The 2021 Offseason Thread

Ferguson is why you don't look at college production when drafting players. And Oweh is gonna show why you do look at physical traits and attitude when drafting high.

Biggest shutdown when someone brings up no sacks from Oweh last year? Jaylon Ferguson’s career sack record in college. Shuts ‘em up every time

There is a zero percent chance I'd sign Lamar to a 7-8 year contract, unless it only has like 2-3 years of guarantees on it. A 30 year old Lamar Jackson is going to be a significantly different player than a 25 year old Lamar Jackson.
Significantly better player in my view. It would be a mistake not to sign him to a long term deal.

Long term deal? Sure. A 4-5 year extension makes perfect sense. A 10 year in the mold of Mahomes makes no sense to me. He would have to show me that Lamar, the mostly pocket passer, who can no longer outrun defenses, can consistently beat good teams with his arm. Then I'd consider locking him until 35. We are not at that level yet.

This is the correct response. Solid gold here

Thank you. I agree with this completely. It’s not like he’ll be terrible without the crazy good freakish athleticism, I just don’t feel he’ll be deserving of Mahomes or Allen tier $$$ at that age once the athleticism is gone, unless he improves his mechanics and outside the numbers passing

Allen tier money eh..

Hot take: I think Allen has a bigger chance of breaking down than Lamar. The White Cam Newton. Fight me.

Josh Allen is most definitely not another Cam Newton :D :D I hope you’re right though. They do throw Allen at brick walls a ton for sure. Lamar runs quite a bit but he mostly runs in open space and not right into a brick wall of 11 players

The Lamar doubt is going through the roof here. Again. I'm disappointed that you guys still don't recognize how good this kid is and will be. I keep trying to reiterate that this is a guy that'll win multiple SBs here and there are those that still doubt his passing abilities? Come on guys! He's already getting better. The guy threw for 36 TDs one year removed from throwing 26 TDs. Just evaluate his passing efficiency with the limited weapons he had. I am firmly in the camp of signing Lamar for a really long term deal in between Allen and Mahomes. I say at least 7-8 yrs minimum. We need to maximize those years where the burden of 43M isn't as egregious as it sounds now and perhaps the next couple of years. However 3-4 yrs from now when guys like the Chargers kid are making 50M a year, it will seem like a discount.

I say all of this objectively setting aside my love for him as my child too. I am estranged with his mom and wouldn't make a dime from his contract. Just saying...

I love having Lamar as our QB, even with the covid issues.

But yeah, teams do plan against him in a fundamentally different way than pocket passers. Eventually, even if it's just due to getting older, he'll lose some of that insane athleticism. Then teams will focus mostly on stopping the pass. That offense will have to be entirely different than the current one, and teams won't play afraid of him taking off on every play. He'll probably still be good, but we won't know how older, mainly just passing Lamar will handle it.

Five years sounds good to me. It'll lock him up until he's about thirty, and then we can see where he and the offense is at.
