woof - tepper did not hold back here

i always find it weird when they make young coaches basically choose their own boss or help hire a GM who maybe isnt the boss... i get it when it's an experienced coach like Andy Reid or BB or Jon Gruden etc. but this seems odd

if they wanted to do it this way it feels like they should have hired the GM last year

especially as their draft picks and free agents have been pretty good this year

We'll have to see how the Steelers handle his $41M cap hit next year.

the bind that they're in is that if he doesnt play or stay then he's still counting 22m against the cap and they'd make only a 19m saving on top of that dead number

and they have a massive issue with cap this offseason with the salary cap likely not inflating like in previous years (in fact most likely significantly deflating) - their only real way out of this situation is to extend him but then they're extending a 38 yr old who's playing like a "big" drew brees and who's got a history of getting injured

The other interesting aspect... he's really not making that much in 2021. He's due $19M, with a $4M salary and a $15M roster bonus. So like it would be one thing if he was due like $30-35M in cash, because they could, rightfully, ask for a paycut. But asking for a paycut from $19M isn't likely to work.

My guess is they still do extend him for another year, try to convince him to like a non-guaranteed salary in 2022, and then give him a bonus they can prorate for two years. Like they'll try to turn his Option bonus into a signing bonus, maybe throw in a little more cash on the back end, and non-guarantee it. They can save at least like $5-6M against the cap that way.

I obviously hope they do nothing. I hope he plays it out with a $41M cap hit, because they won't be a contender under that scenario.

Regardless... there's practically no way I see him being back with the team and carrying a cap hit under ~$30M. $22.25M is dead money that can't be touched no matter what they do, and that's before they pay him anything. His cap hit is going to increase at least $6-7M (on a declining cap) no matter what if he returns.

Has Lawrence declared for the draft yet? Wouldn't it be funny if he stayed for his senior year?
Not really. I don't see what the purpose would be.

If he's doing so to avoid the Jags or the Jets, and I'm one of those teams, I'm just not drafting a QB then. I'll either trade the pick away and get a bunch of picks, or take BPA that's not a QB, and wait until 2022.

Like what would occur in 2021 where either of those teams are significantly better without drafting a QB? Especially true of Jacksonville. They could add like 2-3 studs in the draft and still be among the worst teams in the league.

Any team who wants Greg Roman? Come on Joe Douglas, he's the next piece to being the New York Ravens.
