If your team is winning though you are by default considered a candidate, hence why the only real candidates at the moment are Mahomes, Lamar, Hurts, Burrow, and Tua as those are the 5 QBs playing best on teams that are winning. They are certainly not the top 5 QBs in football (well Tua is not the other 4 are though I would also argue about Hurts) but they are the 5 QBs playing best on teams that are winning.

Edit: basically Brady was in the MVP conversation for something like 15 years in a row because he was always winning. The only year he was not was his last year in NE when they snuck into the playoffs because they were not winning as much as normal.

I'm contesting the idea that MVP means you're considered a top 3-4 quarterback. Like you said- it's the top quarterback on a winning team. Plenty of really great quarterback seasons get passed over for MVP consideration because of poor records.
