The 2022 Offseason Thread

Here comes the copium!

I think we may be surprised by Roman. I seriously, SERIOUSLY don’t think he’s as incompetent as many people feel, he may be one dimensional, but with the right counsel he maybe can take his savant-like talents in the run game to the pass game, if he can do it then it’s just gotta click one day and the roster has to stay healthy.

if we get healthy and give Roman and Lamar a whole offseason to work on beating the blitz, I think we will. So that means multiple years in a row the offense/Lamar has massively improved on a weakness from before. Eventually we’re either gonna run out of shit to get exploited by, or we’re gonna run out of growth. So far evidence suggests the growth isn’t about to just stop.

ill go back to being chill after the draft and only if we draft Linderbaum, Faalele, and Salyer in 3 consecutive picks. F it. YOLO.

Time of Possession,
Ravens: 52 mins
Losers: 8 mins

Continuity is forced upon them. It’s in their blood. The Harbs mighty men army grows stronger by the day.

We need more warriors like Agent 89, if we hope to stand a chance.

i mean all he's really doing there is talking about personnel groupings - i agree i want to see less 21 and 22 personnel but - we also played with more 11 personnel than any of those other personnel groups by a country mile

i love steve but those complaints were from 2020 (not even this season) and specifically were about a personnel group rather than anything more tangible like kurt warner and dan orlovsky who were have criticised at various points route spacing and hot calls

We can do better than Roman but we can also do worse. Don’t let me remind you of Marc Trestman’s Magic Shop of Horrors or Jim Caldwell’s Cavaliers. Honestly we’ve had a lot of crap OCs here but TBF to Roman he has been sadly one of our better ones.

I’d love an upgrade if there is one, I just have no idea who would be better to replace him.

120% with that shit.

I want so badly to have some pass rushing freaks in our defensive front, but I’ll sacrifice anything on our defense to build up this OL quick, and I feel basically certain all3 of those guys become excellent in the NFL. Could totally be wrong but I’m super high on all 3

This says more about our OC hires than Romans greatness. Rumors say Kubiak was forced on him and didn't we pass over Kyle Shanahan for Trestman?

we passed on shanahan for kubiak not trestman

and those rumours about being forced were clearly bullshit lol - harbs wouldnt still be here if the front office didnt trust him to put together his coaching staff and he wouldnt want to be here if those things happened too - it's always been one of those obviously made up ghost stories that people who want to disparage harbs bandy about

You're right they had their moments, but why did they stop? Even before Lamar got hurt. All I recall are those quick side passes to Brown or a RB when they got immediately buried. I grew to hate that call.
before Lamar was hurt or atleast up until the bye week Lamar had close to if not the best air yards per attempt in the league. It was far more than just WR screen to Hollywood.

Don’t forget Harbs was going to keep marty for another year as OC. The only reason why we X’d him was because GRo was going to leave for a OC gig elsewhere, and that forced Harbs hand and he had to choose one.

That’s why it didn’t surprise me that GRo is staying. Would’ve been surprising if Harbs X’d him lol

can you source this?
because all ive ever seen and read is that they thought Roman was a better fit moving forwards so they wanted him as OC (and offered Marty the opportunity to stay in a different role)

as far as im aware the only time they thought they might lose him was the year before that when they promoted him from TE coach to assistant head coach and gave him a new contract

as far as im aware theres been no indication that marty was ever going to be the OC after 2018

its been a minute, but quick google search led me to Hensley’s article and speculation:

“This reshuffling allows the Ravens to keep Roman from becoming a coordinator elsewhere, ends speculation that Harbaugh will coach elsewhere in 2019 and puts Jackson on his best path for success.”

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id...dinator-replace-marty-mornhinweg?platform=amp

it could’ve been this that I’ve read or somewhere else. But it stuck with me lol

oh wow - what weird coincidence

Being from SoCal, I used to keep tabs on all the top HS ballers in that region. I remember watching his and Amon-Ra St. Brown highlight tapes and was pumped that we drafted him. Shame how injuries took his career away.

fun fact: went to go see my cousin play Reggie Bush and Alex Smith way back when. Dear lord... lol

Dam.. tee martin gonna interview for bills oc.. makes sense

Could be a big loss for us. Then again, the Rooney rule did get extended to coordinators. So it could just be them fulfilling that necessity.

In general, I liked what Harbs had to say at his presser. Like legitimately. Things that stood out to me were the following:

We can say we had fluke injuries but that's basically besides the point. We have to do everything we can and leave no stone unturned to do what we think we can to protect our guys. That's a great answer.

He pointed out something that was obvious and something that drove me nuts all year. Typically our defenses are quite good and because of that we do well in the field position battle. This year we were awful in field position. The subsequent product of that was 2 or 3 first down drives that ended up in punts. He called those drives empty yards drives. Gotta be better about that. I think we've seen with the switch to MacDonald and the upcoming draft likely being defense heavy, we're gonna try and fix that issue.

Last thing is the acknowledgement that we need to improve the running game and reduce the number of sacks. On the running side we get our guys back which is good but the OL could be better and in the sacks side Lamar can be better but also the protection could be better.

At the end of the day, it was let's get healthy and try and stay healthy, play better defense, Lamar play smarter, and run the ball better. It's obvious our team knows where we need to improve. The question becomes what can EDC do with his cash and draft capital to help us improve in those areas.

Also the straight up acknowledgement that we've had guys running the wrong routes and the fact that's not acceptable.

When you look at the season on the whole, we were snake bitten from the start and things only got worse over time in terms of losing high impact players. Despite that though, Roman the notorious running game OC still had a potent offense for weeks when we were at our healthiest and with fucking Villanueva playing T.

I've been extremely hard on Roman, specifically saying he's not bad but he's a crutch that you know if you latch onto, your floor gets higher but your ceiling gets lower. If the season wasn't the way it was for a multitude of reasons, we'd be singing his praises.

Just imagine of our defense who was significantly healthier, especially early on didn't play like shit and actually lose 100% of end of game stands. As Harbs said, we'd have made things easier for our offense and won more games.

Imagine if we didn't have fucking Devonta Freeman as our best running back. We wouldn't have had to put so much pressure on our passing attack.

Imagine if we didn't have Huntley playing the entire end of the season.

Just take Lamars injury away and we're definitely still a playoff team. Harbs runs a team that never gives and is in every game it plays no matter who's in the game.

It's time to learn from this year, modernize and add youth to the defense and get the running game back on track. We've seen what Lamar can do passing without teams respecting the run. Imagine what Bateman will do next year when the threat of JK and Gus are back there.

It's up the EDC now.

harbs even explicitly said we were only 1 or 2 plays short from a very different season outcome
hard not to imagine that lamar cant make 1 or 2 plays in those 5 games to end the season even if he doesnt get out of the slump
