Should have been the starter this week - idk why they stood him down so he wasn’t even the backup… odd decision that bit them in the ass

What’s funny is I’ve actually thought he’s been playing better this year (until this terrible game this week) - he’s been balling without the help of those elite receivers and that offence has had the lowest YAC numbers in the league this year

But down his top 3 WRs is tough to overcome

With an offensive line that is basically 1 LT and some scrubs. When we talk about a QB looking bad this year, I think in just about every case we can point to the weapons and go "um where are the good weapons/OLine"

Might have honestly saved their franchise. His contract was basically dooming them for the next 4 years (because of void years) but they have reportedly insured a significantly large portion of Watson's contract for injury and if that pays out they save a lot of cap space which suddenly means they are not as doomed as previously thought.
 
Hopefully now that Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers are reunited, they go off on the Steelers tonight. Need them to lose so we can start pulling away in the division. I hate we don't play them until Week 11, wish we played them sooner.

Wouldn’t be saving cap space - but would help the owner’s cash flow

Edit: just seen that it does provide some cap relief depending on the insurance policy they’ve got

Oh they are fucked lol. I saw your post and looked up to see if it was possible for them to get out of it and saw this article from CBS Sports. Basically, they are stuck with him due to how ridiculous that contract was. Just remember, the Broncos took on a $53M cap hit this year when they released Russell Wilson, the Browns dead cap would be more than double that.

Cutting Watson in 2025 is too cost prohibitive because of the two salary conversions and the treatment of future salary guarantees when this occurs. Cleveland's 2025 cap charges for Watson would increase by $99.835 million by releasing him conventionally. The Browns would have a whopping $172.77 million of dead money, which is a salary cap charge for a player no longer on a team's roster, relating to Watson. The collective $53.835 million of bonus proration from Watson's 2026 contract year and the two dummy/voiding contract years in 2027 and 2028 would accelerate into Cleveland's 2025 salary cap. Watson's fully guaranteed $46 million 2026 base salary would be also attributed to 2025 under the NFL's salary cap rules. Salary guarantees from future contract years accelerate onto the current year's salary cap when a player is released.

Releasing Watson in 2025 through a post-June 1 designation isn't feasible, either. The Browns would have $118.935 million of 2025 dead money. The $53.835 million of bonus proration from Watson's three additional contract years (the real 2026 year and the 2027 and 2028 dummy/voiding years) would be a 2026 cap charge. Since there isn't a before June 2 salary cap treatment distinction with salary guarantee acceleration, the $46 million guaranteed in 2026 would still be a 2025 cap charge.

It's conceivable Watson could be released in 2026 with a post-June 1 designation. The 2026 dead money would equal Watson's current $72.935 million cap number. The 2027 dead money would be $26.9 million of bonus proration from Watson's fake 2027 and 2028 contract years. Cleveland would have a $99.835 million 2027 cap charge by releasing Watson prior to June 2 in the traditional manner because the bonus proration from these two fake years would accelerate forward to Cleveland's 2026 books.

Oh they absolutely can’t cut him, nor would there be a point as his contract is fully guaranteed.

However if the reports are true and the team has a large portion of his contract insured against injury then they might actually save quite a bit of money which they need as they owe him most of that contract still in terms of cap hits.
