The 2023 Offseason Thread

You like him more than Bieniemy?
The Chiefs are more likely to allow one of their coaches leave for a promotion rather than a lateral move - it'd great to hire an experienced play caller though.
I think having a coach with qb and wr background is beneficial and he's been a pass game analyst too. Reid has his analysts constantly looking for new play designs in the college and pro game - so he knows how to be creative and enrich a playbook.

Eric is only leaving for a HC gig. No way he leaves KC for anything less.

I don't think teams are that desperate, or that things are now completely different after just two years. Especially in a draft where there isn't really any top tier, must get WR. Honestly if the Ravens were picking in the top half I wouldn't touch this group of WRs.

But I do agree that we can't be depending on taking a good WR in the first. We should get at least a couple vets in FA.
I don't know, there were 5 WR's picked in the top 16 picks. The only team to trade a WR to try to recoup that trade in the 1st is the Titans at pick 18. After the Titans, there were no more WR's until GB at the beginning of the second round and 7 total WR's in the 2nd. By the end of the 2nd, all the teams that had traded a WR, other than the Ravens!!!, had picked a WR. Maybe it's not that there's a run or that the position is being picked at a greater frequency, but it sure seems like it's turning that way.

What's also interesting is that we picked a punter in the 4th round, the first one off the board, and there had been only one WR picked in that round before us. I think there's a fear of WR's or that they just value just about every other position as more valuable. The Bengals did not pick a WR, but both the Steelers (2nd and 4th) and the Browns (3rd and 6th) picked 2.

This is getting in the weeds a little. I don't think teams are desperate, per se, but I do think the cost in FA of top tier WR's is going to push teams to draft WR's sooner.

Well i didn't expect thesee two guys to be on our short list.
Anyone familiar with the Seahawk qb coach?
Dave Canales has been apart of Pete Carroll coaching staff since day one with The Seahawks. He was petty instrumental when it came to Doug Baldwin, Paul Richardson, and Jermaine Kearse development as the wide receiver coach from 2010 to 2017. In 2018 to 2019 he was Russell Wilson QB coach which weren't bad years at all for Wilson then in 2020 to 2021 he was elevated to passing game coordinator and in one of those years rather 20 or 21 I believe The Seahawks had the number one ranked passing offense. Now in 2022 he was moved back to quarterback coach where Geno Smith had the best year of his career and has been selected to the pro bowl.

He's got a pretty good resume and not sure why he hasn't been interviewed more for OC opportunities though.

I'm in on the Brian Johnson bandwagon for our next OC, but Canales feels like a good hire. He's coming from a run heavy team that usually gets the most out of their WRs, and has used a mobile QB for quite awhile.

I'm really feeling Todd Monken as The Ravens potential OC a lot after looking up how he ran his offense at The NFL and College level.

Speaking of playoff teams who NEED WRs, we will most definitely be competing with the Giants to get some weapons for their franchise QB.

Chad O'Shea wasn't well thought of as Miami's OC. Interviewing him makes me worry that another bad Harbaugh OC hire is coming.

That said, he's not Roman.

Judging him from his one year in Miami when they went all in on tanking then was fired a year later by Flores probably isn't a sign of whether he would be another bad hire. Just reading his bio on the Browns website....

- Joined the Browns in 2020 and helped the offense to some of its best numbers in generations. Cleveland's 408 points were its second-most in franchise history, while the club also finished with its second-best total in scrimmage touchdowns (48) and tied for the second-most first downs (355).

- Spent 2019 as the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins. After starting the year 0-7, the Dolphins went 5-4 in their final nine games. Helped WR DeVante Parker finish among the NFL leaders in receiving yards (fifth in NFL with 1,202) and touchdowns (fourth in NFL with nine).

- Spent 10 years (2009-18) in New England as the team's wide receivers coach. Helped WRs Wes Welker (three times), Julian Edelman (three times), Randy Moss and Brandin Cooks all surpass the 1,000 receiving yard mark. Edelman won Super Bowl LIII MVP honors after recording 10 receptions for 141 yards in a 13-3 victory. Welker led the league in receptions in 2009 and 2011 and set franchise records for receptions (123 in 2009) and receiving yards (1,569 in 2011). In 2009, Moss tied for the NFL lead with 13 touchdowns, while Welker led the NFL in receptions (123) and the duo finished second (Welker 1,348) and tied for fifth (Moss 1,264) in the league in receiving yards.

- Prior to New England, spent three seasons as offensive assistant/wide receivers coach (2006-08) with Minnesota. In 2008, he helped Bernard Berrian rank second in the NFL with an average of 20.8 yards per catch, and the Vikings led the NFL with 13 touchdown receptions of 20-plus yards.
