Lamar, The Running Game and The Defensive Collapse

I don't complain about much but nothing about keeping him makes sense. If Drake wasn't signed, maybe I can understand. But dude has no speed and for the "big body" back he hasn't played very big.
Especially with JK coming back next week, he's a wasted roster spot

Yeah I just can't possibly agree more. This is a single post that gets at all of the scattered points I've been trying to make. This team has an elite QB and a lot of young talent. It has just for multiple years totally ignored the pass rusher position which is frankly possibly the second most important position in football. Then in addition to ignoring pass rush, has not handled the injury situation from a roster construction point of view very well. Now I'll admit, that's probably a very difficult job given what happened last year.

But these things come together to give you a team that has an elite QB who can't hand the ball off. And an elite secondary that's pretty much useless because there's no pass rush.

i think we have to be somewhat patient too though

we discussed it all offseason that this team was constructed with the understanding that it would likely be a better team in december than it was in september barring injury-related disaster

I'm not sure going for it was the wrong call. I think going for it and continuing to think we had any push in the run game was the bigger issue. Tried the same thing over and over in those situations with the same result - failure.
That's the Greg Roman 1 yard and a cloud of dust play. Somebody needs to white it out.

Mike Davis shouldn't have even made the team. It was obvious he was terrible. Additionally he's sparsely been used through 2 games and in his short opportunities has actually only negatively impacted us. Fumbling last game and literally not being able to get one yard contributing to our loss.

if justice hill sucked in pass pro id understand keeping davis more
Definitely got the veteran benefit and that's a shame. Not that I think Badie is anything special but I find it hard to believe that Drake, Hill, and Badie plus additional flexibility doesn't provide more value. Even if not Badie, there were a shit ton of RBs on the waiver wire. Feels a lot like last year where we just kept running Murray and Bell out there.

These are the kind of heartbreak games that just don't do very well in expressing what we are effective and ineffective at, unfortunately. In golf it's a Mulligan. I'm willing to give them that as maddening as the whole DEF seemingly breaking out the cigars and waving the victory flag with 11 minutes left is. For me, THAT deflated the whole team. But I will say, the new Mark Andrews on 4th and short with an out pattern has been replaced with ineffective between the tackles runs. For me it was the DEF that just fell apart, but there has to be some ability to get a yard or a first down when it is required. None of that happened. To call the 4th quarter a shitshow is generous.

How many points did we leave on the field today? Analytics are a great tool but the problem is they are based on history. Not what is happening in front of you at any given moment.
Yes analytics doesn’t account for how inept our run game is!

I’m not sure I disagree with the aggressive approach, but for God’s sake be more creative in play calling and maybe run a play they may not be expecting. Not sure what the call was on the Lamar fumble but it was pretty obvious we weren’t getting the push on the dive plays. The Andrews sneak and Ricard dive were at least something different, and they worked!

In Calais' presser he says the collapse was more mental than anything. I wonder if he meant like talking the foot off the gas mental or we actually played defense poorly because we were confused about things. Probably both
