I’d argue that’s how the plays are designed. There’s not really an effort to go deep until we absolutely need to. But teams are just sitting on that short shit because they know that’s all we’ve got. Also doesn’t help that Huntley is a true one read QB. If that read isn’t there, he’s running or trying to make a throw on the run which has been disastrous.
it's those 2 things combined
it's the fact that he's not a threat deep which condenses the offence and makes it easier to defend, but similarly is a 1-read and bail QB which reduces the time for receivers to work their way open
really reduces the types of routes and combinations you can put out there and expect to succeed
and when people say Huntley's good because he allows us to run the same offence, i just laugh now, because the offence is not built around what Ty can do, it's built almost the opposite way - Lamar's consistently given 2 plays in the huddle and trusted to put us in the right play, expected to make full-field reads and consistently read high-to-low with quick processing, making line calls etc. and he does all of that and since Bateman's injury we've not been successful deep, but this offence is still designed (with Lamar) to be a complementary offence built around big plays in the passing game supported by a consistent and physical running game
lamar can be held partially culpable for the lack of big plays in the passing game - he had a few games of poor form where he was missing too many deep balls - but even that threat of those missed deep balls opened up the underneath passing game...
lamar could probably throw a ball backwards while falling over with more velocity than huntley can when in rhythm
