substantially. So, 5 yrs down the road, 43M for a QB will look pedestrian.

I say we are going to lock Lamar up for a minimum of 7-8 yrs or even more if possible. After 2024, it'll begin to look manageable.
I think it will probably be 6 to 7 year extension, of course this is after next years 5th year option.

Fergie can go play Canadian football for all I care

Wish him the best but not looking good. All the praise from minicamps seems to have faded.

I mean he couldnt make cowboys practice squad as a cb.. i dnt see him making any real impact on our team. Hope he makes roster though

Was actually coming to post this. Hadn't heard anything about him until just now where they say he's doing well in camp. Would love for him to make the team. 6'4 athletic db is all I need to hear.

Man listen, if you think jimmy wasnt a lock to make team before this injury and probably still is, i dnt know what to tell you man.. maybe we not talking about the same jimmy smith.
We're not. You're talking about 25 year old Jimmy Smith, and I'm talking about 33 year old Jimmy Smith.
We are most certainly not talking about the same player.

I meant to start the season.

Why not? I've only read great reviews about his play. He seems to have leveled off lately per Zrebiec, but otherwise is still on the roster bubble. Here is a direct excerpt from Jeff's article:
"Young cornerback Chris Westry had a good start to camp and then leveled off a bit. However, he turned in a solid day. He denied Sammy Watkins on a deep pass, then a few plays later he got his hands on a pass intended for Deon Cain. Westry was considered a roster long shot when camp started, but he’s at least played his way onto the roster bubble".
Maybe they will. Without knowing all the details, the kind of injury players typically have that are comparable to this one typically don't result in 7-8 weeks being unavailable, which is what you would be saying it is if you put him on IR. If he has a setback or its a "severe" sprain, then maybe. Too early to tell, and we're 4 weeks away from needing to make that decision anyway.

He's not the shut down corner he was in his prime, but Jimmy is still an above average starting CB. There was no way he wasn't making the roster barring a season long injury. A young corner would have to look like Prime Time in practice to take that spot.
Yeah I don't think that's the case at all. He's not making much money, didn't make much money last year when he hit the market and didn't get barely any interest, and he's not getting younger or healthier. I very much agree he's an above average corner, but if others show better than him, that likely means they're above average corners also.

Finite roster space.

There is a zero percent chance I'd sign Lamar to a 7-8 year contract, unless it only has like 2-3 years of guarantees on it. A 30 year old Lamar Jackson is going to be a significantly different player than a 25 year old Lamar Jackson.

He was losing against an undrafted rookie.
Imagine that lmao. He’s really not worth a fuck, third season and he still can’t even attempt to do anything but get low and drive, and if that fails he has no problem taking a L til the whistle. He’s been out of shape and fat since he came into the league, low energy, low effort, he has obviously made zero efforts to develop his game.

Thank you. I agree with this completely. It’s not like he’ll be terrible without the crazy good freakish athleticism, I just don’t feel he’ll be deserving of Mahomes or Allen tier $$$ at that age once the athleticism is gone, unless he improves his mechanics and outside the numbers passing

it's bizarre that he's never developed because he's got hands like cinderblocks and has the power to move guys off their spot - just has never shown any of that potential to improve

Problem is his feet are like cinderblocks too

Ferguson is why you don't look at college production when drafting players. And Oweh is gonna show why you do look at physical traits and attitude when drafting high.
