Lamar Jackson, the Miscommunications, and the Refs

My major gripe is 13 carries for Henry. Feels like were trying to prove a point about Lamar that doesn’t need to be made. All the short stuff to Zay could be explosive , but I’d much rather have tried to get Henry in rhythm

They're the two time reigning SB champs and established best team in the land. And they got better this offseason. And despite all that and despite playing well below our capabilities, we should've won.

I had tremendously lower expectations. Now my expectations are this team can compete with the best.
Oh, I was just making a joke because it started with I'm happy and then ripped into the team.

I genuinely am not sure what happened on the blown coverage Worthy TD.

Both Williams and Hamilton seemingly stay down on the inside curl. It seems one of them likely have the deep quarter responsibility, because the linebackers were also there for the inside routes.

However, you have Brandon Stephens playing clear man coverage on the other side of the field.

Almost feels like Humphrey should have been in man AND a safety should have been over top, but the whole play just looks janky and it’s hard to tell who was in the wrong.

99% agree. Agreed with all but Monken was additionally unhelpful. Yes he was trying to do what the OL could handle but play action was working and he abandoned. He telegraphed the fuck out of run vs pass with usage of Hill vs Henry. He was very bad himself in addition to what you said.
I think we should have known in getting Henry that he's not a plus receiver and has little ability there outside of a swing pass, but not incorporating him will mean that teams will package accordingly and it's going to mean heavier boxes consistently.

Not to mention that if he was passing Worthy off, he did a poor job by allowing him to reach the sideline and not funneling him inside.

Random snippets of all 22 later and the offense really needs to work on disguise and personnel groupings. Justice Hill was on the field A LOT and only had 1 carry. When he was on the field, pass was telegraphed. Meanwhile, Lamar lines up under center and Henry deep in the backfield... it was outside zone much more often than not. If an idiot like me can pick up on those tendencies that easily, NFL teams can too. We need to get some variance in how we use those guys.

I will say up front that this was one of my biggest concerns with Henry. He just looks miscast out here based on game 1, but there's a long way to go.

Got to shout out the receiver group too. The stats may not back it up, but they were getting open late in the game when we started pushing the ball downfield. Hard to glean too much from the first half snaps because they were so heavily screen and scheme based, but I do absolutely see an opportunity for the passing game to get into a flow if/when the OL holds.

Looks like Wiggins only played 17 snaps. I don't think I saw getting picked on, maybe I'm wrong. Stephens was labelled as a FS? Interesting.

I had this terrible feeling that we weren't gonna punch it in for the TD at the very end.

Offense - Would like to see Andrews and Bateman be used more often. This OL is gonna need some time to gel and cut this stupid penalties. Part of me wants to be mad at Monken for spamming these screens and short throws, but I get it. Lamar has to make that throw with Zay. I'm not sure if Lamar was thinking Zay was gonna sit on that route or whatever. Likely is amazing (last play notwithstanding). That is all.

Defense - I guess this is what happens in your first game together with your starters and a first-time playcaller. Shout out to Trent Simpson though for a couple of key plays. He's the reason why we didn't pay Q***n.
Also, I'm not as worried about Andrews' performance last night nor about Orr's first time as a playcaller. I'm start ringing the alarms if we're still having these discussions by midseason. As for Roquan, this is prolly him when he sees #88 lol:

Final random all 22 thought - Travis Jones is a fucking dog. May not show up on the stat sheet but there was consistent interior pressure. Think the impact would be a lot more apparent against virtually any other team.

Stephens has been listed as a FS for years. The NFL is terrible at changing official position listings in their database.

I came away feeling very positive. Henry and Andrews will have their turns in the spotlight, especially when it gets cold. The Chiefs are going to drop 50 bombs on opponents with all that speed + Mahomes just getting better + Pacheco playing great. So considering some tough spots the D was put in I think they held up really well. Orr definitely had a better debut than McDonald did, those crossers were just elite speed + time enough in pocket + Mahomes throwing darts all night.

Agreed RG is an issue, I've felt all offseason Mekari is going to start 17 games this year. Once Rosengarden is up to speed move Mekari to RG imo.

The pass rush is there. The problem earlier in the game was the coverage behind it and how quickly the ball would get out. Oweh would have at least 1 sack if he had wrapped up.

Just need to get the OL settled

Offense got better as the game went on.

Wish we ran the ball with Henry. It’s why we brought him in.

Agreed. And the good thing is that it wasn't schemed pressure. It was dudes winning their matchups. Just hard to capitalize when you're playing a team that prides itself on getting the ball out as quickly as they do.

And still scored a TD and picked up a crucial short yardage down for us

I’m already done with Monken. Not as bad as Roman, but dude fuckin sucks
